Download or read book Precast Concrete Raft Units written by J.W. Bull and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of precast concrete is a well-established construction technique for beams, floors, panels, piles, walls and other structural elements. The advan tages of precasting include excellent quality control, economical large scale production, improved construction productivity (especially in adverse weather conditions) and immediate structure availability. These advantages have been recognized for precast concrete raft pavement units (raft units) since their introduction in the 1930s. In the last ten years there has been a considerable increase in the use ofraft units, especially in their range of applications, their analysis and their design. However, the description of these developments has been published in academicjournals and conference proceedings which are not readily available to practising raft unit pavement design engineers. Pavement design engineers are underincreasingpressure to produce raft unit designs that are inexpensive, long lasting and able to allow reorganization to accommodate changing use and uncertainty offuture loading requirements. This is the first book devoted to raft unit pavements, and will become a standard work of reference.

Book Synopsis Pavement Structural Design Practices by : Brian Lee Bowman
Download or read book Pavement Structural Design Practices written by Brian Lee Bowman and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to pavement, highway, and geotechnical engineers, and others interested in pavement structural design practices. Information is provided on flexible and rigid pavement design, design elements common to flexible and rigid pavement, and flexible and rigid pavement overlay design. Additionally, the synthesis discusses pavement research currently underway and recently completed by researchers of the United States and Canada. The structural design of flexible and rigid pavements has evolved from the application of engineering judgement to include a variety of processes. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the various methods for structural pavement design in the United States and several Canadian provinces. Only the structural aspects of design are considered, that is, those intended to provide strength or stiffness to the pavement. The functional aspects of design (such as skid resistance), are not considered.

Book Synopsis Concepts for the Development of a Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation System for Rigid Airfield Pavements by : Paul Thomas Foxworthy
Download or read book Concepts for the Development of a Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation System for Rigid Airfield Pavements written by Paul Thomas Foxworthy and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis develops a complete system for nondestructive testing and evaluation of rigid airfield pavements. An extensive review of present destructive and nondestructive equipment and methodologies is made to form the basis for selection of the equipment and analytical model used in this research. A brief description of the selected Dynatest Model 8000 Falling Weight Deflectometer and the ILLISLAB finite element computer model is presented. Three Air Force installations were chosen for in-depth study of pavement response to FWD loads under a variety of environmental and geological conditions. Techniques are presented to determine the location of maximum damage to rigid pavement slabs for one or any combination of aircraft, and the validity of the calculated stresses is established through comparisons of measured and predicted deflections at joints. Major study findings include: (1) new designations for pavement features based on actual loading conditions, (2) guidelines for planning and conducting large scale evaluations of major airfield systems, (3) a computer-based determination of E and K, (4) joint behavior prediction under fluctuating temperatures and their effect on generated slab stresses, (5) procedures to account for the annual distribution of traffic over the range of temperatures normally experienced at any facility, (6) a simplistic means of estimating total past damage from aircraft operations, and (7) development of computer programs to predict remaining structural life of rigid airfield pavements.
