Book Synopsis Geoindicators for Monitoring Canada's National Parks by : David M. Welch
Download or read book Geoindicators for Monitoring Canada's National Parks written by David M. Welch and published by [Halifax, N.S.] : Parks Canada. This book was released on 2002 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parks Canada has adopted an ecological integrity monitoring framework to guide its biennial assessment of the parks system. This paper focusses on the search for indicators of geological, geomorphological, and soil features, processes, & stresses for that framework. The paper describes indicators developed by the International Union of Geological Sciences, the Canadian Environmental Monitoring & Assessment Network, and the author that have been combined into one list, and assesses each indicator for three criteria: management relevance, linkage with other indicators, and practicality for monitoring. A short list of selected indicators is proposed for further consideration for national park system monitoring. The author also selects indicators that seem best matched to the local environment in five national parks in order to show the variation in indicators among local situations.

Download or read book Geo Year Book written by and published by UNEP/Earthprint. This book was released on 2005 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second in the series of annual reports linked to the UNEP Global Environment Outlook (GEO) which seeks to bridge the gap between science and policy by reviewing major global and regional environmental issues and policy developments during the year 2004. It also considers emerging issues from scientific research, focusing on the role of good environmental management in minimising the emergence of infectious diseases, and the impact of changes in ocean salinity. It then goes on to present the most recent available data on changes in the global environment, including new indicators on air quality, marine protected areas and ozone protection. The report also includes a feature focusing on the cross-cutting issues of gender, poverty and the environment; as well giving an overview of the Indian Ocean tsunami and its initial impact.

Book Synopsis A Thermodynamic Approach to Water Geothermometry by : Roberto Cioni
Download or read book A Thermodynamic Approach to Water Geothermometry written by Roberto Cioni and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-11 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores water geothermometry, a highly relevant topic in the exploration and exploitation of geothermal energy. Presenting theoretical geothermometers and indicators of CO2 fugacity, it describes a rigorous new approach entirely based on thermodynamics. The book will appeal to geothermal geoscientists, especially those working in research institutions and companies around the globe. It is also of interest to students on advanced courses in applied geochemistry, water–rock interaction and other related areas.
Book Synopsis The Solfatara Magmatic-Hydrothermal System by : Luigi Marini
Download or read book The Solfatara Magmatic-Hydrothermal System written by Luigi Marini and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-05 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book includes innovative gas-geothermometers and geobarometers, which are urgently needed to estimate the increasingly higher temperatures and pressures present at depth below the Solfatara volcano, owing to its on-going unrest. Therefore, in this book, new gas geoindicators, applicable up to ca. 1000°C and 3 kbar, have been implemented and applied to Solfatara fluids. The innovations of this book include: methane, having a sluggish behavior, was treated separately from fast-reacting carbon monoxide; deviations from the ideal gas behavior were considered; the effects of reaction kinetics were taken into account. This was possible because a dataset including many geochemical parameters and extending from 1983 to 2020 with a good sampling frequency is available for Solfatara, making it a case history probably unique worldwide. Nevertheless, the gas geoindicators described in this book can be applied to other similar systems. Thus, this book is of interest to many scientists studying gas geochemistry, geothermometry, and geobarometry for volcanic surveillance and the mitigation of the volcanic risk.

Book excerpt: A counterpoint to biodiversity, geodiversity describes the rocks, sediments, soils, fossils, landforms, and the physical processes that underlie our environment. The first book to focus exclusively on the subject, Geodiversity describes the interrelationships between geodiversity and biodiversity, the value of geodiversity to society, as well as current threats to its existence. Illustrated with global case studies throughout, the book examines traditional approaches to protecting biodiversity and the new management agenda which is starting to be used instead.
