Book excerpt: "In the Face of History brings together 22 photographers whose work is rooted in a sense of time and place, and who collectively map out a century of European experience. Some are caught up in moments of epic conflict, while others reflect subtler currents of social change. Intensely personal chronicles of community, family and love sit alongside, and at times overlap with, documents of historical record. The images range from the trenches of the First World War to the Jewish ghetto of Lodz; from the Paris of Atget, Brassaï and Doisneau to the Berlin of Michael Schmidt and Wolfgang Tillmans; and from cities and suburbs to tiny villages. They document a vast range of experience, but all are distinguished by the photographers' compulsion to record the world as they find it, a world refracted through the prism of their own experience"--Page 4 of cover.

Book excerpt: Welcome to 55 Portraits of Europe. Street Photography. In this photography book, you will find 55 portraits of people living in Europe and in different cities from countries such as Ireland, Portugal, United Kingdom, Poland, Germany, Belgium and France. There are individual portraits and group portraits; portraits of aged people, adults, young adults, and portraits of children; portraits of citizens going about their daily activities; portraits of people working and portraits of people enjoying life in festivals or showing their hobbies. There are even two self-portraits, the first and the last pictures. The pictures are in colour and in black and white. There are happy and sad portraits as well. I have encountered people in financial need and helped them. You will find some of them here, projecting their humanity in a very dignified way. Equally, I have admiration for models that openly show their physical defects unconcerned. It takes a lot of courage and dignity to open a mouth and smile when there are no teeth there. The vast majority of the portraits are spontaneous ones. I happened to be there, walking on the street, and I asked the portraited person if I could take a picture of her. I am therefore very grateful to the photographed models for their patience and generosity. I am fascinated by the way we humans project ourselves into the public eye, the clothes we choose to wear, the statements made with the way we appear in public spaces. You will find some of this fascination here.I try to present models under the best possible light and I frame the pictures accordingly to obtain the best of the models. Also, the pictures are presented in a way that they interact with each other, in as much as this is possible or imaginable.Taking these pictures was an immense pleasure and I hope that the viewers will appreciate the value of the models in posing for the camera. One final reflection. What would be a photographer without a good model, a good light and a good frame?.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As one of the first books to treat portraits of early modern women as a discrete subject, this volume considers the possibilities and limits of agency and identity for women in history and, with particular attention to gender, as categories of analysis for women's images. Its nine original essays on Italy, the Low Countries, Germany, France, and England deepen the usefulness of these analytical tools for portraiture. Among the book's broad contributions: it dispels false assumptions about agency's possibilities and limits, showing how agency can be located outside of conventional understanding, and, conversely, how it can be stretched too far. It demonstrates that agency is compatible with relational gender analysis, especially when alternative agencies such as spectatorship are taken into account. It also makes evident the importance of aesthetics for the study of identity and agency. The individual essays reveal, among other things, how portraits broadened the traditional parameters of portraiture, explored transvestism and same-sex eroticism, appropriated aspects of male portraiture to claim those values for their sitters, and, as sites for gender negotiation, resistance, and debate, invoked considerable relational anxiety. Richly layered in method, the book offers an array of provocative insights into its subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past hundred years of Europe are distilled in the experiences of the citizens of Strasbourg. From the turn of the twentieth century until 1945, Europe's ruling idea of nationalism rendered Strasbourg/Straßburg the prize in a tug-of-war between the two greatest continental powers, France and Germany. Then, in the immediate post-war period, ideals for European unity set up various European institutions, some headquartered in Strasbourg, which have gradually created a partially supranational Europe. At the end of the 1950s, a third theme arises: the large-scale settling in Strasbourg and other such richer, western European cities of persons from poorer lands, frequently ex-colonial territories, whose appearance and cultural practices render them essentially "different" to local eyes: expressions of racism thereby jostle with professions of multiculturalism. Now in the globalisation era, the issue of "immigration" has broadened yet further into transnationalism: the experience of persons who are embedded in varying manner in both Strasbourg and in their land of origin. Based on in-depth, lively interviews with 80 men and 80 women ranging from 101 to 20 years, and from all over the world (France, Germany, Alsace-Lorraine, Portugal, Italy, ex-Yugoslavia, Albania, Algeria, Morocco, Turkey, Cameroon, and Afghanistan amongst other countries), the author draws out of these compelling testimonies all sorts of compelling insights into issues of identity, race, nationality, culture, politics, heritage and representation, giving a unique and valuable view of what it means (and has meant over the past century) to be a European.

Book excerpt: The first full-scale study of the face in contemporary photography: a challenge to accepted notions of what constitutes a portrait. In this groundbreaking publication, William A. Ewing announces the death of the conventional portrait. In an age when we are bombarded with flawless images of youthful beauty, when rejuvenation is available through a jar of cream or a scalpel, artists and photographers seek to portray the face in new ways. Through a variety of techniques, including computer manipulation, photomontage, and retouching, the artists present their new portraits. They replace clarity with blur, the split-second with the elastic moment, reality with hyperreality, questioning the notion of a fixed identity, of universality of expression, of what constitutes beauty. Whether Cindy Sherman's disquieting disguises, Gillian Wearing's masked self-portrait, LawickMü ller's composite portraits of couples, Thomas Ruff's studiously neutral facade, or Orlan's disturbing experiments with cosmetic surgery, these faces demand attention. Other artists represented in the book include Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, Martin Parr, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Rineke Dijkstra, Lee Friedlander, Barbara Kruger, and Tibor Kalman. 250+ photographs in color and duotone.\
