Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building upon the wide-ranging success of the first edition, Parallel Scientific Computation presents a single unified approach to using a range of parallel computers, from a small desktop computer to a massively parallel computer. The author explains how to use the bulk synchronous parallel (BSP) model to design and implement parallel algorithms in the areas of scientific computing and big data, and provides a full treatment of core problems in these areas, starting from a high-level problem description, via a sequential solution algorithm to a parallel solution algorithm and an actual parallel program written in BSPlib. Every chapter of the book contains a theoretical section and a practical section presenting a parallel program and numerical experiments on a modern parallel computer to put the theoretical predictions and cost analysis to the test. Every chapter also presents extensive bibliographical notes with additional discussions and pointers to relevant literature, and numerous exercises which are suitable as graduate student projects. The second edition provides new material relevant for big-data science such as sorting and graph algorithms, and it provides a BSP approach towards new hardware developments such as hierarchical architectures with both shared and distributed memory. A single, simple hybrid BSP system suffices to handle both types of parallelism efficiently, and there is no need to master two systems, as often happens in alternative approaches. Furthermore, the second edition brings all algorithms used up to date, and it includes new material on high-performance linear system solving by LU decomposition, and improved data partitioning for sparse matrix computations. The book is accompanied by a software package BSPedupack, freely available online from the author's homepage, which contains all programs of the book and a set of test driver programs. This package written in C can be run using modern BSPlib implementations such as MulticoreBSP for C or BSPonMPI.

Book excerpt: The aim of the book is to provide latest research findings, innovative research results, methods and development techniques from both theoretical and practical perspectives related to the emerging areas of information networking and applications. Networks of today are going through a rapid evolution and there are many emerging areas of information networking and their applications. Heterogeneous networking supported by recent technological advances in low power wireless communications along with silicon integration of various functionalities such as sensing, communications, intelligence and actuations are emerging as a critically important disruptive computer class based on a new platform, networking structure and interface that enable novel, low cost and high volume applications. Several of such applications have been difficult to realize because of many interconnections problems. To fulfill their large range of applications different kinds of networks need to collaborate and wired and next generation wireless systems should be integrated in order to develop high performance computing solutions to problems arising from the complexities of these networks. This book covers the theory, design and applications of computer networks, distributed computing and information systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a multidisciplinary group of scholars from diverse fields including computer science, engineering, archival science, law, business, psychology, economics, medicine and more to discuss the trade-offs between different “layers” in designing the use of blockchain/Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) for social trust, trust in data and records, and trust in systems. Blockchain technology has emerged as a solution to the problem of trust in data and records, as well as trust in social, political and economic institutions, due to its profound potential as a digital trust infrastructure. Blockchain is a DLT in which confirmed and validated sets of transactions are stored in blocks that are chained together to make tampering more difficult and render records immutable. This book is dedicated to exploring and disseminating the latest findings on the relationships between socio-political and economic data, record-keeping, and technical aspects of blockchain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together a series of contributions by leading scholars and practitioners to examine the main features of smart contracts, as well as the response of key stakeholders in technology, business, government and the law. It explores how this new technology interfaces with the goals and content of contract law, introducing and evaluating several mechanisms to improve the 'observability' and reduce the costs of verifying contractual obligations and performance. It also outlines various 'design patterns' that ensure that end users are protected from themselves, prevent cognitive accidents, and translate expectations and values into more user-oriented agreements. Furthermore, the chapters map the new risks associated with smart contracts, particularly for consumers, and consider how they might be alleviated. The book also discusses the challenge of integrating data protection and privacy concerns into the design of these agreements and the broad range of legal knowledge and skills required. The case for using smart contracts goes beyond 'contracts' narrowly defined, and they are increasingly used to disrupt traditional models of business organisation. The book discusses so-called decentralised autonomous organisations and decentralised finance as illustrations of this trend. This book is designed for those interested in looking to deepen their understanding of this game-changing new legal technology.

Book excerpt: Structuring, or, as it is referred to in the title of this book, the art of structuring, is one of the core elements in the discipline of Information Systems. While the world is becoming increasingly complex, and a growing number of disciplines are evolving to help make it a better place, structure is what is needed in order to understand and combine the various perspectives and approaches involved. Structure is the essential component that allows us to bridge the gaps between these different worlds, and offers a medium for communication and exchange. The contributions in this book build these bridges, which are vital in order to communicate between different worlds of thought and methodology – be it between Information Systems (IS) research and practice, or between IS research and other research disciplines. They describe how structuring can be and should be done so as to foster communication and collaboration. The topics covered reflect various layers of structure that can serve as bridges: models, processes, data, organizations, and technologies. In turn, these aspects are complemented by visionary outlooks on how structure influences the field.
