Book excerpt: Il est apparu au cours de ces dernières années que les écoulements instationnaires de fluides intervenaient dans des domaines nombreux et très divers. C'est pourquoi de nombreux chercheurs se sont penchés sur l'étude de tels écoulements. Les écoulements pulsés périodiques ont en particulier retenu l'attention, car ils induisent, dans certains cas, des accroissements non négligeables du transfert thermique moyen, comme cela a été montré au laboratoire. Les résultats obtenus sont intéressants, puisqu'ils concernent en fait le rendement des échangeurs thermiques industriels. Il nous a semblé utile de poursuivre les travaux dans cette voie, et de rechercher quels phénomènes hydrodynamique pouvaient être à l'origine de ces augmentations de transfert. Une méthode électrochimique fondée sur les propriétés diffusionnelles de certains composés chimiques en solution a déjà été utilisée au laboratoire. Elle s'est révélée particulièrement adaptée à l'étude locale et instantannée des gradients pariétaux de vitesse et du transfert pariétal. Nous l'avons employée pour analyser l'effet des pulsations de vitesse sur l'écoulement autour des cylindres, et les modifications de transfert qui en résultent.
