Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An evaluation of representatives of the most popular types of concrete bridge deck sealers was conducted using a 2 pronged approach: performance testing via accelerated weathering coupled with water immersion, and indirect testing using instrumental and analytical techniques. The goals of the project were to assess the ability of the sealers to protect embedded reinforcing steel from corrosion and to develop an effective test procedure for screening commercial products for use by the Department on new construction.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the test program reviewed in this report was to evaluate commercially available sealing products for use on bridge concrete and to evaluate the effect of abrasion on the performance of these products. One of the simplifying assumptions of the Alberta sealer test method is that the penetration of water and chloride ions into concrete are similar in degree. The reduction in water absorption due to the application of a sealer can be measured easily and allows an inference as to the reduction of chloride migration into the concrete. This test method allows comparison of the waterproofing performance of various concrete sealer products in terms of a percentage that compares the weight gained by absorption in sealed cubes with that gained by uncoated control cubes of the same concrete. The test results are organized into two categories of sealers, namely coating (barrier type) sealers and penetrating sealers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many reports have been written concerning investigations of concrete sealants. The primary concern of most investigators is the protection of bridge decks from de-icing chemicals which cause surface scaling and, when allowed to permeate to reinforcing steel, result in deep spalling and general concrete deterioration. The problem of protecting abutments and pier tops from salt solutions entails a significantly different approach than the problem of protecting bridge decks. The epoxy resins become eligible as a protective material since one need not be concerned with slipperiness or its abrasive characteristics. Protection with linseed oil at regular intervals would prove bothersome because of the inaccessibility of pier tops after the deck is placed. The primary purpose of this investigation was to evaluate various commercial products in terms of their ability to prevent concrete scaling of bridge abutments and pier tops which are subject to salt water deterioration.

Book Synopsis Sealers for Portland Cement Concrete Highway Facilities by : Philip Dale Cady
Download or read book Sealers for Portland Cement Concrete Highway Facilities written by Philip Dale Cady and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis document will be of interest to materials, maintenance, and bridge engineers, and others responsible for protecting and maintaining portland cement concrete (PCC) roadway surfaces. It will be of special interest to materials research and testing officials, as well as to manufacturers who are concerned with developing and evaluating sealers for PCC highway facilities. The information in this Synthesis is limited to surface-applied liquid sealers that are primarily intended to retard the transmission of water and ions below the roadway surface. This report of the Transportation Research Board provides detailed information on generic concrete sealing materials that may be considered a primer on the topic, describing the various classes of sealers, their chemical characteristics, application to specific needs, and practice and performance characteristics. In addition, information is provided on evaluation and testing, application and costs, and the safety and environmental issues of concern with their use. Also included is a glossary of terms, extensive references, and an appendix that includes materials on a procedure for the estimation of service life and a model sealer specification.

Murphy and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reinforced concrete bridge substructures in Minnesota and other northern climates possess an elevated risk for chloride induced corrosion damage, which can reduce capacity and shorten service life. Research was performed in 1997 to investigate new strategies for corrosion mitigation, including electrochemical chloride extraction (ECE) and installation of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) wrap, which were applied on several corrosion-damaged piers on a 30-year-old bridge in Minneapolis. This report presents the results of follow-up research performed to assess the condition of the treated piers after 20 additional years of service, in order to understand the long-term effectiveness of the strategies implemented. The combination of ECE treatment and FRP wrap installation was found to be very effective, with no concrete distress or probable corrosion activity identified in the treated elements. Poor or mixed performance was observed with all other strategies, including both ECE treatment followed by application of a penetrating sealer and FRP wrap installation that was not accompanied with ECE. In addition, significant chloride contamination occurred in all of the subject piers within the 20 years since the initial study, indicating that neither FRP wrap nor concrete sealers prevented the ingress of new chlorides in the manner in which these systems were installed in the initial study. The findings indicated that performing ECE treatment, or installing FRP wraps, did not alone eliminate the risk of future corrosion activity. The most effective corrosion mitigation strategy to extend the service life of reinforced concrete bridge substructures was to minimize water and chloride exposure.
