This book was released on 2016 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent release of Building Industry Reporting and Design for Sustainability (BIRDS) v3.0 incorporated the energy, environmental, and cost measurements for 240 000 residential building designs for a 2-story colonial house based on the NIST Net-Zero Energy Residential Test Facility (NZERTF) located in Gaithersburg, MD for study period lengths ranging from 1 year to 40 years. Focusing on a single location allows for consideration of incremental building energy efficiency improvements instead of the suite of energy efficiency requirements specified in the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) as was the focus of the residential database incorporated in BIRDS v2.0. Building design specifications included in the database span the five most recent IECC editions through net-zero energy performance. Additional options not included in previous versions of BIRDS are input alternatives for discount rate, home loan financing, and construction quality for a total of 8 cases. The 240 000 designs across 8 cases (sets of assumptions) and 40 study periods allows for comparisons across over 75 million records to determine the effects of improving building energy efficiency on the overall sustainability performance. The purpose of this study is to utilize similar methodology as that used in prior analysis of BIRDS databases to analyze the BIRDS low-energy residential database. Our analysis will entail making comparisons between a Maryland residential code-compliant design (based on 2015 IECC), serving as our baseline, and a series of alternative designs with varying levels of energy efficiency based on energy, economic, and environmental performance. Findings from this study will shed light on the effects of incremental improvements in residential building energy efficiency, as well as the effects of varying the investor s time horizon and other assumptions, on overall sustainability performance in terms of energy efficiency, life-cycle assessment score coupled with life-cycle cost considerations.

Some documents found on the web are missing some pages or the image quality is so poor, they are difficult to read. We look over each document carefully and replace poor quality images by going back to the original source document. We proof each document to make sure it's all there - including all changes. If you find a good copy, you could print it using a network printer you share with 100 other people (typically its either out of paper or toner). If it's just a 10-page document, no problem, but if it's 250-pages, you will need to punch 3 holes in all those pages and put it in a 3-ring binder. Takes at least an hour. Book excerpt: Building stakeholders need practical metrics, data, and tools to support decisions related to sustainable building designs, technologies, standards, and codes. The Engineering Laboratory of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has addressed this high priority national need by extending its metrics and tools for sustainable building products, known as Building for Environmental and Economic Sustainability (BEES), to whole-buildings. A sustainability measurement system has been developed consisting of whole-building sustainability metrics that are based on innovative extensions to life-cycle assessment (LCA) and life-cycle costing (LCC) approaches involving whole-building energy simulations. The measurement system evaluates the sustainability of both the materials and the energy used by a building over time. It assesses the 0́−carbon footprint0́+ of buildings as well as 11 other environmental performance metrics, and integrates economic performance metrics to yield science-based measures of the business case for investment choices in high-performance green buildings. Building Industry Reporting and Design for Sustainability (BIRDS) applies the sustainability measurement system to an extensive whole-building performance database NIST has compiled for this purpose. Based on the NIST Net-Zero Energy Residential Test Facility (NZERTF), the BIRDS Low-Energy Residential building database includes energy, environmental, and cost measurements for 480 000 design variations of the NZERTF for Gaithersburg, MD for study period lengths ranging from 1 year to 40 years. Focusing on a single location allows for the consideration of incremental building energy efficiency measures, both those specified in the most recent International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) as well as those adopted in the NZERTF design that lead to net-zero energy performance for a one-year period of experimental operation. The sustainability performance of buildings designed to meet current energy codes can be compared to a number of alternative building designs to determine the impacts of improving building energy efficiency on overall sustainability performance. This report describes the latest version of BIRDS (v3.1) including new features, namely metrics related to indoor environmental quality (thermal comfort of occupants and indoor air quality) and an additional exterior wall finish option. In addition to the expansion of the BIRDS low-energy residential database, the BIRDS interface includes extended results graphing capabilities.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building stakeholders need practical metrics, data, and tools to support decisions related to sustainable building designs, technologies, standards, and codes. The Engineering Laboratory of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has addressed this high priority national need by extending its metrics and tools for sustainable building products, known as Building for Environmental and Economic Sustainability (BEES), to whole-buildings through its Building Industry Reporting and Design for Sustainability (BIRDS) framework. The BIRDS framework is a sustainability measurement system consisting of whole-building sustainability metrics that are based on innovative extensions to life-cycle assessment (LCA) and life-cycle costing (LCC) approaches involving whole-building energy simulations. The measurement system evaluates the sustainability of both the materials and the energy used by a building over time. It assesses the 'carbon footprint' of buildings as well as 11 other environmental performance metrics, and integrates economic performance metrics to yield science based measures of the business case for investment choices in high-performance green buildings. The BIRDS framework has been leveraged to assist building architects and designers to evaluate the sustainability performance of custom building designs through the development of BIRDS NEST (Neutral Environment Software Tool), an application programming interface (API) that allows other software tools to submit building characteristics and performance information (in a standardized format) to develop sustainability performance metrics for a customized building design. The beta version of BIRDS NEST is focused on performing a life-cycle environmental impact assessment (LCIA) based on 12 impact categories for single-family residential buildings. The BIRDS NEST has been designed to interact with NREL's OpenStudio (OS), an open-source, cross-platform collection of software tools that supports whole building energy modeling using EnergyPlus. In collaboration with NREL's OS Team, an OS Measure has been developed to successfully send and receive information to and from BIRDS NEST, allowing OS users to develop LCIA estimates for OS building models without leaving the OS application. This technical manual describes BIRDS and its LCA and LCIA methodology and data, development of BIRDS NEST and the associated OS Measure, and BIRDS NEST's limitations, planned release, and the development of its future capabilities.

Book excerpt: Climate change is one of the most challenging problems for the world, which leads researchers to study on the decrease of its impact to the environment at several disciplines. One of the most adverse effects on environment can be observed in transportation area. Hence, in this paper, the impact of bridge maintenance on the environment is inquired in the bridge maintenance prioritization perspective. The aim of this paper is to rank the bridge maintenance projects using type-2 neutrosophic number (T2NN) based fuzzy WASPAS (Weighted Aggregated Sum Product Assessment) and TOPSIS (Technique For Order Preference By Similarity To An Ideal Solution) to test five alternative bridges, where a critical environmental criterion is introduced in this model, which addresses to additional CO2 emission because of truck detours in the event of a bridge closures. The applicability of the proposed model is demonstrated in a case study in Turkey. The evaluation findings show that the ranking results are robust and the CO2 emission criterion is found to be the dominant criterion in the multicriteria decision-making model proposed in this paper.

Book excerpt: This directory--the first annual compilation of agriculture-related solar energy research--is designed to provide the scientist, technician, and inventor; government and industry; and farmers and other interest laymen with an overview of the diverse and intense efforts being mounted by our society to find alternate energy sources.
