This book was released on 1988 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to assess various measures to provide streambank protection along the left descending (i.e., north) bank of the South Raccoon River in Dallas County, Iowa. A water pipe, which conveys domestic water to Stuart, Iowa, in neighboring Guthrie County, underlies the riverbank and riverbed and is being threatened by bank erosion. Concrete-Filled Mattress, Riprap Protection, and No Action were considered as alternatives to control the erosion at the study site. Of these alternatives, Riprap Protections was chosen as the selected plan because of its lower construction cost and because it was more environmentally sound. The selected plan entails grading and shaping 150 linear feet of the eroded riverbank (75 feet on either side of the buried water line) to provide a uniform slope of 1V on 2H, and placing an 18-inch layer of Iowa Class D riprap as shown on plates 2 and 3. An estimated 600 tons (i.e., 400 cubic yards) of graded riprap is needed to construct the streambank protection project. Approximately 142 cubic yards of material will be placed below the ordinary high water elevation of 901.5 feet National Geodetic Vertical Datum (NGVD). An environmental review of the proposed action indicates that the proposed project would not result in significant effects on the environment. Therefore, an environment impact statement will not be prepared. (fr).

Book excerpt: The first hands-on instruction guide to landform grading and revegetation Landform grading provides a cost-effective, attractive, and environmentally compatible way to construct slopes and other landforms that are stable and that blend in with the natural surroundings. Landform grading design and construction technology have advanced rapidly during the past decade, and this book explains the technique, its uses, its various applications, and its significant advantages. Landforming: An Environmental Approach to Hillside Development, Mine Reclamation and Watershed Restoration, presents the first comprehensive and practical guidebook to the innovative techniques of landform grading and revegetation. Citing numerous practical applications in such areas as hillside housing developments, mass grading operations, surface mining and watershed reclamation projects, the authors--one an internationally recognized instructor and the other an engineer with over thirty years of practical experience in the field--have teamed up to provide valuable information on: The aesthetic and ecological benefits of landform grading and revegetation Analyses that demonstrate the stability of landform designed slopes Real-world design/construction procedures Construction in both upland slope areas and in stream corridors Analytical procedures and design aids to assist implementation Well documented and comprehensive case studies of actual projects Written in straightforward language and liberally illustrated with informative photographs and schematic drawings, the text should prove of value to practicing professionals in such diverse fields as land planning, civil and geotechnical engineering, landscape architecture, and geology as well as to personnel in a variety of local, state and federal regulatory agencies and environmental interest groups. HORST J. SCHOR is the originator of the Landforming and Revegetation Concept and is Principal of H.J. Schor Consulting. He has developed landform grading designs that have been implemented in a variety of hillside grading and mining reclamation projects for a diverse list of clients. He has been a guest lecturer at The University of Wisconsin-Madison, The University of Dresden, Germany and The University of California at Irvine. DONALD H. GRAY, PHD, is Professor Emeritus of Civil and Environmental Engineering at The University of Michigan. In addition to speaking and teaching internationally, he has co-authored three books on subjects related geotechnical engineering and biotechnical slope protection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of the first edition (1994) there have been rapid developments in the application of hydrology, geomorphology and ecology to stream management. In particular, growth has occurred in the areas of stream rehabilitation and the evaluation of environmental flow needs. The concept of stream health has been adopted as a way of assessing stream resources and setting management goals. Stream Hydrology: An Introduction for Ecologists Second Edition documents recent research and practice in these areas. Chapters provide information on sampling, field techniques, stream analysis, the hydrodynamics of moving water, channel form, sediment transport and commonly used statistical methods such as flow duration and flood frequency analysis. Methods are presented from engineering hydrology, fluvial geomorphology and hydraulics with examples of their biological implications. This book demonstrates how these fields are linked and utilised in modern, scientific river management. * Emphasis on applications, from collecting and analysing field measurements to using data and tools in stream management. * Updated to include new sections on environmental flows, rehabilitation, measuring stream health and stream classification. * Critical reviews of the successes and failures of implementation. * Revised and updated windows-based AQUAPAK software. This book is essential reading for 2nd/3rd year undergraduates and postgraduates of hydrology, stream ecology and fisheries science in Departments of Physical Geography, Biology, Environmental Science, Landscape Ecology, Environmental Engineering and Limnology. It would be valuable reading for professionals working in stream ecology, fisheries science and habitat management, environmental consultants and engineers.
