Book excerpt: L'ozone issu de la pollution est un facteur important de dégradation des colorants acides pour tapis. Le but de ce travail de doctorat est dans un premier temps d'apporter quelques éclaircissements sur ce phénomène et des solutions pour remédier à ce problème. La solidité à l'ozone des colorants acides dépend en premier lieu de leur structure chimique ; notre étude montrera qu'il y a une incompatibilité entre les solidités à la lumière et à l'ozone d'un colorant. On montrera ensuite que les colorants dont la mobilité sur la fibre est limitée, seront plus solides à l'ozone que ceux qui sont très mobiles (étude de colorants de taille croissante, puis de colorants diversement réactifs). La structure de la fibre est un élément qui influence la mobilité du colorant et de l'ozone et donc la solidité à l'ozone : plus on rend la fibre de polyamide ouverte, plus le déplacement du colorant est facilité, et sa dégradation à l'ozone plus aisée. On cherchera quelles seraient les solutions envisageables pour essayer de remédier à ce problème. La première idée sera d'appliquer des molécules suicides que l'ozone attaquera préférentiellement. Par analogie avec des solutions mises en oeuvre dans l'industrie du caoutchouc, on a synthétisé des molécules de la famille des hexahydrotriazines-thiones afin de tester leur potentiel antiozonant. Il se trouve que les résultats sont encourageants, bien que l'application de ces substances entraîne une baisse sensible de la solidité à la lumière. Une autre approche du problème consistera à essayer de fixer le colorant sur la fibre ; en effet, si la solidité à l'ozone d'un colorant dépend pour une grande part de son immobilité, on peut penser qu'un fixateur peut exercer une interaction positive. Les expériences faites prouveront que ce type de solution a le double avantage d'associer une bonne amélioration de la résistance à l'ozone sans entacher la solidité à la lumière, et une grande facilité de mise en oeuvre sur le plan de l'application.

Book excerpt: La dégradation photocatalytique de deux colorants de l'industrie textile de Sahel (Tunisie) a été étudié en milieu aqueux. Notre choix s'est arrêté sur l'Acid Blue 25 colorant anthraquinone, et le Reactive Yellow 23 colorant monoazoïque. Pour l'Acid Blue 25, nous avons étudié dans un premier temps son adsorption sur le TiO2 (Degussa 25) à différentes températures et à différents pH. Dans un deuxième temps la dégradation proprement dite, a été étudiée d'abord sous un aspect cinétique en prenant en compte plusieurs paramères à savoir, l'influence de la masse de photocatalyseur, de la température, du flux de photons, de la concentration molaire initiale en colorant et du pH de la solution. Puis une approche plus analytique nous a permis d'identifier certains produits de dégradation intermédiares (HPLC-MS). Enfin, les produits issus de la minéralisation de l'AB25 (CO2, SO4 2-, NO3-) ont été suivi par analyse du carbone organique total (COT) et de la chromatographie ionique. De même pour le Reactive Yellow 23, nous nous sommes intéressés à identifier les produits intermédiaires de dégradation par HPLC-MS, ainsi que les différents mécanismes de dégradation possibles. Enfin dans la dernière partie de ce travail, nous nous sommes intéressés à l'influence de sels inorganiques sur la dégradation photocatalytique de l'Acid Blue. En effet, lors du traitement des effluents, le colorant n'est jamais tout seul, la plupart d'entre eux contiennent des quantités importantes de sels inorganiques. Il convient donc de voir leur influence sur les cinétiques de dégradation.

