This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of advanced materials with preselected properties is one of the main goals of materials research. Of especial interest are electronics, high-temperature and supemard materials for various applications, as well as alloys with improved wear, corrosion and mechanical resistance properties. The technical challenge connected with the production of these materials is not only associated with the development of new specialised preparation techniques but also with quality control. The energetic charged particle, electron and photon beams offer the possibility of modifying the properties of the near-surface regions of materials without seriously affecting their bulk, and provide unique analytical tools for testing their qUality. This volume includes most of the lectures and contributions delivered at the NATO-funded Advanced Study Institute "Application of Particle and Laser Beams in Materials Technology", which was held in Kallithea, Chalkidiki, in Northern Greece, from the 8th to the 21st of May, 1994 and attended by 73 participants from 21 countries. The aim of this ASI was to provide to the participants an overview of this rapidly expanding field. Fundamental aspects concerning the interactions and collisions on atomic, nuclear and solid state scale were presented in a didactic way, along with the application of a variety of techniques for the solution of problems ranging from the development of electronics materials to corrosion research and from archaeometry to environmental protection.

Book excerpt: LES SPECTROMETRIES D'EMISSION ATOMIQUE ET DE MASSE ELEMENTAIRE UTILISANT UN PLASMA A COUPLAGE INDUCTIF (ICP-AES ET ICP-MS) SONT DESORMAIS DES TECHNIQUES BIEN ETABLIES POUR L'ANALYSE MULTIELEMENTAIRE DE TRACES DANS DIVERSES MATRICES NATURELLES OU SYNTHETIQUES. GENERALEMENT, L'INTRODUCTION DE L'ECHANTILLON DANS LE PLASMA SE FAIT PAR NEBULISATION PNEUMATIQUE D'UNE SOLUTION ISSUE D'UN TRAITEMENT CHIMIQUE (ATTAQUE) D'UNE MATRICE SOLIDE. CETTE ETAPE DE MISE EN SOLUTION PRESENTE DE NOMBREUSES LIMITATIONS ET EST RENDUE DE PLUS EN PLUS DIFFICILE PAR LA SOLUBILITE RESTREINTE ET LA RESISTANCE CHIMIQUE ELEVEE DE CERTAINS POLYMERES. L'ABLATION LASER, TERME QUI DECRIT LA DESTRUCTION PROGRESSIVE ET SUPERFICIELLE D'UNE CIBLE SOLIDE, EST UNE TECHNIQUE D'INTRODUCTION DE L'ECHANTILLON TRES ATTRACTIVE. OUTRE L'ELIMINATION DE TOUTE PREPARATION CHIMIQUE, ET DONC LE GAIN EN TEMPS D'ANALYSE QU'ELLE OFFRE, CETTE METHODE D'ECHANTILLONNAGE DISPOSE D'UNE RESOLUTION SPATIALE DONNANT ACCES A DES INFORMATIONS NOUVELLES QUANT A LA REPARTITION DES ELEMENTS DANS UNE MATRICE. CEPENDANT, LES PARAMETRES REGISSANT L'INTERACTION LASER-MATIERE SONT ENCORE MAL MAITRISES, ET LES ETUDES CONCERNANT L'ANALYSE DES MATIERES PLASTIQUES PAR ABLATION LASER-PLASMA ICP SONT QUASIMENT INEXISTANTES. L'OBJECTIF DE CE TRAVAIL RESIDE DANS LE DEVELOPPEMENT ET L'EVALUATION ANALYTIQUE DE CE COUPLAGE POUR L'ANALYSE ELEMENTAIRE IN SITU DES ADDITIFS DES MATIERES PLASTIQUES. LES PERFORMANCES DE L'ETAPE D'ECHANTILLONNAGE, DONT L'ELEMENT FONDAMENTAL EST LE FAISCEAU LASER ET SES PROPRIETES, ONT ETE ETUDIEES AFIN D'APPROFONDIR NOS CONNAISSANCES DU MECANISME D'INTERACTION LASER-POLYMERE. L'INFLUENCE DE PARAMETRES TELS QUE LA LONGUEUR D'ONDE, L'ENERGIE D'IRRADIATION OU LA FOCALISATION DU FAISCEAU LASER A ETE EVALUEE. LES CONTRIBUTIONS DES EFFETS DE SEUIL D'ABLATION DES POLYMERES ET DES EFFETS D'ECRAN CREES PAR LE MICROPLASMA INDUIT PAR LASER SONT DISCUTEES. L'ETUDE DE L'INFLUENCE DES PROPRIETES DES ECHANTILLONS A REVELE L'IMPORTANCE DE PARAMETRES NOUVEAUX TELS QUE LA STRUCTURE CHIMIQUE DES ADDITIFS DES POLYMERES, OU LES INTERACTIONS ENTRE ADDITIFS ET POLYMERES. L'EVALUATION ANALYTIQUE DU COUPLAGE A MIS EN EXERGUE D'EXCELLENTES PERFORMANCES EN TERMES DE REPRODUCTIBILITE (2-5%), DE LINEARITE DE L'ETALONNAGE, ET DE LIMITES DE DETECTION (INFERIEURES A LA PPB). CES RESULTATS PLACENT CETTE TECHNIQUE A UN RANG DE PERFORMANCE AU MOINS EQUIVALENT A CELUI DE LA FLUORESCENCE X OU DE L'ACTIVATION NEUTRONIQUE POUR L'ANALYSE DES SOLIDES.

