Book excerpt: "Externally bonded carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates are a feasible and economical alternative to traditional methods for strengthening and stiffening deficient reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete girders. The bond between FRP and concrete is the key factor controlling the behavior of concrete structures that are strengthened with FRP composites. Several experiments show that debonding failure happens frequently before FRP rupture, and therefore the FRP strength cannot be fully utilized. For design accuracy, the FRP strength must be reduced due to the debonding failure. This paper analyzes the effect of the strengthening technique on the response and failure modes of RC beams. A non-linear RC beam element model with bond-slip between the concrete and the FRP laminates is used to study the reduction factor of FRP tensile strength of simply supported strengthened RC beams"--Abstract, leaf iii.

Book excerpt: This book analyses the current knowledge on structural behaviour of RC elements and structures strengthened with composite materials (experimental, analytical and numerical approaches for EBR and NSM), particularly in relation to the above topics, and the comparison of the predictions of the current available codes/recommendations/guidelines with selected experimental results. The book shows possible critical issues (discrepancies, lacunae, relevant parameters, test procedures, etc.) related to current code predictions or to evaluate their reliability, in order to develop more uniform methods and basic rules for design and control of FRP strengthened RC structures. General problems/critical issues are clarified on the basis of the actual experiences, detect discrepancies in existing codes, lacunae in knowledge and, concerning these identified subjects, provide proposals for improvements. The book will help to contribute to promote and consolidate a more qualified and conscious approach towards rehabilitation and strengthening existing RC structures with composites and their possible monitoring.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the details of research study on the use of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) sheets to strengthen the Pre-stressed concrete TxDOT Tx-28 bridge girders in flexure and shear. Four girders were subjected to destructive test in this research. First girder as control specimen without any CFRP applied on it, Second and third girders were flexural strengthened for one and two layers of CFRP and the forth girder is shear strengthened with one layer CFRP. Experimental phases along with the comparison of test results in terms of flexural and shear capacity of bridge girders, strains and deflections are discussed with reference to control and CFRP strengthened specimens. The CFRP strengthening was designed based on the ACI 440 recommendations. The report details the installation process as well as a load-testing program utilized to assess the effectiveness of the strengthening system. The installation process was found to be rapid and simple. The bonding between the FRP installed and the concrete surface is verified by pull off test. Adding to this in order to monitor the strain and displacement, we had strain gages on the surface of FRP at the tension and compression zones of the girders and two transducers near the supports and two more transducers at the center. Good agreement was obtained with the experimental and theoretical findings of strength, strains and deflections. Overall, the strengthened girders behaved as predicted when subjected to the design loads. The detailed design of FRP strengthening is system is reported in this report.

Book excerpt: CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) laminates have been used as externally bonded reinforcements for retrofitting and structural strengthening of concrete structures. The adequacy of the CFRP bonding highly depends on the bond integrity between the concrete and CFRP laminates. Considering the reliability of this bonding technique, premature debonding of laminates from the concrete substrate is a major concern. The bond performance may be influenced directly by various parameters; some of the parameters like surface wetness, surface preparation, presence of voids in concrete substrate and overhead versus on the top installation of CFRP laminate have been discussed in this study. During the installation of the composite system, the bond can be comprised due to poor workmanship or unsuitable environmental conditions; improper cure or installation or surface preparation can cause voids, inclusions, debonds and delamination at the CFRP-substrate level. In this study, assessment of the CFRP-concrete bond for beams strengthened in flexure was carried out. Non-Destructive evaluation methods using Ground Penetrating RADAR, Ultrasound Tomography, Thermography and Schmidt hammer were applied to detect possible disbonds between CFRP-Concrete interfaces. Ground Penetration RADAR was effective in finding the sub-surface defects that affect the bond quality, infrared thermography and ultrasound tomography could detect both surface and subsurface delamination. Further, destructive techniques were executed to determine the type of failure in the CFRP retrofitted beams to correlate it with the quality of the bond. This study may serve as a valuable reference for optimization and inspection of CFRP-Concrete bond at the interface, using Non-destructive testing devices for practical applications.

