Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assembles concisely written chapters by world-leaders in the field summarizing recent advances in understanding microbial responses to hydrocarbons. Subjects treated include mechanisms of sensing, hydrocarbon tolerance and degradation as well as an overview on hydrophobic modification of biomolecules. Other chapters are dedicated to issues related to the reduced bioavailability of hydrocarbons, which differentiates this class of compounds form many others, but which of central importance to understand the ecophysiological consequences. This book should be standard literature in any laboratory working in this area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In situ bioremediationâ€"the use of microorganisms for on-site removal of contaminantsâ€"is potentially cheaper, faster, and safer than conventional cleanup methods. But in situ bioremediation is also clouded in uncertainty, controversy, and mistrust. This volume from the National Research Council provides direction for decisionmakers and offers detailed and readable explanations of: the processes involved in in situ bioremediation, circumstances in which it is best used, and methods of measurement, field testing, and modeling to evaluate the results of bioremediation projects. Bioremediation experts representing academic research, field practice, regulation, and industry provide accessible information and case examples; they explore how in situ bioremediation works, how it has developed since its first commercial use in 1972, and what research and education efforts are recommended for the future. The volume includes a series of perspective papers. The book will be immediately useful to policymakers, regulators, bioremediation practitioners and purchasers, environmental groups, concerned citizens, faculty, and students.

Book excerpt: The IWA Conference on Environmental Biotechnology: Advancement in Water and Wastewater Application in the Tropics, held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 9-10 December 2003, was a peer-reviewed conference. It was specially organized for Malaysia and the Asia-Pacific region in collaboration between Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), the International Water Association (IWA), the Malaysia Water Association and the Malaysian Biotechnology Directorate. Papers presented in the conference covered current perspectives on the advancement of water and wastewater applications using environmental biotechnology, as well as methodologies, techniques, modelling, case studies, directions and other specific issues. The emphasis was also on its feasibility in developing countries. The conference also focussed on the biodegradation and bioconversion, health related microorganisms, microbial community structure and analysis, sludge reduction and material recovery, drinking water treatment and safety, nutrient removal and recovery, sensors, modelling and control, molecular techniques, integrated treatment concepts and biological nutrient removal for developing countries, particularly in the tropical region. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unfortunate by-product of industrialization is the contamination of soil and water resources with toxic metals, which becomes an environmental concern when the concentration in soils begins to affect human health. Current remediation methods applicable to contaminated soils are expensive and environmentally invasive since they are based primarily on civil-engineering techniques. This book represents an overview of efforts in exploiting biological and chemical processes to reduce the inherent risk associated with metal-contaminated soils. It presents a comprehensive, up-to-date analysis of in situ immobilization and inactivation of toxic metals by means of plants, microorganisms and invertebrates.
