Book excerpt: The opto-kinetic cervico reflex (OKCR) is a recently hypothesized visually driven reflex that serves to stabilize the image of the external horizon on the retina during high performance aircraft roll maneuvers. Although anecdotally reported as occurring, head tilt during helicopter flight has not been formally studied. Such research is required to determine the full impact and significance it may have on a rotary wing aviator's flying performance. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between horizon position and perception of orientation, and thus generate vital information to assess whether this reflex plays an important role in spatial disorientation. Twenty volunteer pilots participated in a UH-60 flight simulator study to examine the effects of this reflex. The results confirm that the OKCR occurs during simulated helicopter flight, both with and without night vision goggles. As with previous studies, head roll increased during flight under visual meteorological conditions in relation to increasing aircraft roll angle up to a maximum sustainable level and then remained constant. Head roll did not occur during flight under instrument meteorological conditions. Various aspects that impact rotary-wing operations are discussed, and recommendations made for future research.

In this second edition, the author complements this with a new Chapter on Degraded Flying Qualities, drawing examples from flight in poor visibility, failure of control functions and encounters with severe atmospheric disturbances. Fully embracing the consequences of Degraded Flying Qualities during the design phase will contribute positively to safety. The accurate prediction and assessment of Flying Qualities draws on the modelling and simulation discipline on the one hand and testing methodologies on the other. Checking predictions in flight requires clearly defined ‘mission-task-elements’, derived from missions with realistic performance requirements. The Author Gareth Padfield, a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, is the Bibby Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Liverpool. He is an aeronautical engineer by training and has spent his career to date researching the theory and practice of flight for both fixed-wing aeroplanes and rotorcraft. During his years with the UK’s Royal Aircraft Establishment and Defence Evaluation and Research Agency, he conducted research into rotorcraft dynamics, handling qualities and flight control. His work has involved a mix of flight testing, creating and testing simulation models and developing analytic approximations to describe flight behaviour and handling qualities. The display consisted of the map instrument, a vertical-situation indicator, and vertical-scale instruments for the indication of airspeed, vertical speed, and height. The tests were conducted under simulated IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) conditions along a 6 glide slope at approach speeds of 30 knots. Winds near the ground were about 8 knots. Tests of four maps with scales ranging from 100 to 1000 ft/in. (12 to 120 m/cm) showed that the pilots were able to adapt and to perform effectively with any of the scales tested. For the final part of the approach, however, their tracking performance was better with maps having large scales (on the order of 100 ft/in., or 12 m/cm). With two of the larger-scale maps, approaches were flown to a 50-foot (15.24 m) breakout and visual slowdown to hover. The device was a commercially available captive helicopter attached to a ground effects machine. Two experimental groups of trainees received 3 1/4 or 7 1/4 hours of device training prior to primary helicopter training. In comparison with control groups, both device trained groups (a) were significantly less likely to be eliminated from subsequent flight training for reasons of flying deficiency; (b) required less flight training to attain the proficiency required to solo the helicopter; and (c) received higher grades during early training. Trainees who performed well on the training device tended to perform well during subsequent flight training. Instructors using devices such as this one need not be proficient in the helicopter used for subsequent flight training. (Author).

Confirmation of system stability parameters and envelope is desired, but flight test evaluation is time consuming and costly. A simulation model validated for handling quality assessments would significantly reduce resources expended in flight testing while increasing efficiency, productivity, and safety by aiding researchers, designers, and pilots to understand factors affecting helicopter-slung load handling qualities. This thesis describes a comprehensive dynamics and aerodynamics model for slung load simulation, obtained by integrating the NASA Ames Gen Hel UH-60A simulation with slung load equations of motion. Frequency domain analysis is used to compare simulation to flight test frequency responses and key system stability parameters. Results are given for no load, a 4K lb Block, and a 4K lb CONEX load. Handling quality parameters, stability margins, and load pendulum motion roots for cases without load aerodynamics and with static wind tunnel data were compared. Results illustrated state-of-the-art simulation modeling of helicopter/slung load dynamics and its accuracy in predicting key dynamic parameters of interest.
