Book excerpt: Various schemes which have been advanced for expressing the significance of a given set of environmental conditions as a single number, or as a semi-quantitative simple phrase, are reviewed. An index of relative strain is developed, similar to that used by Belding and Hatch in their heat stress index, but based on Burton's wet clothes formula for the calculation of actual and relative cooling demands. A chart is developed in which relative strain lines are drawn on a psychrometric chart for standard conditions of activity, clothing, air movement, and radiant heat transfer most likely to be found in shelters. A table is provided for adjusting the reading on the chart for certain non-standard conditions of activity and air movement. The significance of each zone for a standard ''average'' person is expressed in graphic form for such considerations as comfort, discomfort, distress, failure, performance, and tolerance. Further charts indicate the significance of each zone for non- standard states.

Book excerpt: Observations were made of the thermal environment in the basement portion of a box shaped reinforced concrete 200 person shelter when the shelter was supplied with a minimum quantity of ventilation air. Also, an evaluation was made of the distribution of the ventilation air in the shelter as measured by variations in effective temperature, when the air was supplied through a duct system and through a single point source. Ventilation air conditioned to simulate a 1% design day in the Washington, D.C. area (i.e. air at dry bulb and wet bulb temperatures which will not be exceeded more than 1% of the time), was supplied to the shelter area tested. Approximately 100 simulated occupants were placed in the shelter basement to generate the same amount of heat and moisture as 100 human occupants. When conditioned air was supplied at a minimum rate of 3 cfm per person, effective temperatures as high as 90 deg were attained and maintained within the shelter. Based on current standards for the thermal environment in shelters, it is concluded that a minimum ventilation rate of 3 cfm is not adequate for cooling this shelter space.

Book excerpt: The shelters are like a housing structures used for the army for sheltering in terrain places. These shelters are mounted over the army vehicles which are subjected to static, dynamic and thermal loads due to vehicle transportation in all kinds of terrains. The shelters are subjected to a different thermal loads due to seasonal externally temperatures and inside there are heat dissipating elements. The objective is to maintain the temperature inside the shelter at around 27 degree centigrade for which the CFD analysis is performed. This study uses the Fluent software to evaluate the indoor thermal environment of Shelter and the analysis is to perform Thermal and air flow studies for prediction of the temperatures when the components are dissipating heat inside the shelter. Shelter contains four Panels and one air pre heater which dissipate heat. The shelter subjected to an extreme operating temperature -30 to +55 centigrade and there is need of AC's for temperature control. In this study the location and number of AC's required and on off conditions are studied using Fluent solver for the temperature predictions. The steady state and transient analysis is performed using Fluent.

Book excerpt: Our responses to our thermal environment have a considerable effect on our performance and behavior, not least in the realm of work. There has been considerable scientific investigation of these responses and formal methods have been developed for environmental evaluation and design. In recent years these have been developed to the extent that detailed national and international standards of practice have now become feasible. This new edition of Ken Parson's definitive text brings us back up to date. He covers hot, moderate and cold environments, and defines these in terms of six basic parameters: air temperature, radiate temperature, humidity, air velocity, clothing worn, and the person's activity. There is a focus on the principles and practice of human response, which incorporates psychology, physiology and environmental physics with applied ergonomics. Water requirements, computer modeling and computer-aided design are brought in, as are current standards. Special populations, such as the aged or disabled and specialist environments such as those found in vehicles are also considered. This book continues to be the standard text for the design of environments for humans to live and work safely, comfortably and effectively, and for the design of materials which help the same people cope with their environments.

This report provides background information and methods for characterizing the properties of enclosed spaces (vehicles, shelters, other enclosures) that impact the thermal state of Warfighters. Quantification of the thermal environment of an enclosure consists of measuring air and surface temperatures, humidity, air flow; and radiant load. Methods focus on obtaining enough data to define each microclimate within the target space. Three studies of concrete tanks and metal containers, the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle; and the Bradley Fighting Vehicle, are described.

Book excerpt: Digital computer programs for the calculation of underground shelter heat transfer are described with respect to their mathematical models, assumption, limitations, parameters, input data and computational techniques. The report also presents comparisons between the calculated shelter thermal environments with the observed for seven different prototype shelters. It has been found that the simple one-dimensional heat conduction model can accurately simulate the thermal environment in large shelters, although complex three dimensional heat conduction models may be needed for a small and shallow underground conduction.

Book excerpt: Thermal problems treated analytically in this report relate to transfer of metabolic heat form human bodies to a shelter environment and to some effects of population density on optimum clothing, skin wetness, limits for thermal equilibrium, and contributions made by each of six processes for heat/mass transfer. Also, an analysis of moist-air mixing processes is used to evaluate operational requirements for partial recirculation of ventilating air during cold weather. Quantitative results are presented in 9 figures and 18 tables.
