Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to Fox Ethnology The information contained in the Indian text of this paper was obtained by Harry Lincoln from a reliable informant whose name is withheld, as it would diminish his social prestige owing to the very conservative character of the Fox Indians. Harry Lincoln was obliged to write out the information from memory only; and he subsequently dictated the text written in the current syllabary. The Indian text accordingly is restored by me according to his phonetics. It is proper to note that one or two sentences have been slightly modified by me to agree with what I conceive Fox grammar to be. The English translation is based on a paraphrase written out by George Young Bear, corrected and supplemented by a grammatical analysis of the Indian text by myself. A full list of all verbal stems is not given as I have previously (Fortieth Ann. Kept. Bur. Amer. Ethn., p. 616) published a list of Fox stems which contains nearly all those in the Indian text of the present paper. So I give only those which are not in the former list. For a similar reason only a few grammatical notes are given. But as the English translation is as close to the Indian original as is consistent with English idiomatic usage, with these helps the serious student will have little difficulty in working out the Indian text. I do not pretend that the information given in this volume on the "ceremonial runners" (or "ceremonial messengers") of the Fox Indians is as full as desirable in all particulars. At the same time it is much more than was previously known. The only reference of any importance on the ceremonial runners of the Fox Indians (Meskwakis) is the half page (61) by M. A. Owen, Folk-Lore of the Musquakie Indians. It is not clear whether Catlins remarks on the slave dance (North Amer. Indians, ed. 1913, vol. ii, pp. 241-242, and the accompanying plate) refer to the Sauk or the Fox Indians. It is highly probable that those of Galland on the ceremonial runners (Indian Tribes of the West, in Annals of Iowa, 1869, p. 350 et seq.) refer to the Sauk and not the Fox. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sac and Fox Indians in Kansas; Mokohoko's Stubbornness: Some History of the Band of Indians Who Staid Behind Their Tribe 16 Yrs; As Given by Pioneers The old Sauk warrior Black Hawk could not stay out, with 20 of his warriors amidst 2000 or more Indians and 250 British soldiers they thought to overpower Gen. Wayne on the Maumee Aug. 20 1794. Gen. Wayne with 900 troops, obtained such a complete vic tory over the forces opposing him, that the Indians decided after wards that it was folly to listen to the British, and war against such a veteran as Gen. Wayne. This battle which resulted later inthe Greenville Treaty, was called the battle of Fallen Timbers. It is said in history that the Sauks could not stand up to the fire arms in the battle, but after seeing how it was going against their indian allies they pulled out and went home. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations on the Thunder Dance of the Bear Gens, of the Fox Indians The two accounts of the Thunder dance of the Bear gens of the Fox Indians which I now present were written by two native informants in the current syllabary and were subsequently restored according to the phonetics of Harry Lincoln in the main, though a few pages of the second account were restored according to those of Thomas Scott. The songs, however, are given in the Fox syllabic style, using roman type for the script. The English translation of the first account is based upon an English paraphrase by Horace Poweshiek, corrected and supplemented by a grammatical analysis of the Indian text by myself. This last task was materially lightened by the intelligent help given by Harry Lincoln when answering linguistic queries based on the text. The English translation of the second account is almost entirely by myself, though I had the benefit of a paraphrase dictated by Harry Lincoln; and I was further assisted by the grammatical notes (based on the text) which I obtained from him. The first account is by Jim Peters, who died in 1917. The reason for the delay in its appearance is twofold - first, his request that this be deferred until after his death so that he might not suffer socially or politically, as he assuredly would have had it been disclosed during his lifetime that he had imparted the information; secondly, it was clear that additional data were needed. The second account in a measure covers the second desideratum. Hence both accounts are now published, even if the total information in certain respects is not as complete as desirable. The literary style of the account by Jim Peters is slightly inferior to some other writings by him on ceremonial and religious subjects (as yet unpublished), and decidedly unequal to the excellency attained by him in writing ordinary myths and tales. First we have a brief ritualistic origin myth; then a description of a specific ceremony follows; then follow some songs used any time the Thunder dance of the Bear gens is held; information on this dance follows, and indirect discourse should be noted; then a speech such as occurs in the ceremony comes; then follow some general comments and moralizing, such as occur elsewhere in gens festivals. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fox Miscellany The English translation of The Wolf Gens etc., p. 18 et seq., is essentially that written by Tom Brown, a Sauk of Oklahoma, many years ago. A comparison with the Fox syllabic text shows that the translation is close to the Indian original; consequently very few changes have been made. A single informant wrote out the syllabic Indian text of Notes as well as an English paraphrase thereof. The English paraphrase is presented with some corrections in English grammar, and in a number of places it has been made to agree closer with the Indian text. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indian Tribes of North America From the date of its first appearance in 1891 the Powell map of Linguistic Families of American Indians North of Mexico has proved of the widest utility. It has been reissued several times and copied into numerous publications. There has, however, been almost equal need of a map giving the location of the tribes under the several families. To one familiar from his readings in early American history with the names and locations of our prominent eastern tribes, such as the Delaware, Iroquois, Cherokee, and Choctaw, the preparation of a tribal map would seem to be simple, and it would indeed be so if all Indians had been grouped into bodies as clearly marked as those mentioned. But even in the eastern United States the term tribe is quickly found to have no uniform application. The Creeks were a confederation of a few dominant tribes and a number of subordinate bodies, each formerly independent. The name Delaware is com mouly said to have covered three tribes or subtribes, but while two of these seem never to have been independent of each other, the third, the Munsee, is often treated as if it were entirely separate. The name Powhatan was applied to about 30 tribes or subtribes which had been brought together by conquest only a few years before Virginia was settled, and the term Chippewa, or Ojibwa, is used for a multitude of small bands with little claim to any sort of governmental unity. In the case of the Iroquois, on the other hand, the tribe was only a part of the governmental unit, the Iroquois Confederation, or Longhouse. The northern Plains tribes present a certain coherence but farther south and west our difficulties multiply. An early explorer in Texas states that in that region, by nation was to be understood only a single town or perhaps a few neighboring villages, and in fact the number of tribal names reported from this section seems almost endless. In the governmental sense, each Pueblo community was a tribe, and if we were to attempt a complete list we should have in the first place a large number of existing, or at least recently existing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Face of the Fox, an anthropological and sociological study of the Fox American Indians (the Mesquakie, their actual tribal name) who live just outside Tama, Iowa, Frederick Gearing puts a face on the peoples of this tribe. In doing so, Gearing particularly deals with the estrangement of the Fox Indians and the Westerners surrounding them. He defines the concept of estrangement as including feelings of contempt, indifference, and pity often leading to misplaced hurt and hate on both sides. Specifically, he states that when one is estranged, he is unable to relate because he cannot see enough to relate to, which is a type of social disconnect. Estrangement shackles both parties, leaving them unable to connect with one another.Finding this is more of a cognitive mental processing problem, Gearing proposes gaining control of the mind, believing the opposite of being estranged is to find a people believable and real. The way to do this is to educate each estranged group about the other and put a face on each group. Educating Westerners about the Fox people they live next to, Gearing describes their community, their social structure, their culture, their language and some of its many meanings, and their view of themselves and how they view their future.Attempting to end estrangement and engender endearment and understanding, The Face of the Fox will be of interest to anthropologists and sociologists focusing on the American Indian.
