Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Le défi de la fraternité written by Marie-Jo Thiel and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2018 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Lived Religion in the Ancient Mediterranean World by : Valentino Gasparini
Download or read book Lived Religion in the Ancient Mediterranean World written by Valentino Gasparini and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-04-06 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lived Ancient Religion project has radically changed perspectives on ancient religions and their supposedly personal or public character. This volume applies and further develops these methodological tools, new perspectives and new questions. The religious transformations of the Roman Imperial period appear in new light and more nuances by comparative confrontation and the integration of many disciplines. The contributions are written by specialists from a variety of disciplinary contexts (Jewish Studies, Theology, Classics, Early Christian Studies) dealing with the history of religion of the Mediterranean, West-Asian, and European area from the (late) Hellenistic period to the (early) Middle Ages and shaped by their intensive exchange. From the point of view of their respective fields of research, the contributors engage with discourses on agency, embodiment, appropriation and experience. They present innovative research in four fields also of theoretical debate, which are “Experiencing the Religious”, “Switching the Code”, „A Thing Called Body“ and “Commemorating the Moment”.

Part Four looks at such diverse pilgrims' rites as oracles, chant, and stational liturgy, while Part Five brings in Athanasius's and an anonymous hagiographer's perspectives on pilgrimage in Egypt. The volume includes illustrations of the Abu Mina site, pilgrims' ampules from the Thecla shrine, as well as several maps.
Book Synopsis Die Welt der Götterbilder by : Brigitte Groneberg
Download or read book Die Welt der Götterbilder written by Brigitte Groneberg and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2007 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Transatlantic Parallaxes by : Anne Raulin
Download or read book Transatlantic Parallaxes written by Anne Raulin and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthropological inquiry developed around the study of the exotic. Now that we live in a world that seems increasingly familiar, putatively marked by a spreading sameness, anthropology must re-envision itself. The emergence of diverse national traditions in the discipline offers one intriguing path. This volume, the product of a novel encounter of American anthropologists of France and French anthropologists of the United States, explores the possibilities of that path through an experiment in the reciprocal production of knowledge. Simultaneously native subjects, foreign experts, and colleagues, these scholars offer novel insights into each other’s societies, juxtaposing glimpses of ourselves and a familiar “others” to productively unsettle and enrich our understanding of both.

Book Synopsis Statues in Roman Society by : Peter Stewart
Download or read book Statues in Roman Society written by Peter Stewart and published by Oxford Studies in Ancient Cult. This book was released on 2003 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statues are among the most familiar remnants of classical art. Yet their prominence in ancient society is often ignored. In the Roman world statues were ubiquitous. Whether they were displayed as public honours or memorials, collected as works of art, dedicated to deities, venerated as gods,or violated as symbols of a defeated political regime, they were recognized individually and collectively as objects of enormous significance.By analysing ancient texts and images, Statues in Roman Society unravels the web of associations which surrounded Roman statues. Addressing all categories of statuary together for the first time, it illuminates them in ancient terms, explaining expectations of what statues were or ought to be anddescribing the Romans' uneasy relationship with 'the other population' in their midst.
