This book was released on 2015-10-26 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written for students and professionals, this revised textbook surveys the mineral industry from geological, environmental and economic perspectives. Thoroughly updated, the text includes a new chapter on technology industry metals as well as separate chapters on mineral economics and environmental geochemistry. Carefully designed figures simplify difficult concepts and show the location of important deposits and trade patterns, emphasising the true global nature of mineral resources. Featuring boxes highlighting special interest topics, the text equips students with the skills they need to contribute to the energy and mineral questions currently facing society, including issues regarding oil pipelines, nuclear power plants, water availability and new mining locations. Technical terms are highlighted when first used, and references are included to allow students to delve more deeply into areas of interest. Multiple choice and short answer questions are provided for instructors online at www.cambridge.org/kesler to complete the teaching package.

Book Synopsis Materials Flow and Energy Required for the Production of Selected Mineral Commodities by : Christoph Kippenberger
Download or read book Materials Flow and Energy Required for the Production of Selected Mineral Commodities written by Christoph Kippenberger and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental impact assessments of industrial processes are based on the amount of raw materials, residues and energy in the production of commodities. A materials flow analysis of these amounts and an environmental impact analysis are usually the first steps in a product life cycle assessment. In the extraction of mineral resources, these various amounts say a great deal about the environmental impact of a process: for example, for the production of one tonne of aluminium about 5 t of ore and 3 t of rock are mined and transported, and about 16,000 kWh/t electrical energy are used. These analyses reveal the situation for the production of a specific mineral commodity but they also provide an indication of where it is possible to improve the process efficiency. Given (a) the importance of mineral commodities in supplying the needs of humankind, (b) the importance of mineral extraction for industrial processes, (c) the need to protect our environment, and (d) the fact that these resources are all limited to one extent or the other, there is also an enormous need to establish a reliable and objective database as the basis for further analyses.
Book Synopsis Criteria and Indicators for Sustainable Forest Management by : Robert John Raison
Download or read book Criteria and Indicators for Sustainable Forest Management written by Robert John Raison and published by CABI. This book was released on 2001 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is increasing pressure on the forestry industry to adopt sustainable practices, but a lack of knowledge about how to facilitate this, and how to measure sustainability. This book reviews current thinking about scientifically based indicators, and sustainable management of natural forests and plantations. Information is applicable to boreal, temperate and tropical biomes. The contents have been developed from papers presented at a IUFRO conference held in Australia, in order to develop a state-of the art report on this subject.
