Book excerpt: A young witch must pass a coming-of-age quest or risk losing her magic forever in this enchanting fantasy -- perfect for fans of Kiki's Delivery Service and Aru Shah and the End of Time. Sometimes all you need is a pinch of magic... Eva Evergreen is determined to earn the rank of Novice Witch before her thirteenth birthday. If she doesn't, she'll lose her magic forever. For most young witches and wizards, it's a simple enough test: One: Help your town, do good all around. Two: Live there for one moon, don't leave too soon. Three: Fly home by broomstick, the easiest of tricks. The only problem? Eva only has a pinch of magic. She summons heads of cabbage instead of flowers and gets a sunburn instead of calling down rain. And to add insult to injury, whenever she overuses her magic, she falls asleep. When she lands in the tranquil coastal town of Auteri, the residents expect a powerful witch, not a semi-magical girl. So Eva comes up with a plan: set up a magical repair shop to aid Auteri and prove she's worthy. She may have more blood than magic, but her "semi-magical fixes" repair the lives of the townspeople in ways they never could have imagined. Only, Eva's bit of magic may not be enough when the biggest magical storm in history threatens the town she's grown to love. Eva must conjure up all of the magic, bravery, and cleverness she can muster or Auteri and her dreams of becoming a witch will wash away with the storm.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A low-budget breakout film that wowed critics and audiences on its initial release, Stranger Than Paradise would prove to be a seminal film in the new American independent cinema movement and establish its director, Jim Jarmusch, as a hip, cult auteur. Taking inspiration from 1960s underground filmmaking, international art cinema, genre cinema, and punk culture, Jarmusch’s film provides a bridge between midnight movie features and a new mode of quirky, offbeat independent filmmaking. This book probes the film's production history, initial reception, aesthetics, and legacy in order to understand its place within the cult film canon. In examining the film's cult pedigree, it explores a number of threads that fed into the film—including New York downtown culture of the early 1980s and Jarmusch’s involvement in music—as well as reflecting on how the film's status has developed alongside Jarmusch’s subsequent output and reputation.

Book excerpt: Based on a true story, More Heaven is about six children with special needs and the remarkable teacher who gives them a chance at learning and life. Despite challenges and a lack of support, Miss Tina Randolph’s commitment to reach, teach, and inspire these children is unwavering. By accepting their uniqueness and participating in their private fantasy world, while at the same time engaging them in the real world, she eventually succeeds. Tina, her quick-witted teacher’s aide Kaye, and the children mount a tireless, daily battle to shift the tide toward the acceptance of people who are different. The experiment, begun in chaotic, uncharted waters, bridges the gap of understanding and paves the way for the inclusionary practices of education and society’s acceptance of children and adults with special needs. This is a road that continues to need paving, making the messages in More Heaven equally relevant today. The book evolved from an experiment in the Philadelphia school system in the late 1970s in response to the 1975 Education for the Handicapped Act, ruling that public schools in the US educate all children with disabilities, despite their severity. Previously, many of these special needs children were kept at home—isolated and denied access to the mainstream. More Heaven is a powerful story of compassion, determination, disappointment, triumph, and love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As she sits daydreaming in her seventh-grade classroom one September afternoon in 1937, Eva Jordan finds a curious note from her friend Ned. He hints that a Hollywood crew is about to descend upon their small northern California town to make a movie about Robin Hood, the legendary medieval archer who robbed the rich to help the poor. Eva, who has not yet been allowed by her parents to attend a movie, suspects Ned is joking or has his facts wrong. But within a short few weeks, she is watching the filming of The Adventures of Robin Hood. She realizes that Ned, who has suddenly and confusingly become more than a friend, is changing, is growing up, as she is, even though he still sometimes acts like a "dumb boy." The two pal around Chico together more and more as the autumn days unfold, and together they try out as "extras" in the movie-and to their surprise, are chosen. Meanwhile, their much-admired teacher has started talking at length about a civil war raging in Spain. He explains that the socialist forces, who are mostly poor, are currently fighting the fascist forces, who are mostly rich, and who have illegally seized power. Eva sees parallels to the Robin Hood story, and then suddenly, their teacher is gone, accused by the school board of being a communist. Bewildered and worried, Eva learns that Errol Flynn, who plays Robin Hood in the movie, recently traveled to Spain to see the war firsthand, and returned with a call for peace. Along with their school friends, Eva and Ned devise what they know is a crazy plot to surprise Flynn on the movie set, introduce themselves, and beg for his help in their teacher's cause by appealing to his "Robin Hood" side. Things don't go exactly the way they planned, but in the end, chaos returns to order, and Eva and Ned sit happily with their classmates watching the movie they not only saw being filmed, but actually appear in.
