Book excerpt: This paper studies the method for estimating the residual stress effects on brittle fracture of structural steel based on the Weibull stress criterion. First, brittle fracture tests were conducted for four-point bend notched specimens with and without compressive preloading. It is shown that the compressive preloading apparently decreases the critical crack tip opening displacement (CTOD). The critical CTOD of the preloaded specimen can be predicted from monotonically loaded test results based on the Weibull stress criterion. It has been found that the Weibull stress is an effective fracture parameter for brittle fracture initiation under tensile residual stress. Second, using wide plate specimens with and without welding residual stress subjected to uniform tension and three-point bend fracture toughness specimens, welding residual stresses effect on the brittle fracture strength is investigated. Experiments show that the critical CTOD of wide plate with welding residual stress is significantly smaller than that without residual stress. Constraint loss effect on CTOD of wide plate can be assessed by the equivalent CTOD ratio ?. ? is defined as ?=?3PB/?WP, where ?3PB and ?WP are CTODs of the standard fracture toughness specimen and wide plate, respectively, at the same level of the Weibull stress. Fracture assessment result using ? is shown within the context of failure assessment diagram. An excessive conservatism observed in the conventional procedure (?=1) is reasonably reduced by applying the equivalent CTOD ratio ?.

Book excerpt: Effects of residual stresses induced in a three-point bend CTOD specimen on brittle fracture initiation are studied on the basis of the Local Approach. Compressive residual stresses are produced near the crack tip by preloading at room temperature. The material used is a 780 MPa class high-strength steel. Fracture tests are conducted at low temperatures (-75 and -40°C) after preloading. The preloading apparently increases the fracture load and critical CTOD levels at the onset of brittle fracture from the reference levels at monotonic loading, which is due to the compressive residual stress field around the crack tip. The present study employs the Weibull stress fracture criterion to evaluate the brittle fracture resistance of the preloaded specimen. The Weibull stress is calculated by a 3D elastic-plastic FE analysis. Under the assumption that the critical Weibull stress at brittle fracture initiation is a material property independent of preloading, the critical CTOD of the preloaded specimens can be predicted from the fracture test results of monotonically loaded specimens.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fracture toughness properties of structural steels of 490-MPa strength class and weld metals under dynamic loading are studied in the light of the near crack tip stress fields. The loading rate in toughness tests range from 0.1 to 500 mm/s. The near-tip stress fields are analyzed by 3D-FEM considering the strain rate effect on the flow properties of materials. Temperature rise caused by high-speed plastic deformation is also included in the FE analysis. The critical CTOD at brittle fracture initiation decreases when increasing the loading rate. This is due to the elevation of a local stress near the crack tip. The local approach is applied to the dynamic fracture toughness evaluation. It is shown that the brittle fracture resistance evaluated in terms of the Weibull stress, an integrated stress over a highly stressed region near the crack tip, is a material property independent of the loading rate. Based on the Weibull stress fracture criterion, the dynamic fracture toughness can be predicted from static toughness results. An engineering procedure to estimate the loading rate effect on the fracture toughness is also presented.

Book excerpt: "Eleven peer-reviewed papers, written by experts in their field, provide an understanding of residual stresses, fatigue crack growth, fatigue lifetime predictions, and their effect on structural integrity. Residual stresses can be present due to processing and manufacturing of materials and structures, so it is imperative to understand how and why they can influence the test data that we used in structural design methodologies. Residual stresses may also be intentionally engineered into structures in attempts to improve fatigue life, and it is equally important that designers understand how to account for these potential effects on fatigue life."--Publisher's website.

Book excerpt: Improving the structural integrity together with the performance (weight, time to failure,...) of structures requires a persisting effort in the field of mechanics of materials and structures. This can be achieved by a better understanding of the relationships between microscopic mechanisms and the macroscopic material behavior and structural response with respect to damage and fracture. This improvement strategy of materials, structures and assement methods can be described as local approach to fracture. The local approach to fracture is an active research field. Initially developped in the context of steel structures (pressure vessels), its application domain has become wider and now deals with various kinds of materials (metallic alloys, metal matrix composites, polymers, elastomers, concrete) as well as various physical deformation and damage mechanisms (plasticity, creep, fatigue, ductile fracture, brittle fracture, ...). This volume contains the proceedings on an international conference dedicated to these issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Residual stress present in coupons used for fracture testing will influence the experimental determination of fracture toughness. Triaxial residual stress (e.g., due to welding) can alter both the driving force for fracture and the crack-tip constraint at a specified load, so that the apparent toughness of a coupon depends on the residual stress present. In this paper, we employ a micromechanical failure theory (the RKR model) to predict brittle fracture loads for three-point bend samples with and without triaxial residual stress. Finite element modeling is used in the study to introduce an idealized welding residual stress field, to simulate the crushing of the coupon by circular platens (referred to as homogenization or local compression), and to simulate three-point bend testing. Results show that the residual stress markedly changes load at fracture, which would be used to compute apparent fracture toughness. Furthermore, the method of superposition commonly used is not able to accurately predict this effect.
