Book excerpt: CETTE THESE EST CONSACREE A L'ETUDE DES REGIMES TRANSITOIRES D'ECOULEMENTS DIPHASIQUES A FAIBLE RAPPORT DE DENSITES, C'EST A DIRE QUAND LA PHASE GAZEUSE, COMPRESSIBLE, EST BEAUCOUP PLUS LEGERE QUE LA PHASE LIQUIDE. TOUT D'ABORD, NOUS PRESENTONS BRIEVEMENT LE CONTEXTE : MODELISATION DIPHASIQUE, NOTION D'HYPERBOLICITE ET METHODE DES VOLUMES FINIS. DANS UNE SECONDE PARTIE NOUS ETUDIONS LA STRUCTURE SPECTRALE DES MATRICES JACOBIENNES DES SYSTEMES BI-FLUIDES. NOUS PROPOSONS D'INTRODUIRE LE RAPPORT DES DENSITES COMME PETIT PARAMETRE PUIS UTILISONS DES METHODES DE PERTURBATION POUR ANALYSER LES ELEMENTS PROPRES DE CES MATRICES. DE CETTE MANIERE, NOUS MONTRONS COMMENT, SELON LES MODELES, CES MATRICES PEUVENT ETRE DIAGONALISABLES A VALEURS PROPRES REELLES, COMPLEXES, OU BIEN JORDANISABLES. LA TROISIEME PARTIE EST CONSACREE A LA PROGRAMMATION DE LA METHODE DES VOLUMES FINIS DANS CE CONTEXTE EN MAILLAGE NON-STRUCTURE MULTIDIMENSIONNEL. LES RESULTATS SONT VALIDES SUR DES CAS TESTS POUR DES ECOULEMENTS EN DESEQUILIBRE PAR COMPARAISON AVEC L'EXPERIENCE MAIS AUSSI SUR DES CAS TESTS ORIGINAUX PAR RAFFINEMENT DE MAILLAGE. DANS UNE DERNIERE PARTIE, NOUS CONSTATONS QUE L'ADIMENSIONNALISATION DES DENSITES MET EN EVIDENCE LA RAIDEUR DE CERTAINS TERMES SOURCES DE RELAXATION. NOUS ETUDIONS LA DYNAMIQUE ASSOCIEE PAR ANALYSE DE STABILITE LINEAIRE ET DEVELOPPEMENT DE CHAPMAN-ENSKOG. BIEN QUE LES JACOBIENNES DU SYSTEME NE SOIENT PLUS DIAGONALISABLES A LA LIMITE NOUS MONTRONS LA STABILITE LINEAIRE FAIBLE DES REGIMES LIMITES ET CONFIRMONS CETTE APPROCHE PAR NOS RESULTATS NUMERIQUES.

Book excerpt: The proceedings of the 9th conference on "Finite Volumes for Complex Applications" (Bergen, June 2020) are structured in two volumes. The first volume collects the focused invited papers, as well as the reviewed contributions from internationally leading researchers in the field of analysis of finite volume and related methods. Topics covered include convergence and stability analysis, as well as investigations of these methods from the point of view of compatibility with physical principles. Altogether, a rather comprehensive overview is given on the state of the art in the field. The properties of the methods considered in the conference give them distinguished advantages for a number of applications. These include fluid dynamics, magnetohydrodynamics, structural analysis, nuclear physics, semiconductor theory, carbon capture utilization and storage, geothermal energy and further topics. The second volume covers reviewed contributions reporting successful applications of finite volume and related methods in these fields. The finite volume method in its various forms is a space discretization technique for partial differential equations based on the fundamental physical principle of conservation. Many finite volume methods preserve further qualitative or asymptotic properties, including maximum principles, dissipativity, monotone decay of free energy, and asymptotic stability, making the finite volume methods compatible discretization methods, which preserve qualitative properties of continuous problems at the discrete level. This structural approach to the discretization of partial differential equations becomes particularly important for multiphysics and multiscale applications. The book is a valuable resource for researchers, PhD and master’s level students in numerical analysis, scientific computing and related fields such as partial differential equations, as well as engineers working in numerical modeling and simulations.

