Book Synopsis Parental Life Courses after Separation and Divorce in Europe by : Michaela Kreyenfeld
Download or read book Parental Life Courses after Separation and Divorce in Europe written by Michaela Kreyenfeld and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-02 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book assembles landmark studies on divorce and separation in European countries, and how this affects the life of parents and children. It focuses on four major areas of post-separation lives, namely (1) economic conditions, (2) parent-child relationships, (3) parent and child well-being, and (4) health. Through studies from several European countries, the book showcases how legal regulations and social policies influence parental and child well-being after divorce and separation. It also illustrates how social policies are interwoven with the normative fabric of a country. For example, it is shown that father-child contact after separation is more intense in those countries which have adopted policies that encourage shared parenting. Correspondingly, countries that have adopted these regulations are at the forefront of more egalitarian gender role attitudes. Apart from a strong emphasis on the legal and social policy context, the studies in this volume adopt a longitudinal perspective and situate post-separation behaviour and well-being in the life course. The longitudinal perspective opens up new avenues for research to understand how behaviour and conditions prior or at divorce and separation affect later behaviour and well-being. As such this book is of special appeal to scholars of family research as well as to anyone interested in the role of divorce and separation in Europe in the 21st century.
Book Synopsis Childhood and Children's Books in Early Modern Europe, 1550-1800 by : Andrea Immel
Download or read book Childhood and Children's Books in Early Modern Europe, 1550-1800 written by Andrea Immel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of 14 original essays by historians and literary scholars explores childhood and children's books in Early Modern Europe, 1550-1800. The collection aims to reposition childhood as a compelling presence in early modern imagination--a ready emblem of innocence, mischief, and playfulness. The essays offer a wide-ranging basis for reconceptualizing the development of a separate literature for children as central to evolving early modern concepts of human development and socialization. Among the topics covered are constructs of literacy as revealed by the figure of Goody Two Shoes, notions of pedagogy and academic standards, a reception study of children's reading based on book purchases made by Rugby school boys in the late eighteenth-century, an analysis of the first international best-seller for children, the abbe Pluche's Spectacle de la nature, and the commodification of child performers in Jacobean comedies.

Book Synopsis The Social Meaning of Children and Fertility Change in Europe by : Anne Lise Ellingsaeter
Download or read book The Social Meaning of Children and Fertility Change in Europe written by Anne Lise Ellingsaeter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low fertility in Europe has given rise to the notion of a ‘fertility crisis’. This book shifts the attention from fertility decline to why people do have children, asking what children mean to them. It investigates what role children play in how young adults plan their lives, and why and how young adults make the choices they do. The book aims to expand our comprehension of the complex structures and cultures that influence reproductive choice, and explores three key aspects of fertility choices: the processes towards having (or not having) children, and how they are underpinned by negotiations and ambivalences how family policies, labour markets and personal relations interact in young adults’ fertility choices social differentiation in fertility choice: how fertility rationales and reasoning may differ among women and men, and across social classes Based on empirical studies from six nations – France, Scandinavia, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Germany and Italy (representing the high and low end of European variation in fertility rates) – the book shows how different economic, political and cultural contexts interact in young adults' fertility rationales. It will be of interest to students and scholars of sociology, anthropology, demography and gender studies.

Book Synopsis Children's Lives in Southern Europe by : Lourdes Gaitán
Download or read book Children's Lives in Southern Europe written by Lourdes Gaitán and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2020-02-28 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary book provides a sociological view of the contemporary experiences of children in Southern Europe. Focusing on regions deeply affected by the 2008 economic crisis, it offers a detailed investigation into the impact of economic downturn and austerity on the lives of children. Established childhood studies and sociology researchers unpack recent changes in the quality of children's lives and our understanding of children's rights in the modern world. Focusing first on contemporary changes to children's forms of living, the book then turns to the prevalence of poverty in Southern Europe, before scrutinising the experiences of migrant and highly mobile children. Illustrating these experiences with key case studies from across Southern Europe, this book presents a powerful critique of the promises and pitfalls of structural changes to children-centred public policy. This informative book is essential reading for academics and higher-level students of childhood studies. Policy makers and practitioners in education, law, health, social services and children's rights organizations in need of strong, empirical research into childhood experiences will appreciate the thorough case studies analysed in the book.
