Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of modern Europe isn't simply the story of a bunch of dead white men who ruled most of the world from the dawn of a new age - the Renaissance - that brought light to the Dark Ages through to the chaotic last gasp of communism and the dawn of yet another new age - the European Union. Rather, it's an epic involving the cultural, economic, political, and social developments that played fundamental roles, for better or for worse, in the life we live today. Without an understanding of events and personalities in Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands, Spain, France, Britain, Russia, Poland, and other lands, it's impossible to truly appreciate the development of contemporary institutions, the role of continuity and change in present-day society and politics, and the evolution of current forms of artistic and intellectual expressions.

Book excerpt: * Hemovigilance is a "quality process" which aims to improve quality and increase safety of blood transfusion, by surveying all activities of the blood transfusion chain, from donors to recipients. Hemovigilance programmes have now been in existence for over 15 years, but many countries and centers are still at the development stage. This valuable resource brings together the main elements of such programmes and shows the different types of models available. A general introduction includes Chapters on hemovigilance as a quality tool for transfusion as well as concepts of and models for hemovigilance. The core of the book describes how Hemovigilance systems have been set up and how they work in hospitals, blood establishments, and at a national level. These Chapters are written according to a structured template: products and processes, documentation of jobs, monitoring and assessment, implementation and evaluation of measures for improvement, education and training. Chapters on Hemovigilance at the International level, Achievements and new developments complete the picture. Hemovigilance is above all a practical guide to setting up and improving hemovigilance systems, whilst raising awareness for reporting adverse events and reactions. This is the first international book on hemovigilance, assembling all the vital issues in one definitive reference source - essential reading for all staff involved in the transfusion process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Union is a distinctive creation. There have been several examples of countries that have forged links in ventures of mutual benefit, but in aim, method and achievement this union has gone much further than the others. From the beginning, the EU has always been more than just a customs union. It has aimed for an ever closer union of its peoples and has developed supranational institutions with powers binding upon its members. Since its creation in 1993 it has also grown in size and in the extent of its responsibilities. Integration and intergovernmentalism have been the two forces at work in the evolution of the Community into the Union of 27 members today. In this volume the author sets out to provide an authoritative study of the EU, which clearly explains how it functions and makes it intelligible to a wide readership.

Book excerpt: Terrorism: Documents of International and Local Control is a hardbound series that provides primary-source documents on the worldwide counter-terrorism effort. Chief among the documents collected are transcripts of Congressional testimony, reports by such federal government bodies as the Congressional Research Service and the Government Accountability Office, and case law covering issues related to terrorism. Most volumes carry a single theme, and inside each volume the documents appear within topic-based categories. The series also includes a subject index and other indices that guide the user through this complex area of the law. Europe's Approach to Terrorism introduces Terrorism researchers to the realm of European Union security law. With an ever-expanding immigrant population and a rising Islamic presence within Europe, the EU's quickly developing security law demands the kind of topically organized document collection that Europe's Approach to Terrorism constitutes. A key feature of this volume is the section devoted to case law from the European Court of Justice, which has addressed the delicate legal issue of defining and categorizing philanthropic organizations as terrorist-supporting groups. This volume also features the text of European Parliament measures that regulate the flow of money to terrorist groups. Given the prominence of these questions in non-European countries as well, this volume will serve as a unique research tool for scholars and policymakers around the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Promoting young people's access to social rights as a means for their inclusion and participation in society! In and around many cities, social and economic imbalances have led to the development of disadvantaged neighbourhoods, where diversity is also accompanied by poverty and often marginalisation or exclusion. This is sometimes combined with different forms and levels of de facto social segregation, discrimination and violence. At times of economic and social crisis, feelings of powerlessness and anxiety about the future risk deepening local tensions and underlying conflicts. Young people are often at the centre of these tensions because they are more vulnerable and insecure, and because they are more directly affected by uncertainties regarding the development of their autonomy, as well as participation in society and contribution to its development. The Council of Europe has challenged itself to respond to these situations by adopting recommendations for its member states that encourage and support them in finding adequate policy responses to situations of exclusion, discrimination and violence affecting young people in disadvantaged neighbourhoods. In early 2015, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe adopted a policy recommendation with proposals for policy measures to member states in order to promote access to social rights for young people. Proposals concern: – the provision of accessible, affordable public services; – overcoming segregation; – promoting the participation of young people; – combating discrimination; – recognition of youth work and non-formal education; – promoting gender-sensitive approaches to the elaboration of youth policies. This publication is an accompaniment to this recommendation, and aims to bring its content closer to policy makers, youth work practitioners, youth organisations and youth workers, and provide step-by-step information and guidance on the implementation of the recommendation. The publication also offers advice and examples of actions to take and policies to develop so that the social rights of young people are taken seriously by all the actors concerned by social inclusion and social cohesion.
