Book Synopsis The Social Security (Flexible New Deal) Regulations 2009 (SI 2009 No. 480) by : Great Britain. Social Security Advisory Committee
Download or read book The Social Security (Flexible New Deal) Regulations 2009 (SI 2009 No. 480) written by Great Britain. Social Security Advisory Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2009 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Government referred proposals concerning the draft Social Security (Flexible New Deal) Regulations 2009 to the Social Security Advisory Committee (SSAC) on 1 October 2008. These regulations will implement the Government's proposals to introduce an enhanced regime for those claiming Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA). This will include implementing the Flexible New Deal (FND) as a new employment programme for those who claim the benefit for a year, or after six months for those assessed as having greatest need of help to find work. The Committee's report gives broad support to elements of the revised Jobseekers Regime and the Flexible New Deal, but also expresses a number of concerns about the proposals, and makes eight recommendations. These fall under four broad headings: the extension of conditionality; the speed of the rollout of the full programme; the contracting out of services; and the changed economic situation. The Government sets out its response to the Committee's concerns, and has decided to proceed with the proposals as laid out in the Regulations originally referred to the Committee on 1 October 2008.
Book Synopsis The Future of Local Economic Development by : Ines Newman
Download or read book The Future of Local Economic Development written by Ines Newman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the future role of local economic development. Once New Labour came to power in 1997, they sought a third way between the new right agenda of Thatcherism with its attempts to reduce the role of the local state and foster a free market and the left’s attempts to take more control over the local economy in the interest of workers. In July 2007, Gordon Brown’s government published the 'Review of Sub-national Economic Development and Regeneration'. This book argues that competitiveness and neo-liberalism, or increased market domination over an ever wider range of social relations, have in reality dominated New Labour’s policies. Yet a number of contradictions remain as New Labour continues to seek a reduction in poverty and regional and local disparities. The book analyses the changes that will result from further market domination under the Sub-national Review but also the opportunities that will arise for local economic development agents, particularly those with a concern for social justice. It looks specifically at regional and sub-regional strategy making; partnership, networking and building institutional capacity; local labour market policy and policy towards cities. An additional feature of the book is that several authors draw on international comparisons. This book was published as a special issue of Local Economy.

Book Synopsis Understanding social security (Second edition) by : Millar, Jane
Download or read book Understanding social security (Second edition) written by Millar, Jane and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2009-02-02 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an increasingly risky world the need for social security support is greater than ever. Benefits and tax credits aim to provide protection against economic risks, help families with the costs of bringing up children, enable people to save for retirement, and provide support in old age. Key goals are to redistribute income to alleviate poverty and help people maintain living standards across the lifecourse. Reform of the social security and tax systems has been at the heart of the UK Labour government's aspirations to modernise the welfare state since 1997 with major changes in both policy and administration. This second edition of the important text, Understanding Social Security, reviews these policy developments, giving readers the information and analytical tools to make sense of policy debates and reforms and to evaluate options for the future. The chapters have been extensively updated since the first edition, with new chapters on social security reform, inequalities and social security, and the new 'welfare market'. The main topics covered include: · the social security safety net · racism, ethnicity, migration · social security governance · global social security · social security and the life course · the challenge of childhood poverty · reforming pensions · welfare to work · sickness, incapacity and disability · tax credits · service delivery information technology The book provides a critical examination of social security policy and practice and is essential reading for students of social policy, social work and sociology, as well as policy-makers and practitioners in the fields of social security, welfare-to-work, employment, anti-poverty strategies and welfare rights. It will be of interest to those interested in recent policy developments in these areas, emerging issues and debates, and in wider issues of the modernisation of the welfare state.

Book Synopsis Delivering on Child Poverty by : Lisa Harker
Download or read book Delivering on Child Poverty written by Lisa Harker and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2006-11 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UK has comparatively high levels of child poverty: around one in five children are living in relative poverty (defined as living in a household with below 60 per cent median income before housing costs). The Government has made significant progress on reducing child poverty, with 700,000 less children in poverty than in 1988/89 (when the figure was 3.4 million), but missed its interim target of reducing child poverty by a quarter by 2004/05. It is unlikely, with current policies, to meet its 2010 target of halving child poverty, nor the 2020 target of eliminating it. This report recommends reforms to the Welfare to Work and New Deal for Lone Parents programmes. They should be more attuned to the particular needs of parents, who need guidance, support and skills to progress in work. They should not just encourage parents to take any job rather than one that offers them good long-term prospects, or leads to parents "cycling" between having a job and being out of work. Moreover, many children in poverty live in families that have no contact with Welfare to Work programmes. Jobcentre Plus, the agency that is charged with reducing joblessness, needs to focus more on the family, providing more flexible packages of support and seeking a wider customer reach. If necessary other agencies might have to be involved in delivering the recommendations. The author makes a number of recommendations for immediate implementation; others are for action after evaluation; and several new pilot schemes are also suggested.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that active labour market policies are necessary to improve the position of the unemployed but have so far performed relatively poorly. The contributing authors seek ways to improve active labour market policy and consider three means of doing so: improving the quality by better targeting and by better-designed measures, more efficient implementation and delivery, and better performance by benchmarking the various implementation agencies involved.
