Book excerpt: The need of today's construction whether it be residential, commercial or infrastructure is to cut costs while maintaining schedule, scope, and delivering the expected quality. This realization has brought to light the importance of project delivery methods. Project delivery methods are no longer seen only as procedures to follow for a construction project; they have become instruments that are being used to save money, deliver projects ahead of schedule and come up with innovative design solutions by utilizing the contractor's expertise. This thesis evaluates the pros and cons of project delivery methods with respect to trenchless construction. Trenchless technology methods not only provide solutions that are less disruptive to the social and ecological environment but also solutions that significantly reduce the life cycle cost of the project. With the choice of multiple project delivery systems available, this thesis evaluates each method for advantages and limitations that it brings to a trenchless construction project. The thesis also provides a Decision Support System (DSS) to aid in the selection of a specific project delivery method.

Book excerpt: These guidelines mark the completion of the Construction Productivity Advancement Research (CPAR) project 'Trenchless Construction: Evaluation of Methods and Materials to Install and Rehabilitate Underground Utilities.' CPAR is a cost-shared U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and construction industry research program. This 3-year project was conducted by the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station and the Trenchless Technology Center at Louisiana Tech University. The overall objective of this study was to develop guidelines that owners, engineers, and contractors could use to evaluate and select appropriate trenchless methods and equipment for their project requirements and site conditions. The guidelines focus on the three major elements of trenchless technology investigated in this study: rehabilitation of existing pipelines using cured-in-place (CIPP) and fold-and-formed pipe (FFP) methods, installation of small-diameter (2- to 10-in.) pipe lines using mini-horizontal directional drilling (mini-HDD) and installation of larger diameter pipelines using microtunneling. The guidelines are based primarily on the results of extensive laboratory and field investigations. (MM).

Book excerpt: TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 402: Construction Manager-at-Risk Project Delivery for Highway Programs explores current methods in which state departments of transportation and other public engineering agencies are applying construction manager-at-risk (CMR) project delivery to their construction projects. CMR project delivery is an integrated team approach to the planning, design, and construction of a highway project, to help control schedule and budget, and to help ensure quality for the project owner. The team consists of the owner; the designer, who might be an in-house engineer; and the at-risk construction manager. The goal of this project delivery method is to engage at-risk construction expertise early in the design process to enhance constructability, manage risk, and facilitate concurrent execution of design and construction without the owner relinquishing control over the details of design as it would in a design-build project.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can contractors and specialists add value to a project by theirearly involvement in design, pricing, risk management andprogramming? How can this be structured and what role docontracts have to play? What is the impact on procurement andproject management? Commentators from Banwell to Egan have recommended earliercontractor appointments, and this has also been linked tosuccessful project partnering. How are the two related? Early Contractor Involvement in Building Procurementconsiders the case for a two stage procurement approach based on asystem of agreed project processes during the preconstructionphase. It examines the ways in which a contract can describeand support this model throughout its procurement, partnering andproject management, and is illustrated with case studies taken fromprojects and programmes across the construction and engineeringindustry. The roles of the various parties involved, the obstacles theyencounter and the benefits they can achieve are examined indetail. There is practical guidance on how to improve speed, economy, sustainability, change control, dispute avoidance, andclient satisfaction. This book bridges the gap betweencontract law, partnering and project management and will beessential reading for middle and senior management at constructioncontractors, consultants and clients in both the public and privatesectors.

Book excerpt: This book showcases cutting-edge research papers from the 6th International Conference on Research into Design (ICoRD 2017) – the largest in India in this area – written by eminent researchers from across the world on design process, technologies, methods and tools, and their impact on innovation, for supporting design for communities. While design traditionally focused on the development of products for the individual, the emerging consensus on working towards a more sustainable world demands greater attention to designing for and with communities, so as to promote their sustenance and harmony - within each community and across communities. The special features of the book are the insights into the product and system innovation process, and the host of methods and tools from all major areas of design research for the enhancement of the innovation process. The main benefit of the book for researchers in various areas of design and innovation are access to the latest quality research in this area, with the largest collection of research from India. For practitioners and educators, it is exposure to an empirically validated suite of theories, models, methods and tools that can be taught and practiced for design-led innovation. The contents of this volume will be of use to researchers and professionals working in the areas on industrial design, manufacturing, consumer goods, and industrial management.
