Book excerpt: NASA CONNECT is a standards-based, integrated mathematics, science, and technology series of 30-minute instructional distance learning (satellite and television) programs for students in grades 5-8. Each of the five programs in the 1998-1999 NASA CONNECT series included a lesson, an educator guide, a student activity or experiment, and a web-based component. In March 1999, a mail (self-reported) survey (booklet) was sent to a randomly selected sample of 1,000 NASA CONNECT registrants. A total of 401 surveys (351 usable) were received by the established cut-off date. Most survey questions employed a 5-point Likert-type response scale. Survey topics included: (1) instructional technology and teaching, (2) instructional programming and technology in the classroom, (3) the NASA CONNECT program, (4) classroom use of computer technology, and (5) demographics. About 68% of the respondents were female, about 88% identified "classroom teacher" as their present professional duty, about 75% worked in a public school, and about 67% held a master's degree or master's equivalency. Regarding NASA CONNECT, respondents reported that: (1) they used the five programs in the 1998-1999 NASA CONNECT series; (2) the stated objectives for each program were met (4.49); (3) the programs were aligned with the national mathematics, science, and technology standards (4.61); (4) program content was developmentally appropriate for grade level (4.25); and (5) the programs in the 1998-1999 NASA CONNECT series enhanced/enriched the teaching of mathematics, science, and technology (4.45).Pinelli, Thomas E. and Frank, Kari Lou and House, Patricia L.Langley Research CenterTELEVISION SYSTEMS; COMPUTER SYSTEMS DESIGN; COMPUTER PROGRAMS; EDUCATION; EQUIVALENCE; FEMALES; RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT; SCHOOLS; STUDENTS; SURVEYS; TECHNOLOGIES

Book excerpt: Each new generation of commercial aircraft produces less noise and fewer emissions per passenger-kilometer (or ton-kilometer of cargo) than the previous generation. However, the demand for air transportation services grows so quickly that total aircraft noise and emissions continue to increase. Meanwhile, federal, state, and local noise and air quality standards in the United States and overseas have become more stringent. It is becoming more difficult to reconcile public demand for inexpensive, easily accessible air transportation services with concurrent desires to reduce noise, improve local air quality, and protect the global environment against climate change and depletion of stratospheric ozone. This situation calls for federal leadership and strong action from industry and government. U.S. government, industry, and universities conduct research and develop technology that could help reduce aircraft noise and emissions-but only if the results are used to improve operational systems or standards. For example, the (now terminated) Advanced Subsonic Technology Program of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) generally brought new technology only to the point where a system, subsystem model, or prototype was demonstrated or could be validated in a relevant environment. Completing the maturation process-by fielding affordable, proven, commercially available systems for installation on new or modified aircraft-was left to industry and generally took place only if industry had an economic or regulatory incentive to make the necessary investment. In response to this situation, the Federal Aviation Administration, NASA, and the Environmental Protection Agency, asked the Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board of the National Research Council to recommend research strategies and approaches that would further efforts to mitigate the environmental effects (i.e., noise and emissions) of aviation. The statement of task required the Committee on Aeronautics Research and Technology for Environmental Compatibility to assess whether existing research policies and programs are likely to foster the technological improvements needed to ensure that environmental constraints do not become a significant barrier to growth of the aviation sector.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ′The aim of this book is to support schools in using the internet effectively. Refreshingly, it has a strong pedagogical focus and emphasises the value of technology to support learning...Overall a useful book that should help schools in thinking about how the internet might enhance teaching and learning′ - Learning & Teaching Update All schools now have internet access, but the potential of internet technology as a teaching and learning tool is still far from fully realised. This timely book helps teachers develop pedagogical skills in using the internet through a series of case studies of good practice, all of which are based on extensive classroom research. Accessible and practical, it is a guidebook on how integrate the use of technology across teaching and learning. The book offers a range of ideas which can be used in different classroom settings. The emphasis is on practical ways of developing skills in teaching and learning, rather than on the technical specifics of the technology itself. Illustrative material - examples of children′s work, website links, and further details of how projects were set up - are presented on a companion website. Chapters include: - The internet and its use in Education - what is the internet and what is its history in schools? - Pedagogy and the Internet - what impact is new technology having on teaching styles? - Learning Theory - past and current perspectives - Teaching with the internet - a series of case studies analysed in terms of pedagogy, learning theory and the effectiveness of the teaching and the learning. - Effective Teaching with the Internet - some guidelines for good practice This book will appeal to teachers in training as well as practising teachers, ICT co-ordinators and those on CPD courses.
Book Synopsis Fostering Visions for the Future by : National Research Council
Download or read book Fostering Visions for the Future written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-11-21 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NASA Institute for Advanced Concepts (NIAC) was formed in 1998 to provide an independent source of advanced aeronautical and space concepts that could dramatically impact how NASA develops and conducts its missions. Until the program's termination in August 2007, NIAC provided an independent open forum, a high-level point of entry to NASA for an external community of innovators, and an external capability for analysis and definition of advanced aeronautics and space concepts to complement the advanced concept activities conducted within NASA. Throughout its 9-year existence, NIAC inspired an atmosphere for innovation that stretched the imagination and encouraged creativity. As requested by Congress, this volume reviews the effectiveness of NIAC and makes recommendations concerning the importance of such a program to NASA and to the nation as a whole, including the proper role of NASA and the federal government in fostering scientific innovation and creativity and in developing advanced concepts for future systems. Key findings and recommendations include that in order to achieve its mission, NASA must have, and is currently lacking, a mechanism to investigate visionary, far-reaching advanced concepts. Therefore, a NIAC-like entity should be reestablished to fill this gap.
