Appeared in the mid 60’s as solid-state alternatives for liquid dye lasers, they recently gained a new dimension after the demonstration of organic semiconductor lasers in the 90's. More recently, new perspectives appeared at the nanoscale, with organic polariton and surface plasmon lasers. After a brief reminder to laser physics, a first chapter exposes what makes organic solid-state organic lasers specific. The laser architectures used in organic lasers are then reviewed, with a state-of-the-art review of the performances of devices with regard to output power, threshold, lifetime, beam quality etc. A survey of the recent trends in the field is given, highlighting the latest developments with a special focus on the challenges remaining for achieving direct electrical pumping of organic semiconductor lasers. A last chapter covers the applications of organic solid-state lasers.

Book excerpt: In combating global warming and other environmental issues over the use of fossil fuels, extensive research has been focusing on developing hydrogen production from biological processes. Biohydrogen is considered a promising future biofuel because of its intrinsic clean and high-energy content properties and the way it is produced. In addition to being produced through environmentally friendly biological means, its conversion to energy yields only pure water, which is an ideal energy carrier in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel combustion. Unlike other well-developed biofuels such as bioethanol and biodiesel, biohydrogen production is still in the early stage of development. A variety of technologies are being developed for biohydrogen production. This chapter presents a review of the state-of-the-art and perspectives of bioprocess design for biohydrogen production research in the context of pathways, microorganisms, metabolic flux analysis, process design, and reactor system. Challenges and prospects of biohydrogen production are also outlined.

Pioneering conceptual artist Vito Acconci began his career as a poet. In the 1960s, before beginning his work in performance and video art, Acconci studied at the Iowa Writers Workshop and published poems in journals and chapbooks. Almost all of this work remains unknown; much of it appeared in the self-produced magazines of the Lower East Side's mimeo revolution, and many other pieces were never published. Language to Cover a Page collects these writings for the first time and not only shows Acconci to be an important experimental writer of the period, but demonstrates the continuity of his early writing with his later work in film, video, and performance. Language to Cover a Page documents a key moment in the unprecedented intersection of artists and poets in the late 1960s -- as seen in the Dwan Gallery's series of "Language" shows (1967-1970) and in Acconci's own journal 0 to 9. Indeed, as Acconci moved from the poetry scene to the art world, his poetry became increasingly performative while his artwork was often structured and motivated by linguistic play. Acconci's early writing recalls the work of Samuel Beckett, the deadpan voice of the nouveau roman, and the jump cuts and fraught permutations of the nouvelle vague. Poems in Language to Cover a Page explore the materiality of language ("language as matter and not ideas," as Robert Smithson put it), the physical space of the page, and the physicality of source texts (phonebooks, thesauruses, dictionaries). Other poems take the space of the page as an analogue to performance space or implicate the poem in a network of activity (as in his "Dial-a-Poem" pieces). Readers will find Acconci's inventive and accomplished poetry as edgy and provocative as anything published today.

This meant an attack on the techniques of realism, and the traditional mission of the museum, both designed shield a small class of objects from the entropic fate awaiting everything else-and the development of an approach that Boris Groys calls "direct realism": an art that would not produce objects, but practices that could enter the flow of time to live and die like the rest of us. But for more than a century now, every advance in this direction has been quickly followed by new means of preserving art's distinction. In this major new work, Groys, one of the world's leading art theorists, charts the paradoxes produced by this tension, which continues to structure the production and reception of new art. The internet, the latest medium through which artists have attempted to disavow this special status, inverts the most notorious consequence of early modernist developments. Le travail a donc dans un premier temps consisté à développer un dispositif expérimental capable de détecter en coïncidence toutes les particules chargées produites lors d’une collision. La mesure de leur vecteur impulsion, qui permet d’accéder à leur énergie cinétique et leur direction d’émission initiale par rapport à celle du faisceau, combine les techniques de temps de vol et de localisation.La corrélation entre les énergies cinétiques des fragments et des électrons produits permet d’une part de déterminer la contribution de chacun des mécanismes d’ionisation dissociative au processus global d’ionisation, et d’autre part de séparer sans ambiguïté les distributions d’énergie cinétique des fragments D+ correspondant à chacun de ces mécanismes. Enfin, l’analyse spatiale des corrélations vectorielles conduit aux distributions angulaires d’émission électronique par rapport à la direction du faisceau, pour une orientation de l’axe de la molécule et une énergie de l’électron données. Les distributions mesurées sont comparées à celles obtenues par le modèle théorique CDW-EIS.