Book excerpt: Since January 1990, when the first edition ofthis first-of-a-kind book appeared, there has been much experimental and theoretical progress in the multi disciplinary subject of tribology and mechanics of magnetic storage devices. The subject has matured into a rigorous discipline, and many university tribology and mechanics courses now routinely contain material on magnetic storage devices. The major growth in the subject has been on the micro- and nanoscale aspects of tribology and mechanics. Today, most large magnetic storage industries use atomic force microscopes to image the magnetic storage components. Many companies use variations of AFMs such as friction force microscopes (FFMs) for frictional studies. These instruments have also been used for studying scratch, wear, and indentation. These studies are valuable in the fundamental understanding of interfacial phenomena. In the second edition, I have added a new chapter, Chapter 11, on micro and nanoscale aspects of tribology and mechanics of magnetic storage compo nents. This chapter presents the state of the art of the micro/nanotribology and micro/nanomechanics of magnetic storage components. In addition, typographical errors in Chapters 1 to 10 and the appendixes have been corrected. These additions update this book and make it more valuable to researchers of the subject. I am grateful to many colleagues and particularly to my students, whose work is reported in Chapter 11. I thank my wife, Sudha, who has been forbearing during the progress of the research reported in this chapter.

Book excerpt: Honoring the contributions of one of the field's leading experts, Lu Ting, this indispensable volume contains important new results at the cutting edge of research. A wide variety of significant new analytical and numerical results in critical areas are presented, including point vortex dynamics, superconductor vortices, cavity flows, vortex breakdown, shock/vortex interaction, wake flows, magneto-hydrodynamics, rotary wake flows, and hypersonic vortex phenomena. The book will be invaluable for those interested in the state of the art of vortex dominated flows, both from a theoretical and applied perspective.Professor Lu Ting and Joe Keller have worked together for over 40 years. In their first joint work entitled ?Periodic vibrations of systems governed by nonlinear partial differential equations?, perturbation analysis and bifurcation theory were used to determine the frequencies and modes of vibration of various physical systems. The novelty was the application to partial differential equations of methods which, previously, had been used almost exclusively on ordinary differential equations. Professsor Lu Ting is an expert in both fluid dynamics and the use of matched asymptotic expansions. His physical insight into fluid flows has led the way to finding the appropriate mathematical simplications used in the solutions to many difficult flow problems.

This book was released on 1996-06-27 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most challenging topics in applied mathematics over the past decades has been the development of the theory of nonlinear partial differential equations. Many of the problems in mechanics, geometry, probability, etc. lead to such equations when formulated in mathematical terms. However despite a long history of contributions, there exists no central core theory, and the most important advances have come from the study of particular equations and classes of equations arising in specific applications. This two volume work forms a unique and rigorous treatise on various mathematical aspects of fluid mechanics models. These models consist of systems of nonlinear partial differential equations like the incompressible and compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The main emphasis in Volume 1 is on the mathematical analysis of incompressible models. After recalling the fundamental description of Newtonian fluids, an original and self-contained study of both the classical Navier-Stokes equations (including the inhomogeneous case) and the Euler equations is given. Known results and many new results about the existence and regularity of solutions are presented with complete proofs. The discussion contains many interesting insights and remarks. The text highlights in particular the use of modern analytical tools and methods and also indicates many open problems. Volume 2 will be devoted to essentially new results for compressible models. Written by one of the world's leading researchers in nonlinear partial differential equations, Mathematical Topics in Fluid Mechanics will be an indispensable reference for every serious researcher in the field. Its topicality and the clear, concise and deep presentation by the author make it an outstanding contribution to the great theoretical problems in science concerning rigorous mathematical modelling of physical phenomena.