Book excerpt: L'ICP EST MAINTENANT ETABLI COMME LA TECHNIQUE ANALYTIQUE DE BASE POUR L'ANALYSE MULTIELEMENTAIRE DES IMPURETES ET DES ELEMENTS TRACES DES ECHANTILLONS LIQUIDES. CEPENDANT LA NEBULISATION DE L'ECHANTILLON A DE NOMBREUSES LIMITATIONS POUR L'ANALYSE DES ALLIAGES METALLIQUES. L'INTRODUCTION DIRECTE DE L'ECHANTILLON SOUS FORME SOLIDE POUR L'ANALYSE PAR ICP SEMBLE UNE METHODE INTERESSANTE CAR ELLE EVITE L'ETAPE DE DISSOLUTION. L'ABLATION LASER SEMBLE OFFRIR, A PRIORI, DE GRANDES POSSIBILITES POUR L'ANALYSE D'ECHANTILLONS SOLIDES QUELLE QUE SOIT LEUR NATURE, CONDUCTEURS OU NON-CONDUCTEURS. L'OBJECTIF DE CE TRAVAIL EST DONC DE DEVELOPPER ET D'EVALUER LE COUPLAGE ABLATION LASER ICP-AES DANS LE DOMAINE DES ALLIAGES METALLIQUES ET PLUS PARTICULIEREMENT SUR LES LAITONS. LES PERFORMANCES DU COUPLAGE ABLATION LASER ICP-AES SONT EVALUEES PAR LE BIAIS DES LIMITES DE DETECTION. LES PERFORMANCES DE L'ABLATION LASER SONT COMPAREES A UNE TECHNIQUE ANALYTIQUE SPECIFIQUE AUX MATERIAUX CONDUCTEURS: L'ABLATION ETINCELLE. LE TYPE D'APPAREILLAGE ET LES CONDITIONS ANALYTIQUES OPTIMALES POUR OBTENIR DES LIMITES DE DETECTION POUVANT CONCURRENCER LE COUPLAGE ABLATION LASER ICP-MS SONT DECRITES. LE COMPORTEMENT DU ZINC ET DU CUIVRE DANS UNE MATRICE DE LAITON EN FONCTION DE LEUR CONCENTRATION EST ETUDIE. UN COMPORTEMENT ANORMAL EST MIS EN EVIDENCE ET L'ORIGINE DE CETTE ANOMALIE EST LOCALISEE. L'INFLUENCE DES PARAMETRES EXPERIMENTAUX EST AUSSI DETERMINEE. ENFIN, UNE ETUDE DE FAISABILITE EST EFFECTUEE DANS UN DES DOMAINES D'APPLICATION SPECIFIQUE A L'ABLATION LASER QUI EST L'ANALYSE DE PROFILS DE CONCENTRATION EN PROFONDEUR PAR L'INTERMEDIAIRE DE DEUX CAS CONCRETS

