Book excerpt: Starting in the fall of 2007 students from the University of Vermont, New York University, and the University of Illinois have implememnted FfL in the fifth and sixth grades of the Mon Repos Combine and Patience Primary Schools, Mon Repos village, St. Lucia. Qualitative and quantitative assesments were conducted to determine the program effectiveness, including in the summer of 2008, in which pre and posttests were administered to program participants to assess change in HIV/AIDS related knowledge. In January 2009, a five-month follow up was administerd to summer 2008 program participants. The qualitative assesment examined the effectiveness of the training of University of Vermont students trained to deliver the GRS curriculum. The quantitative assesment measured change in students knowledge over time defined by the survey instrument. It was found that students' knowledge did increase as a result of the FfL program. The qualitative assesment confirmed the programs theoretical basis and that it was culturally appropriate in St. Lucia. However, it was found that the FfL program needs to be more effective in sustaining the program over time. In addition, it is suggested that to get a true understanding of the FfL program, a longitudinal study of program participants would be necessary to measure health outcomes.

The curriculum was developed with particular attention to health education concepts, assumptions and components. Furthermore, several relevant behavioural theories guided the intervention study and lent support as the bedrock for the curriculum. Apart from the aforementioned components, the intervention features that guided the development of the curriculum was the inclusion of parents or guardians (significant persons) in the study, involvement of modeling and demonstrations as health education strategies instead of over-emphasis in only cognitive learning. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this meta-analysis is to explore the effectiveness of current school-based HIV prevention interventions for adolescents. Past meta-analyses have indicated that there is a moderate effect for HIV prevention interventions, but a meta-analysis of school-based interventions had not been performed. The 24 studies included in the meta-analysis were those that adhered to basic empirical standards and reported enough quantitative material to calculate a Cohen's "d" statistic for each study. The 24 studies yielded 28 separate effect sizes, with an overall N = 24,871. The effect size of individual studies was computed, and then pooled to generate an overall effect size for the body of research. The results indicate that there was a moderate positive effect for school-based interventions overall (d = 0.3125, CI = 0.27-0.32), but that there needs to be improvement in the field of school-based HIV prevention that takes into account the effect of several moderating variables. The following ten moderators had a direct bearing on the magnitude of intervention effect in this analysis: length of intervention, choice of dependent measure, type of intervention leader, length of interventionist training, age match between the participants and the leader, cultural group, socio-economic class, gender, type of theory employed, and the use of a theory. While it is difficult to quantify human behavior that includes such diverse components as affect, cognition, and behavior, an improvement in the theoretical rationale behind school-based interventions which incorporates affective processes that bypass cognition would help improve the success of prevention messages.

Book excerpt: The authors report results from a randomized evaluation comparing three school-based HIV/AIDS interventions in Kenya: (1) training teachers in the Kenyan Government's HIV/AIDS-education curriculum; (2) encouraging students to debate the role of condoms and to write essays on how to protect themselves against HIV/AIDS; and (3) reducing the cost of education. Their primary measure of the effectiveness of these interventions is teenage childbearing, which is associated with unprotected sex. The authors also collected measures of knowledge, attitudes, and behavior regarding HIV/AIDS. After two years, girls in schools where teachers had been trained were more likely to be married in the event of a pregnancy. The program had little other impact on students' knowledge, attitudes, and behavior, or on the incidence of teen childbearing. The condom debates and essays increased practical knowledge and self-reported use of condoms without increasing self-reported sexual activity. Reducing the cost of education by paying for school uniforms reduced dropout rates, teen marriage, and childbearing.
