Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: Based on the findings of the correlation analysis described in chapter 7.1, factors of influence and variables statistically not related to financial B2C e-commerce can now be distinguished. While the focus of this part of the analysis lies on factors showing significant correlation coefficients in relation to the research topic, this does not mean that the non-correlated factors are not of importance or somewhat connected. The statistical measurements may not be suitable for this type of analysis, survey results may be misleading or the situation will have changed in the last two years after the investigation. On the other hand, the observed correlations do not necessarily equal a causal relationship and the high complex matter can not be explained by single variables as influence factors. The conducted correlation analysis only serves as an indicator for potential influence factors or accelerators and has to be carefully evaluated. Keeping these considerations in mind, the statistical analysis within the scope of this masters dissertation will support the following conclusions and interpretations. First of all, computer usage and skills as well as internet usage and skills need to be on a high level in a country to facilitate financial B2C e-commerce. Residents of countries with higher levels for the subject of examination will probably already have gained adequate skills, as indicated by a medium strong negative relation to computer courses taken in the last three months and other online activities such as online information search and online banking positively correlated. While online banking is partially included in the variable e_comm representing financial B2C e-commerce through customer s usage of online financial services, this particular result may not be totally conclusive. However, it seems logical that consumers with good computer and internet skills also spending a lot of time with advanced activities on the internet may also engage in financial B2C e-commerce. This assumption narrows down the target group and excludes a certain clientele from online product offers of financial institutions - banks will need to adapt their web portals accordingly, set up initiatives improving computer and web skills of their consumers and meet their consumers on the internet, e.g. with advertising while they are using search engines. Practical evidence supporting these interpretations can be found in several examples of [...]

Book excerpt: This collection of essays by well known specialists in e-commerce and Internet law, drawn from both academe and practice, analyses recent crucial legislation which has created, for the first time, a legal regime governing European electronic commerce. The central focus is on the European Electronic Commerce Directive and its implementation in the UK since August 2002. The E-Commerce Directive develops a distinctive European strategy for regulating and promoting on-line business and the information society. Areas of the Directive analysed include contracting on-line, Internet service provider liability, consumer privacy including spam and 'cookies', country of origin regulation, and on-line alternative dispute resolution (ODR). Further chapters move beyond the Directive to discuss other important new laws in this domain, including the Privacy and Electronic Communications Directive, the Distance Selling Directives, the Electronic Money Directive, the Lawful Business regulations on employee surveillance, the disability discrimination rules affecting websites and the extension of VAT to on-line transactions. Both the European framework and the rules as implemented in the UK are examined and critiqued for how well they meet the needs of business and consumers.

Book excerpt: The technological developments in the area of cyberspace have transformed e-commerce in many nations and their internet economies in the past few decades. The advances in these technologies coupled with the mushrooming of Cyberspace frauds by internet hackers and crackers have ensued in a very complicated problem for both developed and developing nations. The internet economy, being a recent development in many countries of the world, has not yet grown to its fullest measure. However, multiplicities of threats including the infringement of cyber security policies, cyber crimes, and other online business frauds have come to be the chief hitches that impede the development of e-commerce in general and the internet economy in particular. Cross-Border E-commerce underlies the increasing trends of internet economies in different countries including both the developed and developing countries. The boosting of these internet economies through cross-border e-commerce have attracted the attentions of many improper online embezzlers who always strive to industrialize the underground internet economies gained through online business frauds, cyber crimes and so many other improper online business transactions. Lots of efforts have been exerted by many countries, the major ones being the US and the UK, to halt the threats of business frauds in e-commerce and cyberspace insecurity which would otherwise jeopardize both small scale and large scale online businesses in these countries. Besides, many intergovernmental organizations including the United Nations (UN), the European Union (EU), the African Union (AU), the Organization of American States(OAS), Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development(OECD) and United Nations Commission for Trade And Development(UNCTAD) and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa(UNECA), just to name few, have began the work of comprehensively studying the threats targeted at the development of e-commerce and related cybercrimes. In fact, the US and the EU have been praised to have done a pioneering work of regulating the legal atmosphere of cross-border e-commerce to make an effective cross-border e-commerce possible. Cross-border e-commerce has been a very recent and infant development in Ethiopia. Ethiopia does not have an orchestrated system for regulating cross-border e-commerce. This work explores the experiences of the EU and other International Organizations in regulating cross-border e-commerce and recommends Ethiopia to draw workable lessons particularly from the EU experiences to buttress the current efforts to design the legal architecture for an effective cross-border e-commerce in the country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European payment market has undergone rapid transformation in recent years due to changes in payment habits, new business rules and new legal frameworks and regulation. There has also been an advent of new technologies and payment solutions which has altered the European payments landscape drastically. This book provides an overview of the fundamental issues involved in this new payments landscape. The authors discuss fundamental problems such as substitution between cash and non-cash payment instruments, payment costs, the economics of fees, and the demand for cash and deposit money. They also analyse issues such as two-sided markets, business platforms and the problem of critical mass. Other chapters focus on new phenomena in payments such as mobile payments, multi-sided platforms, electronic wallets, virtual currencies, decentralised ledgers, private digital currencies, blockchain and instant payments. The authors also review existing regulation for the topic including the revised Payment Services Directive (PSD2), Interchange Fee Regulation (IF/MIF Reg), and the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) project. Transforming Payment Systems in Europe offers insight into changing payment culture and the ways in which new payment systems can create a single digital market to foster further integration in Europe.

Book excerpt: Digital technologies not only offer a vast potential to enhance firm productivity, they can also help enhance resilience and support economic recovery in times of war. The government has made significant strides in accelerating the digital transformation and has reinforced support for digitalisation since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. While digital technologies have brought significant benefits to the country, Ukraine’s SMEs are yet to fully tap into the potential of digitalisation. Beyond war-related challenges, lack of awareness, digital skills shortages, sectoral specificities, and financial constraints complicate their digital development. The government aims to further promote SME digitalisation and is currently preparing its SME Strategy 2024-27. Throughout 2023, the OECD provided guidance to Ukraine on how to help SMEs leverage digitalisation for productivity, resilience, and recovery. This report presents an overview of the findings, looking at i) ways to strengthen the national and subnational institutional and policy framework for SME digitalisation; ii) avenues for targeted digitalisation support services for SMEs, building on the OECD’s blueprint; and iii) specific ways digitalisation can help SMEs weather war-related challenges.
