Dans le domaine sous-alimenté, le frottement n'est pas constant et un certain nombre de cycles est nécessaire avant de parvenir à un fonctionnement stabilisé. Il s'agit du temps nécessaire pour équilibrer les pertes de lubrifiant et la réalimentation autour du contact. Une augmentation de la vitesse ou de la viscosité rend la sous-alimentation plus sévère. Les mesures de coefficient de frottement dans les contacts sous-alimentés sont utilisées afin de déterminer l'épaisseur du film de lubrifiant.
