Book excerpt: Cold mix recycled asphalt (CMRA) concrete was evaluated to be an innovative repair material to improve the pavement quality and environmental impact on pipeline maintenance in this study. The study presented and specifically examined the use of CMRA with 2.5 % foam asphalt content as a replacement for the currently used controlled low-strength material (CLSM) as pipeline backfill material. CMRA's material properties, performance, carbon dioxide emissions, cost, and construction time were analyzed in this study to confirm the advantages and limitations of CMRA. The results concluded that CMRA performed better than CLSM for all the items analyzed. Specifically, according to the performance analysis, CMRA exhibited a better Marshall stability index, California bearing ratio, indirect tensile strength, tensile strength ratio, anti-rutting ability, and penetration than the standards specified. Furthermore, the average carbon emissions of CMRA were 36 % less than CLSM, could save at least 2h of construction time per cubic meter of construction, and immediately opened traffic. However, CRMA's construction cost in this study was similar to CLSM and was only lower (up to 2.3 %) by considering a similar price of cement, asphalt, and additives. Based on the aforementioned results, this study concluded that the findings may be of particular interest for Taiwanese pipeline maintenance projects as a backfill material and is worthy of further research.

Book excerpt: Cold in-place recycling (CIR) has become an attractive method for rehabilitating asphalt roads that have good subgrade support and are suffering distress related to non-structural aging and cracking of the pavement layer. Although CIR is widely used, its use could be expanded if its performance were more predictable. Transportation officials have observed roads that were recycled under similar circumstances perform very differently for no clear reason. Moreover, a rational mix design has not yet been developed, design assumptions regarding the structural support of the CIR layer remain empirical and conservative, and there is no clear understanding of the cause-effect relationships between the choices made during the design/construction process and the resulting performance. The objective of this project is to investigate these relationships, especially concerning the age of the recycled pavement, cumulative traffic volume, support conditions, aged engineering properties of the CIR materials, and road performance. Twenty-four CIR asphalt roads constructed in Iowa from 1986 to 2004 were studied: 18 were selected from a sample of roads studied in a previous research project (HR-392), and 6 were selected from newer CIR projects constructed after 1999. This report describes the results of comprehensive field and laboratory testing for these CIR asphalt roads. The results indicate that the modulus of the CIR layer and the air voids of the CIR asphalt binder were the most important factors affecting CIR pavement performance for high-traffic roads. For low-traffic roads, the wet indirect tensile strength significantly affected pavement performance. The results of this research can help identify changes that should be made with regard to design, material selection, and construction in order to improve the performance and cost-effectiveness of future recycled roads.

Book excerpt: This report describes a project in which approximately 6,200 tons (5,630 Mg) of asphaltic concrete were recycled through a conventional asphalt batch plant. During the construction of the project, a buildup of asphalt-coated fines occurred in the dryer and the dust collector. The buildup is thought to have been associated with the fineness and/or the high asphalt content of the recycled mix. To solve the problem, a change was made in the recycling process. The project was completed using a heat transfer method with mix proportions as high as 50% recycled material added to 50% virgin aggregate.

Book excerpt: This report presents a study initiated in 1984 to develop specification guidelines and mix design recommendations and to obtain performance data on cold-mix recycling projects in Ohio. Future investment planning was the motivation for the Ohio Department of Transportation to consider cold-mix recycling of local roads as a maintenance alternative. Two mainline, low volume roads and one shoulder pavement were selected for this study. Documentation and evaluation of the projects are discussed generally in two parts. The first part includes the site selection criteria, pre-construction evaluation, mix designs, construction specifications and construction monitoring. The second part discusses performance evaluation through field inspection, data collection and laboratory evaluation of material properties.

