Book excerpt: L'étude est relative à l'oxydation catalytique de l'éthylène dans un réacteur supposé homogène, rempli de particules d'alumine de 3 mm de diamètre moyen, imprégnées de platine (1% en masse). Le réacteur est placé dans un four isotherme ou dans une cavité permettant le chauffage du réacteur par absorption d'un rayonnement microonde. En chauffage microonde, une difficulté essentielle est due à la mesure de la température de la phase réactionnelle solide. Un thermocouple coulissant permet d'approcher cette température ; elle est ensuite estimée avec une bonne précision par l'intermédiaire d'une modélisation du réacteur. Une analyse des résultats expérimentaux permet d'affirmer qu'un même taux de conversion est obtenu en chauffage microonde pour une température inférieure en moyenne de 6 à 8 degrés par rapport a celle du chauffage classique. De plus, en chauffage microonde, la différence de température entre le solide réactionnel et la phase gazeuse externe est comprise entre 73 et 104 c pour l'ensemble des débits étudiés. Aussi, pour un même taux de conversion, la puissance thermique à fournir est plus faible en chauffage microonde qu'en chauffage classique. En définitif, pour la réaction catalytique exothermique étudiée, on obtient un taux de conversion donné avec une puissance énergétique plus faible et la constante de vitesse est accélérée par l'apport d'énergie microonde. C'est là un résultat intéressant conforme à certaines observations antérieures mais qu'il serait bon de justifier encore par une mesure directe de la température du solide réactionnel (par exemple a l'aide d'un radiomètre infrarouge)
