This book was released on 1985 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The naturalized populations of brook charr, Salvelinus fontinalis in Cowan Creek and South Duck Rlver, Manltoba showed markedly different densities. The streams are geologically similar, but the hydrological regime of Cowan Creek has been modified by beaver activity within the study area. The diets of the two populations were similar and the streams provided abundant invertebrate food resources. Cowan Creek fish, at lower density, grew faster and had a greater mean size than South Duck River fish. The differences in the two populations appeared to correlate with differences in winter conditions and beaver activity on the streams. The development of solidly frozen reaches of Cowan Creek with subsequent overflowing of its waters, sometimes out of the stream channel, could have had significant effects on the suitability of much of the stream for over-winter survival, limiting brook charr mainly to beaver ponds during winter. This ice condition was not common on most of South Duck River. Consequent effects on spawning and incubation success could explain the differences in density between the streams, as well as growth and size differences. Although both populations are marginally successful, successive cold dry winters could result in extirpation of either or both of them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The premiere reference book on the 108 species of frogs inhabiting North America north of Mexico. An unparalleled synthesis of the biology and behavior of all native and nonindigenous species, this two-volume, extensively referenced resource has been called the most important book ever published on North American anura. Color photographs and range maps accompany species accounts detailing information on etymology, nomenclature, identification, distribution, fossil record, systematics and geographic variation, life history and ecology, behavior, population and community biology, and conservation. This new edition of the text contains the following updates: Literature citations have been added from 2012 to 2021, now spanning from 1709 to 2021. Distribution maps have been updated, recording the decreased ranges due to declining amphibian populations. Photographs have been revised to ensure the highest digital quality. Anaxyrus williamsi and Lithobates kauffeldi, newly described species, have been included. An account is also included for Gastrophryne mazatlanensis, now recognized as occurring within the United States. Generic keys have been added. A brief section on N.A. frogs in history and art have been added. Nomenclature has been updated (Incilius for Ollotis). Now the only up-to-date and comprehensive resource for those trying to protect amphibians in the US and Canada, as well as for researchers and wildlife managers who study biodiversity"--

Download or read book Rays of the World written by Peter Last and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2016-12 with total page 801 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rays are among the largest fishes and evolved from shark-like ancestors nearly 200 million years ago. They share with sharks many life history traits: all species are carnivores or scavengers; all reproduce by internal fertilisation; and all have similar morphological and anatomical characteristics, such as skeletons built of cartilage. Rays of the World is the first complete pictorial atlas of the world’s ray fauna and includes information on many species only recently discovered by scientists while undertaking research for the book. It includes all 26 families and 633 valid named species of rays, but additional undescribed species exist for many groups. Rays of the World features a unique collection of paintings of all living species by Australian natural history artist Lindsay Marshall, compiled as part of a multinational research initiative, the Chondrichthyan Tree of Life Project. Images sourced from around the planet were used by the artist to illustrate the fauna. This comprehensive overview of the world’s ray fauna summarises information such as general identifying features and distributional information about these iconic, but surprisingly poorly known, fishes. It will enable readers to gain a better understanding of the rich diversity of rays and promote wider public interest in the group. Rays of the World is an ideal reference for a wide range of readers, including conservationists, fishery managers, scientists, fishers, divers, students and book collectors.

Book excerpt: Research has revealsed that there are more than 80,000 species of nematodes, which could infect over 40,000 species of vertebrates. Yet most helminthological research is limited to taxonomic studies based on opportunistic sampling in localized geographic areas around the world. This volume encompasses a holistic approach as it touches many ecological niches and interactions between helminths and their mammalian hosts.
