Book excerpt: Despite various payment innovations, today, cash is still heavily used to pay for low-value purchases. This paper proposes a simulation model based on two optimal cash management and payment policies in the payments economics literature to explain cash usage. First, cash is preferred to other payment instruments whenever consumers have enough balances at hand. Second, it is optimal for consumers to hold a stock of cash for precautionary reasons. Exploiting survey payment diaries from Canada, France, Germany and the Netherlands, the results of the simulations show that both optimal policies are well suited to understand the high shares of low-value cash payments in Canada, France and Germany. Yet, they do not perform as well in the case of the Netherlands, overestimating the share of low-value cash payments. We discuss how the differences in payment markets across countries may explain the limitations of the two optimal policies.

Book excerpt: The 2008 global financial crisis and the concurrent rise of the platform economy have had profound effects on the banking sector. Over the past decade and a half, banking leaders have had to contend with rapidly evolving regulatory, technological, and competitive forces. The pace of technological change has been formidable with advances in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and blockchain technology. These forces have brought to the forefront new managerial imperatives that banking leaders have to make sense of as they strategise in light of these unfolding new realities. Banking in the Age of the Platform Economy explores the strategies that managers and leaders at banks and other financial institutions have adopted in response to the rise of the platform economy, the new forces of interdependence that it entails, and the risks/opportunities involved in cocreating value with external stakeholders. With its discussion of the strategies of interdependence and value cocreation that the top twenty banks in Europe adopted between 2008 and 2019, this book is essential reading for academics, banking and fintech professionals, and management consultants that advise banks and fintechs.

This book was released on 2005-09-12 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reinhard H. Schmidt The impressive development of the finance literature with its emphasis on asset pricing and the formal modeling of incentive systems during the past three decades, has largely relegated the business and operational aspects of banking as an industry from the agenda of academic research. Though this is understandable, it is especially regrettable in view of the dynamic dev- opments in the banking industry which have started about a decade ago and are currently in full swing. Fortunately, there are now signs of a change to the effect that banking is back on the research agenda. The p- sent book by Professor De Laurentis and his co-authors is a highly inno- tive and interesting manifestation of this reorientation. Banking is an important part of any financial system, and it is especially important in the financial systems of the countries of Continental Europe, such as Italy, France, and Germany, which have been bank-based for d- ades and which are, in my view, likely to remain bank-based for the fo- seeable future. There are many reasons, based on empirical and theoretical considerations, to believe that strong banks are not only important for the banking industry itself, but also for the respective national economies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written on the financial crisis of 2008 – the most severe economic downturn since the Great Depression – analysing its causes and the risks for the future of the global economy. This book takes an alternative approach which focuses on the legacy of the global financial crisis, what is remembered and what lessons have been drawn from it. This volume provides perspectives on this legacy from a variety of contributors including central bankers, regulators, politicians, academics, and journalists. They offer insight into what remains of the crisis in terms of public and industry awareness, changes to the post-2008 financial architecture, lessons from the national experiences of highly exposed small economies, and considers this legacy in terms of oversight by regulatory regimes. These diverse perspectives are drawn together here to ask how we can ensure that these lessons will be transmitted to the new generation of global financiers.