Book excerpt: Recycling of aged asphalt concrete pavements has been demonstrated to be cost-effective and to reduce the demand for natural resources such as aggregate and asphalt. Because of the advantages derived when using recycled materials, the capability to predict long-term performance is needed so that optimum benefits can be obtained. This study was undertaken to evaluate the laboratory performance to recycled asphalt concrete mixtures and to compare these results to those measured for conventional asphalt concrete mixtures. Results of this study indicated a satisfactory comparison between laboratory performance of recycled mixtures and conventional mixtures. Fatigue analysis indicated that conventional mixtures would provide the greatest fatigue resistance in thick asphalt concrete layers at lower temperatures, while the recycled mixtures would provide the greatest fatigue resistance in thin asphalt layers at higher temperatures. Water susceptability was shown to be related more to aggregate type than to mixture type. The data show that recycled mixtures prepared with the recycling agent produced mixtures with the lowest durability and poorest low temperature performance when compared with the recycled mixtures prepared with AC-5 or compared with the conventional mixtures.

Book excerpt: The civil engineering sector accounts for a significant percentage of global material and energy consumption and is a major contributor of waste material. The ability to recycle and reuse concrete and demolition waste is critical to reducing environmental impacts in meeting national, regional and global environmental targets. Handbook of recycled concrete and demolition waste summarises key recent research in achieving these goals. Part one considers techniques for managing construction and demolition waste, including waste management plans, ways of estimating levels of waste, the types and optimal location of waste recycling plants and the economics of managing construction and demolition waste. Part two reviews key steps in handling construction and demolition waste. It begins with a comparison between conventional demolition and construction techniques before going on to discuss the preparation, refinement and quality control of concrete aggregates produced from waste. It concludes by assessing the mechanical properties, strength and durability of concrete made using recycled aggregates. Part three includes examples of the use of recycled aggregates in applications such as roads, pavements, high-performance concrete and alkali-activated or geopolymer cements. Finally, the book discusses environmental and safety issues such as the removal of gypsum, asbestos and alkali-silica reaction (ASR) concrete, as well as life-cycle analysis of concrete with recycled aggregates. Handbook of recycled concrete and demolition waste is a standard reference for all those involved in the civil engineering sector, as well as academic researchers in the field. Summarises key recent research in recycling and reusing concrete and demolition waste to reduce environmental impacts and meet national, regional and global environmental targets Considers techniques for managing construction and demolition waste, including waste management plans, ways of estimating levels of waste, the types and optimal location of waste recycling plants Reviews key steps in handling construction and demolition waste

This book was released on 1981 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design methods for pavement mixtures containing recycled asphalt concrete have been explored in many studies. Most methods of design are modelled after procedures originally developed for conventional construction with virgin raw materials. The unique properties of aged asphalt as raw material are rarely considered when applying conventional procedures. The approach developed by Witco Chemical assumes that each recycling project requires design and additives to compensate for aging effects. The purpose of this investigation was to ascertain if (1) the simplified method of design developed by Witco Chemical can be employed uniformly in all recycling operations using aged asphalt concrete as the main ingredient of the new mix, and (2) dynamic and fatigue testing are helpful in the evaluation of the recycled mix. The result of the study was an affirmative answer to both questions. A prerequisite for successful recycling, it was found, is the use of a recycling agent which provides for high mixing efficiency to restore the durability and consistency. The experiments carried out were in conjunction with a hot-mix recycling project on Interstate 90 near Ellensburg, Washington. Laboratory tests were performed on samples of the aged asphalt concrete before recycling and on mixtures containing added new aggregate to duplicate the mixtures used at the Ellensburg project. The recycling agents were added to the mixture by direct incorporation into the recovered asphalt (termed reconstituted asphalt) and by addition of the recycling agent and new aggregate to the crushed aged pavement. A mixture was also prepared with a virgin asphalt having the same viscosity at 60 C (140 F) as the reconstituted asphalt. A simple formula was used to determine the optimum asphalt content. This value compared favorably with the average of the Marshall and Hveem mix design values. Resilient moduli, permanent vertical deformations and fatigue life were determined by dynamic testing of the two recycled mixes and the two control mixes. Static tensile strength tests were also performed. The results indicated the resilient modulus for each mix to be within an acceptable range for bituminous pavements. The recycled mixtures showed lower plastic deformations than the completely fluxed reconstituted control mix. The recycled mixes and the reconstituted control mix showed higher fatigue resistance than the virgin control mix. The virgin control and reconstituted mixes showed a higher tensile strength than the recycled mixes. All values were still within an acceptable range for bituminous pavements.
