Book excerpt: Farm structures in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) today cover a whole spectrum of forms, which include small subsistence-oriented household plots, medium-sized commercial family farms, and large corporations. The agricultural sector in CEE definitely has not embraced the family farm as the dominant farming structure, thus confounding the original expectations of Western experts. On the other hand, agriculture did not collapse because of fragmentation and privatization, as predicted by conservative doomsayers. To address the concerns of the farming sector in CEE with relation to EU accession, a workshop was held in Warsaw, Poland in June 1999. This volume represents a selection of papers presented at this workshop. It examines the reforms and policy changes necessary in the food and agriculture sectors of the ten countries that have started the accession process for eventual membership in the European Union (Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia). The papers are organized around the following three topics: • Evolving farm structures and competitiveness in agriculture; • Land laws and legal institutions for development of land markets and farm restructuring; and • Development of farm services for improved competitiveness. This volume will be of interest to agricultural policy makers and government officials in the candidate countries, EU officials, World Bank and FAO staff, development scholars, and all others interested in the process of agricultural reform in CEE.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Embedded microprocessor systems are affecting our daily lives at a fast pace, mostly unrecognised by the general public. Most of us are aware of the part they are playing in increasing business efficiency through office applications such as personal computers, printers and copiers. Only a few people, however, fully appreciate the growing role of embedded systems in telecommunications and industrial environments, or even in everyday products like cars and home appliances. The challenge to engineers and managers is not only highlighted by the sheer size of the market, ' 1.5 billion microcontrollers and microprocessors are produced every year ' but also by the accelerating innovation in embedded systems towards higher complexity in hardware, software and tools as well as towards higher performance and lower consumption. To maintain competitiveness in this demanding environment, an optimum mix of innovation, time to market and system cost is required. Choosing the right options and strategies for products and companies is crucial and rarely obvious. In this book the editors have, therefore, skilfully brought together more than fifty contributions from some of the leading authorities in embedded systems. The papers are conveniently grouped in four sections.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book analyses the concept and conditions of transnational solidarity, its challenges and opportunities, drawing on diverse disciplines as Law, Political Science, Sociology, Philosophy, Psychology and History. In the contemporary world, we see two major opposing trends. The first involves nationalistic and populistic movements. Transnational solidarity has been under pressure for a decade because of, among others, global economic and migration crises, leading to populistic and authoritarian leadership in some European countries, the United States and Brazil. Countries withdraw from international commitments on climate, trade and refugees and the European Union struggles with Brexit. The second trend, partly a reaction to the first, is a strengthened transnational grass-root community – a cosmopolitan movement – which protests primarily against climate change. Based on interdisciplinary reflections on the concept of transnational solidarity, its challenges and opportunities are analysed, drawing on Europe as a focal case study for a broader, global perspective.

Park and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-07-21 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of the International Conference on Human-centric Computing and Embedded and Multimedia Computing (HumanCom & EMC 2011) will cover topics of HumanCom and EMC, the current hot topics satisfying the world-wide ever-changing needs. Human-centric computing is to create novel solutions so that the humans are always connected, portable, and available. As with pervasive-computing, human-centric computing requires a variety of devices; however, such devices exist simply to obtain inputs from the human and are embedded in objects that humans interact with on a daily basis. Moreover, during the past couple of decades, Information Science technologies influenced and changed every aspect of our lives and our cultures. Without various Information Science technology-based applications, it would be difficult to keep information stored securely, to process information efficiently, and to communicate conveniently. Embedded computing ranges from portable devices such as digital watches and MP3 players, to large stationary installations like traffic lights, factory controllers, or the systems controlling nuclear power plants. Complexity varies from low, with a single microcontroller chip, to very high with multiple units, peripherals and networks mounted inside a large chassis or enclosure. Multimedia computing covers multimedia I/O devices, OS, storage systems, streaming media middleware, continuous media representations, media coding, media processing, etc., and also includes multimedia communications; real-time protocols, end-to-end streaming media, resource allocation, multicast protocols, and multimedia applications; databases, distributed collaboration, video conferencing, 3D virtual environments.

This book was released on 2022-10-21 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the recent global pandemic, educators of science and technology have had to pivot and adapt their delivery to create alternative virtual means of delivery. The COVID-19 pandemic has influenced a rapid change in teaching and learning in higher education. It is reshaping curriculum demands, the 21st century digital competence challenges, and learning technologies. These changes in education are likely to endure well past the COVID-19 pandemic, making it crucial for educators to consider teaching and learning under the perspectives of digital education and innovation. Advancing STEM Education and Innovation in a Time of Distance Learning highlights the contemporary trends and challenges in science, technology, mathematics, and engineering education. The chapters present findings and discussions of relevant research studies and theoretical frameworks for the provision of science, technology, engineering, and technical subjects. It not only presents successful practice examples from before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, but also provides useful information to assist educators in understanding the demands and challenges of digital education. Covering topics such as ethnically diverse students, foreign language learning, and mobile gamification, this premier reference source is an essential resource for educators and administrators of both K-12 and higher education, pre-service teachers, teacher educators, librarians, government officials, researchers, and academicians.