Book excerpt: This book deals with the introduction of various kinds of advanced composite materials such as carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP), glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP), aramid fiber-reinforced polymer (AFRP), and basalt fiber-reinforced polymer (BFRP). This book covers the advantages and disadvantages of these advanced composite materials. The primary advantages, such as high specific strength and stiffness, of advance composite materials result in lighter and durable structures. On the other hand, its linear elastic behavior till failure has been highlighted as the main disadvantage for their structural applications. This book also highlights the various forms in which the FRP components are tailored and stacked up to optimize its strength and stiffness to deliver the high-performance structural as well as non-structural components in its real-life application. The various forms in which FRP materials are developed are described such as uni-directional, cross-ply, angle-ply, hybrid, and functionally graded composites. In addition, various forms in which these materials stacked and/ bonded to fabricate the various structural and non-structural components are described. Most importantly, techniques to extract plant-based cellulosic fibers and its application to fabricate the various forms of sustainable composite products are described. In addition, development of nano-particle-enforced cellulosic fibers for sustainable industrial products has also been presented. Furthermore, the use of advanced composites and natural fiber-based composites has been demonstrated for repair, rehabilitation, and retrofitting of deficient structural systems. Moreover, the comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art research on the test methods for material characterization at room and elevated temperature is presented which will be of high interest to scientists, researchers, students, and engineers working in the fields of composite materials such as FRPs and other forms of composites such as fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC). This book is also helpful for undergraduate, masters, and most importantly Ph.D. research scholars for developing their fundamental understanding on advanced composite materials and their applications in construction as well as industrial sectors.

Book excerpt: The Concrete Solutions series of International Conferences on Concrete Repair began in 2003, with a conference held in St. Malo, France in association with INSA Rennes, followed by the second conference in 2006 ( with INSA again, at St. Malo, France), and the third conference in 2009 (in Padova and Venice, in association with the University of Padova). Now in 2011, the event is being held in Dresden in Germany and has brought together some 112 papers from 33 countries. Whereas electrochemical repair tended to dominate the papers in earlier years, new developments in structural strengthening with composites have been an increasingly important topic, with a quarter of the papers now focusing on this area. New techniques involving Near Surface Mounted (NSM) carbon fibre rods, strain hardening composites, and new techniques involving the well established carbon fibre and polyimide wrapping and strengthening systems are presented. Seventeen papers concentrate on case studies which are all-important in such conferences, to learn about what works (and what doesn’t work) on real structures. Thirteen papers are devoted to new developments in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT). Other topics include service life modelling, fire damage, surface protection methods and coatings, patch repair, general repair techniques and whole life costing. This book is essential reading for anyone engaged in the concrete repair field, from engineers, to academics and students and also to clients, who, as the end user, are ultimately responsible for funding these projects and making those difficult decisions about which system or method to use.

Book excerpt: The global response to COVID-19 has demonstrated the importance of vigilance and preparedness for infectious diseases, particularly influenza. There is a need for more effective influenza vaccines and modern manufacturing technologies that are adaptable and scalable to meet demand during a pandemic. The rapid development of COVID-19 vaccines has demonstrated what is possible with extensive data sharing, researchers who have the necessary resources and novel technologies to conduct and apply their research, rolling review by regulators, and public-private partnerships. As demonstrated throughout the response to COVID-19, the process of research and development of novel vaccines can be significantly optimized when stakeholders are provided with the resources and technologies needed to support their response. Vaccine Research and Development to Advance Pandemic and Seasonal Influenza Preparedness and Response focuses on how to leverage the knowledge gained from the COVID-19 pandemic to optimize vaccine research and development (R&D) to support the prevention and control of seasonal and pandemic influenza. The committee's findings address four dimensions of vaccine R&D: (1) basic and translational science, (2) clinical science, (3) manufacturing science, and (4) regulatory science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research provides a methodology for evaluation of durability related strength loss of bonded carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) systems applied to concrete beams. The report addresses test methods to establish a durability strength reduction factor, identification of corresponding field exposure conditions affecting durability, and suggestions for the application of the durability strength reduction factor for design of field applications. The durability strength reduction factor is a measure of the loss in strength over time due to environmental exposure. It is defined as the ratio of the flexural strength of a 4 in. x 4 in. x 14 in. concrete beam reinforced with CFRP exposed at 140°F and submerged in water or 100% relative humidity for 60 days to the flexural strength of a control specimen. The resulting durability strength reduction factor may be used to evaluate CFRP system performance. Two field environments are suggested: Wet and Air. In a Wet environment water accumulates at the bond surface. This is the default condition and corresponds to test results in submerged water at 140°F for 60 days. An Air environment allows drying between wetting episodes so water cannot accumulate on the bond surface. This condition corresponds to test results in 100% relative humidity at 140°F for 60 days.
