Different strains of MG have been used as vaccines in multiple-age commercial layer farms in an effort to protect the birds against more virulent field strains. The lower level of protection afforded by the low virulent MG strain vaccines provides an opportunity to the use of an overlay (revaccination) with an F-strain M. gallisepticum (FMG) later in their production cycles. In the present study, three trials were conducted to investigate the effects of prelay vaccinations of ts-11 strain MG, MG-Bacterin, or their combination, in conjunction with a FMG overlay after peak production in commercial layers. The following treatments were utilized at 10 wk of age (woa): 1) Control (no vaccinations); 2) ts-11 MG vaccine; 3) MG-Bacterin vaccine; and 4) ts-11 MG and MG-Bacterin combination. At 45 woa, all the birds in trial 1 and half of the birds in each treatment group in trials 2 and 3 were overlaid with an FMG vaccine. Various parameters including performance, internal egg and eggshell quality, blood, and visceral characteristics of the birds were evaluated.

This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chickens infected with Mycoplasma gallisepticum, the primary etiologic agent of chronic respiratory disease (CRD), present with significant respiratory complications. The host response is often immunopathogenic and contributes to increased tracheal thickness due to the chemotaxis of leukocytes, cellular damage at the mucosal surface, and the inability to clear the infection. The response to M. gallisepticum is complex and the differences that lead to a maladaptive versus beneficial response are poorly understood. To elucidate the extent of the host response to virulent and attenuated strains, we conducted next-generation sequencing on samples taken directly from the host’s tracheal mucosa after infection with either virulent Rlow, or laboratory attenuated vaccine strains Mg 7 or GT5. In the first study, transcriptional analysis of the host response to virulent Rlow over a 7-day infection was conducted on samples from days 1, 3, 5 and 7. Data indicated a rapid, pro-inflammatory response, identifying numerous genes involved in immune pathways that peaked 3 days post-infection, and a significant metabolic response observed on days 1 and 3. Further analysis revealed increased expression of host cell receptors that likely heightens their sensitivity to damage- and pathogen- associated molecular patterns and results in the production of cytokines and chemokines that recruit and activate immune cells. In the second study, comparative transcriptomics identified differences between the early host response to Rlow and laboratory vaccine strains, Mg 7 and GT5. Infection with these attenuated strains resulted in a dampened host response involving significantly fewer immune and metabolism-related genes, limited differential expression of host cell receptors, and decreased production of cytokines and chemokines. Future vaccines should aim to target immune genes active in Mg 7 and GT5 infection while avoiding those uniquely differential in Rlow infection to induce a protective, and durable adaptive response while avoiding immune-related exacerbation of disease.

Book excerpt: Backyard Poultry Medicine and Surgery is a practical resource offering guidance on developing diagnostic and treatment plans for individual companion poultry or small flocks. Organized by body system to aid in developing a differential diagnosis list for common presenting signs, the book provides all the information clinicians need to effectively treat backyard poultry. Written by experts from both the commercial poultry field and the companion avian field, the book provides thorough coverage of both common and less common diseases of backyard chickens, ducks, and other poultry. The book begins with introductory chapters covering general information, an overview of US laws, and basic husbandry concerns, then moves into specific disease chapters organized by system. The book takes an individual medicine perspective throughout, with photographs, radiographs, and histopathological photomicrographs to illustrate principles and diseases. Backyard Poultry Medicine and Surgery is an invaluable guide to diseases and treatments for any practitioners treating backyard poultry.

The rapidly developing discipline of molecular biology and the rapidly expanding knowledge of the PPLO were brought together at this meeting. In addition to the PPLO specialists, the conference invited Julius Marmur to compare PPLO DNA to DNA of other organisms; David Garfinkel, who was one of the first to develop computer models of metabolism; Cyrus Levinthal to talk about coding; and Henry Quastler to discuss information theory constraints on very small cells. The conference was an announcement of the role of PPLO in the fundamental understanding of molecular biology. Looking back 40-some years to the Connecticut meeting, it was a rather bold enterprise. The meeting was international and inter-disciplinary and began a series of important collaborations with influences resonating down to the present. If I may be allowed a personal remark, it was where I first met Shmuel Razin, who has been a leading figure in the emerging mycoplasma research and a good friend. This present volume is in some ways the fulfillment of the promise of that early meeting. It is an example of the collaborative work of scientists in building an understanding of fundamental aspects of biology.

Book excerpt: This volume focuses on those instances when benign and even beneficial relationships between microbes and their hosts opportunistically change and become detrimental toward the host. It examines the triggering events which can factor into these changes, such as reduction in the host’s capacity for mounting an effective defensive response due to nutritional deprivation, coinfections and seemingly subtle environmental influences like the amounts of sunlight, temperature, and either water or air quality. The effects of environmental changes can be compounded when they necessitate a physical relocation of species, in turn changing the probability of encounter between microbe and host. The change also can result when pathogens, including virus species, either have modified the opportunist or attacked the host’s protective natural microflora. The authors discuss these opportunistic interactions and assess their outcomes in both aquatic as well as terrestrial ecosystems, highlighting the impact on plant, invertebrate and vertebrate hosts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compendium is the result of the FEMS Workshop on "Rapid Diagnosis of Mycoplasmas" which I organized and which took place in Jerusalem, Israel, August 11-23, 1991. The first week's sessions were held at a resort on the outskirts of Jerusalem and consisted of lectures and discussions. This part was modelled along the lines of the Gordon Conference in the USA, i.e., in an intimate atmo sphere in which everyone could mix and exchange ideas, and was very benefi cial. About 100 scientists from around the world attended the first week. Dur ing the first week, the biology, molecular biology and pathophysiology of myco plasmas, as well as all the main diagnostic methods were covered, including both conventional and the newer technologies. The session on mycoplasmas in the human urogenital tracts was held in conjunction with the Israel Society for the Study and Prevention of Sexually Transmitted Disease. The second week was a laboratory session and was held at the Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical School campus in Ein Karem, Jerusalem. All ex periments were conducted by eminent specialists in their field. The lab session had 36 participants from 19 countries who used the most modern techniques for the diagnosis of mycoplasmas in medicine, veterinary medicine and agri culture. The efficacy of several commercial kits were also tested at this time. I want to again thank everyone who helped and supported this work shop, as well as the authors of the various chapters.
