Book excerpt: More than 25 years after the fall of the Soviet Union, European integration remains a work in progress, especially in those Eastern European nations most dramatically reshaped by democratization and economic liberalization. This volume assembles detailed, empirically grounded studies of eleven states—Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovenia, and the former East Germany—that went on to join the European Union. Each chapter analyzes the political, economic, and social transformations that have taken place in these nations, using a comparative approach to identify structural similarities and assess outcomes relative to one another as well as the rest of the EU.

Chapters cover the governance of trade in services at the European and global level; studies on the recent Services Directive and how this interacts with the principle of managed mutual recognition and harmonization in different sectors of trade in services (social services, financial services); the recent case law of the European Courts on the enforcement of the principle of free movement of services and how this accommodates various national public interest concerns; and the interaction of the freedom to provide services with fundamental rights, including social rights. The operation of the principle of managed mutual recognition in other economic integration regimes, in particular in the context of the WTO, is also discussed.
Book Synopsis Openness and Development by : Franz P. Lang
Download or read book Openness and Development written by Franz P. Lang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Openness and development are key words of central importance in describing the dynamism within the present world economy. Openness denotes the entire process of internationalization and liberalization now underway in the commodity markets, factor markets and financial mar kets. Today there is hardly anational economy or company left which can afIord to ignore international dependencies. In the broadest sense of the word, development encompasses an those dynamic endogenous economic processes which create prosperity and a high standard of living via inno vation and structural change. Modem economic research has shown that both of these fields of economic causalities - which are themselves afIected by a wide variety of interdependencies - detennine the economic destiny of the national economies and of their actors in the industrial, newly industrializing, transitional and developing countries. The present volume focuses on the significance of these two key words while conveying, at the same time, an impression of the broad spectrum of related issues. It contains papers written by economists working at uni versities and research institutes as well as papers submitted by "economic practitioners"; the latter, in particular, provide valuable insights on current issues by taking account of theoretical and practical considerations. Whereas the papers printed in Part I analyze their subjects from a general perspective, the emphasis in Part TI is on specific regional aspects. Part I begins with a theoretical-empirical study on the development of foreign trade.

Book Synopsis Globalisierung - Herausforderung an die Wirtschaftspolitik by : Renate Ohr
Download or read book Globalisierung - Herausforderung an die Wirtschaftspolitik written by Renate Ohr and published by Duncker & Humblot. This book was released on 2004 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Evolution and Design of Institutions by : Christian Schubert
Download or read book Evolution and Design of Institutions written by Christian Schubert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-09-27 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprises nine papers approaching designed institutions and their interplay with spontaneous institutions from various angles. While the evolution of spontaneous institutions is quite well understood in economic thinking, the development of consciously designed institutions has been examined much less. In new institutional economics, public choice, and law and economics the interaction between changing preferences and spontaneously evolving institutions on the one hand and the evolution of designed institutions (as, e.g., legal systems) on the other hand has largely been ignored. A number of top class international contributors have been assembled to study this phenomenon including Viktor Vanberg, Bruno Frey, Elinor Ostrom and Francesco Parisi.

Book Synopsis Party Autonomy and the Role of Information in the Internal Market by : Stefan Grundmann
Download or read book Party Autonomy and the Role of Information in the Internal Market written by Stefan Grundmann and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2001 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examination of Party Autonomy and its limits has always raised fundamental questions in national contract and private law. The concentration on information solutions which enhance and leave more space to party autonomy is a fundamentally new approach to this core issue and is typical of Community legislation. The complexity of the question made it advisable to have the different aspects treated and discussed by specialists in different areas: by legal scholars and economists, by EC law and by contract law specialists, by scholars from different jurisdictions with different regulatory approaches and backgrounds. The four parts deal with (1) the economic and constitutionell foundations of the question, with (2) the framework to be found in EC treaty law, with (3) the fundamental and more general aspects relating to substantive EC contract law legislation, and with (4) the most important individual legal measures. The book covers both general contract law (with consumer contracts) and labour contract law.