Book excerpt: Les acides Orange 52, Violet 7 et Jaune 17 font partie des colorants azoïques les plus utilisés dans les industries textiles. Ces colorants ont pu être dégradés par Pseudomonas putida mt-2. La génotoxicité, évaluée à l’aide de SOS Chromotest, et l’effet pro oxydant augmentent pour des solutions de colorant traitées par la bactérie en conditions statiques alors qu’elle disparaît totalement en conditions agitées. Ce résultat a été relié à l’expression d’une azoréductase cytoplasmique par la bactérie. Les métabolites génotoxiques (amines aromatiques) ont été identifiés. Des mesures d’activité enzymatique ont montré que l’enzyme a plus d’affinité pour l’AO52 que pour les deux autres colorants. Les produits issus de l’azoréduction sont dégradés en présence de O2 par des oxygénases. Il a été constaté que l’action de l’azoréductase et des oxygénases dépendait fortement de la structure chimique de la molécule cible. La mutagénicité des colorants et de leurs métabolites a été vérifiée à l’aide du test d’Ames (avec Salmonella typhimurium TA102 et TA104) et par l’effet direct sur l’ADN plasmidique pKS. Les résultats corroborent (i) ceux du SOS Chromotest, (ii) confirment l’implication des radicaux libres dans le processus de mutagénicité et de génotoxicité et (iii) montrent une corrélation structure chimique - toxicité. P. putida mt-2 est donc capable de dégrader complètement les colorants azoïques en deux étapes (azoréduction suivie d’une métabolisation à oxygène dépendant des intermédiaires formés), ce qui a permis de réaliser une détoxification complète des trois colorants préparés à des concentrations (100 et 200 mg/l) proches de celles généralement trouvées dans les effluents.

Un des problèmes posés est l'élimination des colorants qui persistent dans les eaux de rinçage. La présente étude porte sur la dégradation photocatalytique de trois colorants parmi les plus utilisés dans l'industrie textile vietnamienne: le réactif noir 5, le réactif rouge 4 et le réactif rouge 2. Leur composition et leur structure moléculaire différentes permettent une approche plus fine des mécanismes de dégradation et une explication de la nature des produits de dégradation ultimes. L'oxydation photocatalytique de l'ion ammonium, produit intermédiaire dans la dégradation de certains colorants et par ailleurs polluant très présent dans les eaux agricoles, fait l'objet d'un chapitre particulier. Les trois colorants étudiés sont dégradés et minéralisés totalement par photocatalyse en utilisant TiO2 en suspension. L'influence du nombre d'atomes de carbone et du squelette moléculaire sur la vitesse de dégradation de ces colorants a été mise en évidence. Les hétéroatomes S et N sont totalement minéralisés : le soufre contenu dans les groupes sulfonate est transformé en ions sulfate. L'azote des groupes amino est converti en ions ammonium et nitrate. L'azote contenu dans les groupes azoïque est transformé en diazote gazeux N2, ce qui représente un cas idéal pour l'environnement. La dégradation du cycle triazinique résiste à l'oxydation photocatalytique comme il résiste à tout autre procédé physico-chimique. Néanmoins, tous les trois substituants sur les trois atomes de carbone du cycle triazinique sont totalement dégradés par photocatalyse et remplacés par trois groupes OH donnant l'acide cyanurique C3H3N3O3 comme produit organique ultime, heureusement totalement inoffensif pour l'environnement. Le schéma de la dégradation photocatalytique a pu être proposé grâce à l'identification (et à la quantification d'entre eux) de certains de très nombreux intermédiaires de réaction. Pour éviter une filtration finale fastidieuse et rédhibitoire du point de vue du génie chimique, des échantillons de TiO2 ont été déposés sur différents supports photo-inertes et testés avec succès lors de la dégradation du réactif noir 5. De plus, la dégradation de ce colorant a été testée par photocatalyse solaire à la Plateforme Solaire d'Almeria en Espagne dans deux photoréacteurs pilotes solaires

Of course, a whole book series of several volumes would be necessary to cover this topic completely. However, there is undoubtedly a need for a more condensed presentation which does not go into experimental details, but is limited to the basic principles of the analytical methods and illustrates their applica tions. The emphasis is on more advanced and potential methods, and partic ularly on those based on different types of spectroscopy and chromatography.

Since that date, many things have changed in the world. Hence the name given to the first IFTEC meeting held at the Hague (NL), November 15-18, 1992 Food Technology for a Changing World. Is the world changing for better or worse and what can food technology improve? The keynote lecture of the IFTEC meeting dealt with hunger and the challenge it represents to food science and technology. In the preface to the 1986 book it was suggested that food packaging could solve some of the problems of crop preservation in countries where starvation is prevalent. However, such thoughts did not solve any problems. The famine is still spreading in Africa. The unbalanced north-south situation evoked in the 1986 preface has not improved. The international market of foods and agricultural products is constantly changing and food packaging scientists can only explore new ways to help cope with this. Some of these ideas are approached in this book, particularly in chapters 9, 10 and 12.
