Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprises a national study of the explosives industry and provides a framework for identification of its industrial archaeology and social history. Few monuments of gunpowder manufacture survive in Britain from the Middle Ages, although its existence is documented. Late 17th-century water-powered works are identifiable but sparse. In the later 18th century, however, the industry was transformed by state acquisition of key factories, notably at Faversham and at Waltham Abbey. In the mid-19th century developments in Britain paralleled those in continental Europe and in America, namely a shift to production on an industrial scale related to advances in armaments technology. The urgency and large-scale demands of the two world wars brought state-directed or state-led solutions to explosives production in the 20th century. Yhe book’s concluding section looks at planning, preservation, conservation and presentation in relation to prospective future uses of these sites.

Book excerpt: Restaging the Past is the first edited collection devoted to the study of historical pageants in Britain, ranging from their Edwardian origins to the present day. Across Britain in the twentieth century, people succumbed to ‘pageant fever’. Thousands dressed up in historical costumes and performed scenes from the history of the places where they lived, and hundreds of thousands more watched them. These pageants were one of the most significant aspects of popular engagement with the past between the 1900s and the 1970s: they took place in large cities, small towns and tiny villages, and engaged a whole range of different organised groups, including Women’s Institutes, political parties, schools, churches and youth organisations. Pageants were community events, bringing large numbers of people together in a shared celebration and performance of the past; they also involved many prominent novelists, professional historians and other writers, as well as featuring repeatedly in popular and highbrow literature. Although the pageant tradition has largely died out, it deserves to be acknowledged as a key aspect of community history during a period of great social and political change. Indeed, as this book shows, some traces of ‘pageant fever’ remain in evidence today.

Book excerpt: Sir Ernest George (1839-1922) was one of England's greatest architects of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He specialised in domestic work and was responsible for beautiful and imaginative houses in both town and country, and with his three successive partners, he carried out over 200 works both in Britain and abroad. He was also a watercolourist of considerable stature whose work in the medium was acclaimed in his own time. This richly illustrated book is the first study of the man and his work and will establish him as one of the major names in his profession. His life and career is fully documented, the buildings are described and a full catalogue of works is provided. A special feature is a study of pupils and assistants who passed through George's office, including several who went on to be famous and successful - Edwin Lutyens, Guy Dawber, J. J. Joass, R. Weir Schultz - and also the first woman to be become a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects, Ethel Mary Charles. Hilary Grainger is a dean at the London College of Fashion and is the recognised expert on George and his architecture. She is also a leading authority on the architecture of cremation and is the chair of the Victorian Society.

Book excerpt: This book" "tells the story of George Cole's more than 70 years in the acting profession that began with a walk-on part at the age of 14 in the stage musical "The White Horse Inn "in 1939, and continues today, having included such roles as David Bliss in the radio and television versions of "A Life of Bliss," Flash Harry in the "St. Trinian's "films, and Arthur Daley in television's "Minder." Adopted when he was only 10 days old, George Cole grew up in south London in the 1920s. On the day he left school he saw a newspaper advertisement seeking a small boy to join the cast of "The White Horse Inn "and was selected the following day. A year later, he found himself in the West End play "Cottage to Let," ""playing an impish wartime evacuee. Here he met legendary comic actor Alastair Sim who, with his wife, took him as an evacuee to their country house and coached him in the finer skills of acting. A flurry of films and theater performances in the late 1940s, after his RAF service, culminated in a memorable role as a young Ebenezer Scrooge in the classic 1951 film "Scrooge "alongside Sim. "Henry V," "Cleopatra "(with Elizabeth Taylor), "Don't Forget to Write," "Blott on the Landscape," "Henry Root," and "Dad "are among other titles for which he is well known. But it was in 1979 that he landed the role that would elevate him to international recognition, when he was offered the role of Arthur Daley in Thames Television's new series "Minder," ""alongside Dennis Waterman. In "The World was my Lobster," a title taken from a classic line in a "Minder "episode, George Cole talks candidly, humorously, and sensitively about his adoption, his life, his roles, and many of the people he has worked with throughout his long career.

Book excerpt: This catalogue was compiled to compliment one of Patrimonju's most prestigious exhibitions, Silver of Malta. The nine hundred and ninety-five entries consist of silver items created by Maltese and foreign silversmiths that settled in Malta, ranging from mid 16th Century till the 19th Century. These objets d'art commissioned by the Maltese, the Knights and also by the British residents, became highly collectable items of exceptional craftsmanship of an international standard. The wide variety of exhibits included silver for banqueting and tea tables, the famous oil lamps (lampieri), glove trays (guantieri), salvers (sootocoppe), scent flasks (Balsamini), snuff-boxes, jewelry and several others. Religious silver was also exhibited but restricted to items used in the house or house chapel. The catalogue is forwarded by a synoptic essay on the Influence of European Silver on the Maltese Art of Silversmithing, and includes an exhaustive Glossary and an illustrated section to the Makers' Marks of all the recorded silversmiths producing silver in Malta. Alaine Apap Bologna is an art historian and connoisseur, who specialised in silver and objets d'art at Christie's Geneva becoming the head of the silver and watch departments.
