His courtly romances fathered the Arthurian tradition and influenced countless other poets in England as well as on the continent. Yet because of the difficulty of capturing his swift-moving style in translation, English-speaking audiences are largely unfamiliar with the pleasures of reading his poems. Now, for the first time, an experienced translator of medieval verse who is himself a poet provides a translation of Chrétien’s major poem, Yvain, in verse that fully and satisfyingly captures the movement, the sense, and the spirit of the Old French original. Yvain is a courtly romance with a moral tenor; it is ironic and sometimes bawdy; the poetry is crisp and vivid. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis· seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) *at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac· tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 20 (thesis year 1975) a total of 10,374 theses titles from 28 Canadian and 239 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. The organization of Volume 20 is identical to that of past years. It consists of theses titles arranged by discipline and by university within each discipline.

Nearly hundred scientists and engineers from thirteen countries gathered in Warnemiinde to participate in the conference. Rostock Univer sity, the oldest university in Northern Europe founded in 1419, hosted the conference. This workshop followed two earlier workshops held 1997 at the Darmstadt University of Technology and 1998 at Weierstrass Institute for Applied Anal ysis and Stochastics in Berlin under the auspices ofthe German Mathematical Society. These workshops aimed at bringing together two scientific communi ties: applied mathematicians and electrical engineers who do research in the field of scientific computing in electrical engineering. This, of course, is a wide field, which is why it was decided to concentrate on selected major topics. The workshop in Darmstadt, which was organized by Michael Giinther from the Mathematics Department and Ursula van Rienen from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology,brought together more than hundred scientists interested in numerical methods for the simulation of circuits and electromagnetic fields. This was a great success. Voices coming from the participants suggested that it was time to bring these communities together in order to get to know each other, to discuss mutual interests and to start cooperative work. A collection of selected contributions appeared in 'Surveys on Mathematics for Industry', Vol.8, No. 3-4 and Vol.9, No.2, 1999.