Samples to be analyzed are usually in the form of solutions and need to be introduced into the plasma by means of a sample introduction system, so as to obtain a mist of very fine droplets. Because the sample introduction system can be a limiting factor in the analytical performance, it is crucial to optimize its design and its use. It is the purpose of this book to provide fundamental knowledge along with practical instructions to obtain the best out of the technique. Book excerpt: Conservation Science is a rather innovative application of instrumental analysis with steadily increasing importance. Although the first attempts for preserving material from the cultural heritage on a scientific basis are found in the 19th century pioneer chemistry years, only the use of sophisticated physicochemical techniques results in effective identification and deterioration studies of monuments and objects, and in reliable intervention procedures. This volume allows to gain solid knowledge and improved skills on the ways separation schemes and diagnostic methodologies are applied in the safeguarding and authentication of tangible works of art; as well as on the modes of implementing novel safeguarding practices built on well-established principles – such as the use of laser in the decontamination of objects. All techniques are covered at a state-of-the-art level; while selected applications permit addressing major groups of materials and artefacts. Conservation Science is nowadays taught at master’s level in all developed countries, and museum laboratories increasingly adopt scientific approaches in their restoration initiatives. The book is intended as a valuable tool for students and professionals active in these frames. In addition, it provides an indispensable manual for participants in the specialized intensive courses, which are systematically offered by the authors under the auspices of the relevant European network.

Book excerpt: This classic monograph on unsteady transonic flow — the flow of air encountered at speeds at or near the speed of sound — is of continuing interest to students and professionals in aerodynamics, fluid dynamics, and other areas of applied mathematics. After a brief Introduction, Swedish physicist Mårten T. Landahl presents a chapter in which the two-dimensional solution is derived, succeeded by a discussion of its relation to the subsonic and supersonic solutions. Three chapters on low aspect ratio configurations follow, covering triangular wings and similar planforms with curved leading edges, rectangular wings, and cropped delta wings, and low aspect ratio wing-body combinations. The treatment concludes with a consideration of the experimental determination of air forces on oscillating wings at transonic speeds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis· seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) *at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac· tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 20 (thesis year 1975) a total of 10,374 theses titles from 28 Canadian and 239 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. The organization of Volume 20 is identical to that of past years. It consists of theses titles arranged by discipline and by university within each discipline.

For convenience, this book is divided into the following five sections: (1) Industrial Applications, (2) Polysaccharides and Lignins, (3) Spider Silks, (4) Protein-Based Systems, and (5) Miscellaneous Biotechnological Polymers. The division is intended for the convenience of the reader and not to depict any basic demarcation in biotechnology, which already spans much of our modern technology and appears poised to embark on a course aimed at extending its boundaries even further. One of the newest trends in science is the mimicking of nature using solutions provided in nature (such as elasticity) to produce materials with distinctive properties. The papers in this book are extensions of presentations given March 15-16, 1994, in San Diego, at the 207th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society during a symposium on "Industrial Biotechnological Polymers." This symposium was sponsored by the Biotechnology Secretariat and cosponsored by the A.C.S. Division of Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering. The editors believe this book will make a lasting contribution to the field of biotechnological polymers.

Book excerpt: The epics of the three Flavian poets--Silius Italicus, Statius, and Valerius Flaccus--have, in recent times, attracted the attention of scholars, who have re-evaluated the particular merits of Flavian poetry as far more than imitation of the traditional norms and patterns. Drawn from sixty years of scholarship, this edited collection is the first volume to collate the most influential modern academic writings on Flavian epic poetry, revised and updated to provide both scholars and students alike with a broad yet comprehensive overview of the field. A wide range of topics receive coverage, and analysis and interpretation of individual poems are integrated throughout. The plurality of the critical voices included in the volume presents a much-needed variety of approaches, which are used to tackle questions of intertextuality, gender, poetics, and the social and political context of the period. In doing so, the volume demonstrates that by engaging in a complex and challenging intertextual dialogue with their literary predecessors, the innovative epics of the Flavian poets respond to contemporary needs, expressing overt praise, or covert anxiety, towards imperial rule and the empire.
