Book excerpt: The primary objective of this book is to offer practical means for strengthening the economics and policy dimension of the agroforestry discipline. This book, written by the leading experts in economics and agroforestry, encompasses case studies from Australia, China, Kenya, India, Indonesia, Malawi, Mexico, Micronesia, Tanzania, United Kingdom, United States, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The applied economic methodologies encompass a wide variety of case studies including enterprise/farm budget models through Faustmann models, Policy Analysis Matrix, production function approach, risk assessment models, dynamic programming, linear programming, meta-modeling, contingent valuation, attribute-based choice experiments, econometric modeling, and institutional economic analysis. It is our belief that these methodologies help agroforestry students and professionals conduct rigorous assessment of economic and policy aspects of agroforestry systems and to produce less biased and more credible information. Furthermore, the economic and policy issues explored in the book – profitability, environmental benefits, risk reduction, household constraints, rural development, and institutional arrangements – are central to further agroforestry adoption in both tropical and temperate regions. All of the chapters in this volume were subject to rigorous peer review by at least one other contributing author and one external reviewer. We would like to acknowledge the indispensable collaboration of those who provided careful external reviews: Ken Andrasko, Chris Andrew, Peter Boxall, Norman Breuer, Bill Hyde, Tom Holmes, Sherry Larkin, Jagannadharao Matta, Venkatrao Nagubadi, Roz Naylor, Thomas Randolph, Gerald Shively, Changyou Sun, Bo Jellesmark Thorsen, and Yaoqi Zhang. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do farmers plant and protect trees? This is the central question addressed in this volume. Taking 14 case studies from diverse ecological regions of South Asia, two major issues are discussed: traditional agroforestry patterns; and the response of farmers to the farm forestry programme. Using empirical data to analyze critically existing theories relating to farm forestry, the contributors highlight the importance of taking the practical perspective of the farmers themselves and developing an integrative approach.

Book excerpt: The second phase of the Forest and Farm Facility (FFF) aims at supporting forest and farm producers and their organizations (FFPOs) to enable climate-resilient landscapes and improved livelihoods, through the approval of small grants for producers organizations, training and exchanges, and the documentation and dissemination of good practices. The mid-term evaluation highlights the uniqueness of the FFF and its potential to influence global forestry narratives and practices, beyond the sum of its achievements in core countries, and recognizes that the FFF is broadening FAO’s corporate narrative and global positioning on forestry and its interface with agriculture, livelihoods and the environment. The FFF is highly relevant to national contexts with its outcomes well-matching national policies, and to FFPOs priorities and needs; it has effectively applied adaptive management from the onset of Phase II; and it has also contributed to strengthened and expanded partnerships among FFPOs and APEX organizations. The programme achieved satisfactory to highly satisfactory progress towards three of its four outcomes with limited resources, demonstrating high levels of cost-effectiveness. The monitoring and learning system is highly organized and well-coordinated around letters of agreement tracking, but it could improve with the inclusion of an internal results-based monitoring and evaluation system to track the evolution of longer-term results beyond the letter of agreement grant cycle. The FFF is responsive to gender in all countries and to indigenous producer organizations, while the strategy to include youth could be improved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper contains a discussion of policy options and operational strategies for improving social forestry programs. The analysis of the types of social forestry approaches reveals that many programs are not designed around well identified social actors, and neglect to ensure clear benefit distribution arrangements and incentives. Participatory social forestry strategies must aim at engaging the rural users of fuelwood into organized activities for producing and managing forests. The author argues that an evolutionary shift from simple foraging and gathering fuelwood in naturally grown forests to cultivating trees for fuelwood is necessary. Part one of the study discusses the general social prerequisites for reforestation programs. It focuses on land tenure variables in forestry, particularly under regimes of common property over land. Part two of the study broadens the analysis from communities, as one type of group, to several other types of social groups and units of social organization. The author argues that each development strategy must be formulated around a clearly identified social actor, interested in its outcome and capable to carry it out. However, it is noted that not each kind of group is suitable for each and all development actions.
