I have daydreams and night dreams, some good, some bad, some perplexed, and some crazy. The pain is about deaths of my family, friends, neighbors, and people in the world. I can say that my title is Me* because I feel I'm a very confused and complicated person. (The title and Eugenia's creation's pain*.)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term metafiction invaded the vocabulary of literary criticism around 1970, yet the textual strategies involved in turning fiction back onto itself can be traced through several centuries. In this theoretical/critical study Robert C. Spires examines the nature of metafiction and chronicles its evolution in Spain from the time of Cervantes to the 1970s, when the obsession with novelistic self-commentary culminated in an important literary movement. The critical portions of this study focus primarily on twentieth-century works. Included are analyses of Unamuno's Niebla, Jarnés's Locura y muerte de nadie and La novia del viento, Torrente Ballester's Don Juan, Cunquiero's Un hombre que se parecía a Orestes, and three novels from the "self-referential" movement of the 1970s, Juan Goytisolo's Juan sin Tierra, Luis Goytisolo's La colera de Aquiles, and Martín Gaite's El cuarto de atrás. Seeking a stronger theoretical basis for his critical readings, Spires offers a sharpened definition of the term metafiction. The mode arises, he declares, through an intentional violation of the boundaries that normally separate the worlds of the author, the fiction, and the reader. Building on theoretical foundations laid by Frye, Scholes, Genette, and others, Spires also proposes a literary paradigm that places metafiction in a position intermediate between fiction and literary theory. These theoretical formulations place Spires's book in the forefront of critical thought. At the same time, his full-scale analyses of Spanish metafictional works will be welcomed by Hispanists and other students of world literature.

Book excerpt: They met in the rebellious campus of Columbia University during the 1960s, the days of the Civil Rights, women’s movement and the anti-Vietnam war protests. Jenny was a post-grad aspiring to transform her activism into a journalistic crusade; Siegfried a young and handsome German law student charismatic and unyielding haunted by his family’s past. Random encounters soon turned into sleepless nights; a passionate love story was born! In 1968 Siegfried arrived in Rhodesia (current day Zimbabwe) a break-away British colony in Southern Africa, as a member of a legal U.N. team to investigate human rights violations and a few weeks later Jenny flies there to meet him with her wedding gown in her suitcase. Here in this exotic but racially segregated paradise, the couple witnessed in the impoverished African townships and the countryside, what oblivious white settlers refuse to accept, and what the hardline white regime’s propaganda machine systematically conceals: a fast-approaching African revolution. When Jenny crossed paths with an unconventional and scientific warfare contractor, an immense figure of unparallel political influence, wealth and charms and repressive colonial military background, she will -unintentionally- find herself in the shadowy corridors of Southern Africa’s deep state operating behind the mainstream political smokescreen. She will also discover a dark side she never imagined existed: her own. Placed against a historical backdrop that spans from the hedonistic Cabaret Berlin of 1920s, wartime Germany and Nazi occupied Greece to the 1960s America, and the apartheid era in South Africa; And from Southern Africa’s killing fields to the 108th floor of World Trade Center’s north tower on September 11, 2001, Ms. Y is a cross-genre psychological drama, epic in scope, that deconstructs rather than glorifies power, examines the depths of human controversy, delivers provocative social messages and blends history, mythical allegory and fictional narrative in a fast-pacing plot dominated by three bigger than controversial protagonists tested by love and promiscuity, moral conflicts and momentous circumstances.

Book excerpt: "This scholarly work fundamentally changes the way we think about the monastic church of Vezelay and its sculptures. Kirk Ambrose provides a new account of the celebrated sculptural ensemble at this important French Romanesque monastic church. Whereas scholarly attention in the past has focused almost exclusively on the Pentecostal portal, Ambrose devotes most of his analysis to the nave capitals. He considers how these works intersect with various aspects of monastic culture, from poetry to a sign language used during observed periods of silence. From this study it emerges how many of the sculptures resonated with communal practices and with interpretive modes in use at the site." "Deeming the attempt to uncover an underlying or unifying program to be an anachronistic project, Ambrose explores historically specific ways this ensemble cohered for medieval viewers. Covering a range of themes, including hagiography, ornament, and violence, he develops alternative approaches for the examination of serial imagery. As a result, this book has broad implications for the study of eleventh- and twelfth-century art in the West."--BOOK JACKET.
