(locally exact partial differential equation method). Cette méthode, initialement proposée par C.H.T. Pan, A. Perlman et W. Li de manière heuristique pour la résolution des problèmes issus de la lubrification hydrodynamique, présente un certain nombre de caractères originaux que nous mettons en évidence. Nous montrons en particulier qu'elle donne un schéma numérique exact pour les équations elliptiques sans terme d'ordre 0 en dimension 1. Par ailleurs sa grande stabilité observée numériquement peut s'expliquer en référence à des propriétés liéess à l'homogénéisation. nous donnons ensuite une variante de cette méthode pour la résolution des équations de diffusion convection et plus particulièrement pour les problèmes de perturbations singulières, en dimension 1, pour lesquelles on établit des estrimations d'erreurs uniformes. Comme pour les équations de diffusion pure, on montre que le schéma aux différences, est exact, en dimension 1, pour les équations de diffusion convection sans terme d'ordre 0. La deuxième partie s'intéresse à l'étude mathématique et à l'unicité de la solution approchée d'un problème monodimensionnel de frontière libre intervenant dans l'écoulement d'un fluide peu compressible en présence de cavitation et sous l'hypothèse des films minces, pour des conditions aux limites de Jackobson-Floberg-Adams.

Book excerpt: In this chapter we will present a derivation of a mathematical model describing how cavitation influences the pressure distribution in a thin lubricant film between two moving surfaces. The main idea in the derivation is to first describe the influence of cavitation on the mass flow and thereafter using a conservation law for the mass. This leads to a nonlinear system with two complementary variables: one is the pressure distribution and the other is related to the density, id est a nonlinear complementarity problem (NLCP). The proposed approach is used to derive a mass conserving cavitation model considering that density, viscosity and film thickness of the lubricant depend on the pressure. To demonstrate the applicability and evaluate the proposed model and the suggested numerical implementation, a few model problems are analysed and presented.

The subject has matured into a rigorous discipline, and many university tribology and mechanics courses now routinely contain material on magnetic storage devices. The major growth in the subject has been on the micro- and nanoscale aspects of tribology and mechanics. Today, most large magnetic storage industries use atomic force microscopes to image the magnetic storage components. Many companies use variations of AFMs such as friction force microscopes (FFMs) for frictional studies. These instruments have also been used for studying scratch, wear, and indentation. These studies are valuable in the fundamental understanding of interfacial phenomena. In the second edition, I have added a new chapter, Chapter 11, on micro and nanoscale aspects of tribology and mechanics of magnetic storage compo nents. This chapter presents the state of the art of the micro/nanotribology and micro/nanomechanics of magnetic storage components. In addition, typographical errors in Chapters 1 to 10 and the appendixes have been corrected. These additions update this book and make it more valuable to researchers of the subject. I am grateful to many colleagues and particularly to my students, whose work is reported in Chapter 11. I thank my wife, Sudha, who has been forbearing during the progress of the research reported in this chapter.
