Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the identification of segregation on asphalt pavements has been based on visual observations around the world, it is essential to develop a quantitative method to detect the presence and severity of segregation. The nonnuclear density device was selected for the field measurements at nine test sites, and cores were taken for laboratory testing. The nonnuclear density difference between segregated and control areas was found to increase with increasing the segregation severity. For medium or heavy segregated areas, the nonnuclear density difference was more than 90 kg/m3.In medium or heavy segregated areas, the air voids increased by 20 % and the indirect tensile strength decreased by 8 % as compared to the control areas. The criterion to detect segregation was based on the statistical differences in nonnuclear measured density values with a p-value 0.05.If a statistical difference in nonnuclear density between segregated and control areas existed, the chance of aggregate gradation difference in percent passing the 3/8 in., No.4 and No.8 sieves for medium and heavy segregation was 78 and 64 %, respectively. In addition to the field nonnuclear density readings, the material properties of asphalt mixtures obtained from 108 cores, including texture depth and percent air voids were selected as independent variables to develop a model to predict the calibrated nonnuclear density difference between the segregated and control areas. This quantitative model holds a great promise as a tool to identify potential areas of segregation using both lab data and field nonnuclear density measurements for quality assurance purposes.

Book Synopsis Effect of Segregation on Hot Mix Asphalt Using the Asphalt Pavement Analyzer by : Stephen Alan Cross
Download or read book Effect of Segregation on Hot Mix Asphalt Using the Asphalt Pavement Analyzer written by Stephen Alan Cross and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Segregation of hot mix asphalt is a recurring problem in the paving industry. There is little documented research that quantifies the effects of segregation on mix properties and performance. The Asphalt Pavement Analyzer (APA) is a new class of pavement tester available to evaluate pavement performance. The APA can evaluate the rutting potential, moisture susceptibility and fatigue life of bituminous mixtures. Materials were available from a previous study (K-TRAN: KU-96-6) on segregation for use in evaluating the use of the APA with Kansas mixtures and materials. Two surface mixes, a BM-1B and BM-2, were fabricated to different levels of segregation as determined in the K-TRAN: KU-96-6 study. The mixtures were tested in the APA for rutting, moisture damage and fatigue life.
Book Synopsis Identifying Segregation in Hot Mix Asphalt Pavements Using Rolling Nuclear Gage Measurements and Infrared Imaging by : M. Stroup-Gardiner
Download or read book Identifying Segregation in Hot Mix Asphalt Pavements Using Rolling Nuclear Gage Measurements and Infrared Imaging written by M. Stroup-Gardiner and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous research indicated that density, gradation, and asphalt content change due to segregation. A rolling nuclear gage capable of measuring both density and hydrogen count was evaluated for its ability to detect and measure both density and asphalt content. Eight projects (four recently constructed pavements and four during construction) were used to evaluate this instrument. Longitudinal density profiles were obtained for each project at transverse quarter points across the lane. Additional testing included infrared thermography and traditional destructive testing of cores.

Book Synopsis Evaluation of Non-nuclear Density Gauges for HMAC by : Stephen Sebesta
Download or read book Evaluation of Non-nuclear Density Gauges for HMAC written by Stephen Sebesta and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes research efforts to determine if commercially available non-nuclear density gauges can be used for TxDOT's density profile and joint density testing procedures. Researchers conducted testing with a Troxler 3450 nuclear gauge (operated in the thin-lift mode) and the Pavetracker (PT) and Pavement Quality Indicator (PQI) non-nuclear gauges. In a laboratory setting, research showed all the gauges could be affected by mix temperature, where gauge readings typically decreased with decreasing mix temperature. All gauges readings were also impacted by moisture, with the nuclear gauge least impacted. The precision of all gauges in the lab was good, with standard deviations below 0.5 pcf with the non-nuclear gauges and less than 1.0 pcf with the nuclear gauge. Field-testing showed the PQI was a suitable alternative to the nuclear gauge for density profiling and joint density testing.
Book Synopsis A Working Review of Available Non-nuclear Equipment for Determining In-place Density of Asphalt by : Shad M. Sargand
Download or read book A Working Review of Available Non-nuclear Equipment for Determining In-place Density of Asphalt written by Shad M. Sargand and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current non-nuclear methods of measuring asphalt pavement density use electrical properties of asphalt. Two known instruments, the PaveTrackerTM and the PQI Model 300, estimate pavement density by inferring the relative proportion of air-filled voids in the asphalt from a measure of dielectric permittivity. Under this project, currently available and new methods of determining in-place asphalt density were investigated. The investigation included a laboratory study of the PaveTrackerTM's ability to accurately measure density under a variety of conditions, including coarse or fine aggregate in mix, presence of internal and/or surface moisture, sample area, and sample depth. Both the PaveTrackerTM and the PQI Model 300 were evaluated in the field by measuring density of measurement locations at each of 24 project sites and comparing to corresponding values measured by a nuclear gauge and laboratory tests. Recommendations for practice, including expected payoff results in using them, are given.
Book Synopsis Effects of Segregation on Mix Properties of Hot Mix Asphalt by : Stephen Alan Cross
Download or read book Effects of Segregation on Mix Properties of Hot Mix Asphalt written by Stephen Alan Cross and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Segregation of hot mix asphalt is a recurring problem in the paving industry. There is little documented research that quantifies the effect of segregation on mix properties and pavement performance. Many state highway agencies are embracing performance based quality control/quality assurance (QC/QA) programs but only a few states have performed studies to quantify the effect of segregation on pavement performance. This study was conducted on four newly constructed pavements which had noticeable spots of segregation. Cores were obtained from both segregated and non-segregated sections of the four pavements. The unit weights of the pavements were determined using a thin-lift nuclear gauge. The change in gradation on the 4.75 mm sieve was compared with asphalt content, nuclear gauge unit weight, core unit weight, and macro texture to determine if an indicator test could quantify segregation. The cores were tested for moisture sensitivity, fatigue life, and indirect tensile strength to determine the effect of segregation on performance.
