This book was released on 2005 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 3 million gallons of oil or refined petroleum products are spilled into U.S. waters every year. Oil dispersants (chemical agents such as surfactants, solvents, and other compounds) are used to reduce the effect of oil spills by changing the chemical and physical properties of the oil. By enhancing the amount of oil that physically mixes into the water, dispersants can reduce the potential that a surface slick will contaminate shoreline habitats. Although called for in the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 as a tool for minimizing the impact of oil spills, the use of chemical dispersants has long been controversial. This book reviews the adequacy of existing information and ongoing research regarding the effectiveness of dispersants as an oil spill response technique, as well as the effect of dispersed oil on marine and coastal ecosystems. Oil Spill Dispersants also includes recommended steps for policy makers faced with making hard choices regarding the use of dispersants as part of spill contingency planning efforts or during actual spills.

Book Synopsis Efficiency and Retentivity Testing and Performance of Sinking Agents in the Removal of Oil Spills by : James G. Dick
Download or read book Efficiency and Retentivity Testing and Performance of Sinking Agents in the Removal of Oil Spills written by James G. Dick and published by Information Canada. This book was released on 1975 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A method for the removal of oil spills on water involves the application of a sinking agent to the surface of the oil spill and the subsequent sinking of the spill. This condensed report contains techniques for the testing of sinking agents to determine their efficiency in the removal of oil, and their ability to retain oil once removed by the action of sinking. The report also provides information concerning the effects of oil layer thickness initially, free fall distance for the sinking agent, temperature and oil type on the efficiency of removal and on the retentivity"--Abstract, page i.

Book Synopsis Marine Pollution and Marine Waste Disposal by : E. A. Perason
Download or read book Marine Pollution and Marine Waste Disposal written by E. A. Perason and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine Pollution and Marine Waste Disposal documents the proceedings of the 2nd International Congress held in San Remo on December 17-21, 1973. This book is divided into seven main topics—general problems of marine pollution; criteria for marine waste disposal; marine water quality problems; assessment in biological terms of the effects on marine environment; design of treatment and disposal systems; experience with marine waste disposal systems; and research on marine pollution. In these topics, this compilation specifically discusses the need for international cooperation in coastal resource quality management; criteria for marine waste disposal in Yugoslavia; viral pollution considerations in marine waste disposal; and major pollutants in the marine environment. The conceptual design of marine waste disposal systems; pollution of coastal waters in Italy; and Southern California coastal water research project findings are also covered. This publication is valuable to marine biologists and environmentalists concerned with marine pollution and waste disposal systems.
Book Synopsis Oil Spill Dispersants by : Clayton/Payne
Download or read book Oil Spill Dispersants written by Clayton/Payne and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-08-26 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oil Spill Dispersants: Mechanisms of Action and Laboratory Tests provides a comprehensive summary of current information available regarding the general formulation of commercial dispersants and their function to lower oil-water interfacial tension. The book considers how chemical dispersants work for oil spills, the properties and chemistry of oils (including weathering state), the variables that affect dispersant performance, and the relationships between laboratory methods and field situations. The book also considers the strengths and limitations of specific laboratory tests, including brief discussions of the applicability of results for estimating dispersant performance in field trials or conditions encountered during real spill events. Laboratory tests are separated into four groups: tank tests, shake/flask tests, interfacial surface tension tests, and flume tests. Rapid-screen field tests are considered as a separate group. Recommendations for improvements in future laboratory testing are offered as well. Oil Spill Dispersants will be useful for regulators evaluating dispersant agents, field personnel involved with using dispersants, laboratory scientists studying performance and behavior of oil and dispersants, and managers responsible for designing studies related to the treatment of oil slicks with dispersants.
