Book excerpt: This book brings the history of Latin American philosophy to an English-speaking audience through the prominent voices of Mauricio Beuchot, Horacio Cerutti-Guldberg, María Luisa Femenías, Jorge J. E. Gracia, Oscar R. Martí, León Olivé, Carlos Pereda, and Eduardo Rabossi. They argue that Spanish is not a philosophically irrelevant language and that there are original positions to be found in the work of Latin American philosophers. Part I of the book looks at why the history of philosophy has not developed in Latin America. A range of theoretical issues are explored, each focusing on specific problems that have hindered the development of a solid history. Part II details the complex task of writing a history of philosophy for a region still haunted by the specter of colonialism.

Book excerpt: Multicultural counselors often face a moral dilemma: should they follow the ethical guidelines of their professional counseling organization at the expense of a client or take the appropriate action while bending official standards? Ethics in a Multicultural Context provides strategies for critical decision making in multicultural settings. Utilizing extensive case studies, authors Sherlon P. Pack-Brown and Carmen Braun Williams present a comprehensive exploration of counseling ethics in a cultural context. Examining the implications and consequences of competent multicultural counseling, they present ethical dilemmas arising in face-to-face counseling interactions, supervisory relationships, and educational situations. By placing ethical issues in a cultural context, this inclusive volume provides readers with the practical tools to address complex questions such as Are dual relationships ethical? How do you handle unintentional cultural bias? Can you barter for counseling services? How do you manage a client′s welfare? Does counseling foster dependence? What are the boundaries of competence? Ethics in a Multicultural Context encourages critical thinking rather than passive acceptance. The authors identify culturally troublesome issues, encourage culturally appropriate interpretations of existing ethical guidelines, and promote ethical behavior in multicultural contexts. encourages critical thinking rather than passive acceptance. The authors identify culturally troublesome issues, encourage culturally appropriate interpretations of existing ethical guidelines, and promote ethical behavior in multicultural contexts. Designed for students and educators in counselor education and counseling psychology programs, this book is also an essential guide for social workers, psychologists, and health professionals who work in multicultural environments.

Book excerpt: In this edifying volume Sarah Corona and Claudia Zapata extrapolate the causes for the divisions between groups in Latin American society, bringing their years of experience investigating the conditions and consequences of heterogeneity in the region. First, Corona approaches the problem of difference and heterogeneity epistemologically, asking about the possible benefits of horizontal modes of knowledge production between academics and the "social other." She demands reification for those without access to institutions who experience social ills and theorizes a trans-disciplinary dialogue to discover a horizontal construction of knowledge. Zapata evaluates and questions whether indigenous people throughout the continent have had their quality of life improved by the recognition of their collective rights as peoples. These two works provide overviews of a Latin American multiculturalism that connects to parallel movements in North America and Europe. Combined they offer a guide that could be vital to future activism and social work whether in the classroom or on the streets. Critical Interculturality and Horizontal Methodology in Latin America will appeal to scholars and students who are in need of new ways to comprehend the current strain of multiculturalism and plurality. It offers reflections on how social research can be not only sensitive to the epistemologies and interests of the "cultural other," but approach parity and horizontality in dialogue.

Book excerpt: In this volume, leading communication scholars integrate cutting-edge research with real-world dilemmas as they address ethical problems associated with technological and cultural changes and demographic shifts. In eleven chapters, the fourteen contributors to Communication Ethics in an Age of Diversity consider the implications of these changes to communication contexts ranging from personal friendships to communication over the internet and from classroom dialogues to mass-mediated communication to community building in an age of diversity. They address specific issues associated with race, gender, ethnicity, and affectional orientation, offering specific proposals for change. Although the primary audience is scholars and teachers in communication programs, the book will be of particular interest to readers in various disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, especially individuals in centers and departments of ethnic studies, women's studies, and African American studies.
