Book excerpt: Although there have been many studies focusing on Asian Americans' ethnic identity and the stereotypes associated with them, little is known about how Asian Americans negotiate their multiple layers of ethnic identity and respond to the stereotypes imposed on them. The main goals of the current study were to examine American-Raised Chinese' (i.e., Chinese who were born and/or raised in America) multiple layers of ethnic identity and their negotiation process of these multiple layers of ethnic identity, the relationship between their ethnic identity and stereotypes, and the creative ways American-Raised Chinese interpreted and responded to stereotypes. Another goal of this study was to examine the role of an ethnic student organization on campus and American-Raised Chinese's participation in the organization. Through Chinese Cultural Association, I interviewed eighteen informants and observed their daily practices in public and private settings. The findings indicated that American-Raised Chinese undergraduates choosing to participate in an ethnic student organization over other organizations reflected their active negotiation of the multilayered ethnic identity. In addition, by meeting Chinese of different nationalities on campus and abroad, these undergraduates came to realize the diverse background of Chinese individuals, leading them to reexamine and reconstruct their ethnic identity. In particular, these undergraduates developed diasporic Chinese identity that not only acknowledged the diversity of Chinese community in America in terms of nationality, but also transformed their American identity into "ethnic" identity among Chinese of different nationalities. The findings also showed that American-Raised Chinese' negotiation of their ethnic identity was closely related to their perception of the stereotypes. The informants came to recognize the changing nature of stereotypes and this realization led them to reconstrue their understanding of ethnic identity. Furthermore, using anecdotes of American-Raised Chinese undergraduates' self impersonation, I argued that these undergraduates proactively responded to the stereotypes by making parody about themselves. Through self impersonation, these undergraduates achieved the double intents of performing themselves as Asian American and simultaneously challenged what the dominant American society expected them to be.

Book excerpt: Since the end of the Civil Rights era, a new paradigm has emerged for understanding race and racism in American society. This neoliberal hegemonic discourse argues that systemic racism ended with the abolishment of formal, juridical racism and that any continued investment in race is both unnecessary and deeply problematic. Critical race theorists have named this framework color- blind racism. In recent years, color-blind racist discourse has been repackaged under a "post-race" label and the election of America's first non-White president has only served to bolster notions that America might have somehow transcended race. For college students, the undergraduate years are often a time of great intellectual, emotional, and spiritual upheaval and this instability makes college a prime site for examining individuals' meaning-making and identity formation processes. Students of color are no exception to this overall phenomenon and the literature on racial identity development speaks to the dramatic changes in self-concept that individuals of color often experience while attending college. One group of students of color, Asian American college students, are deeply under-studied and there is little scholarly writing on Asian American college students' racial identity development process. This dissertation is a qualitative study of the effects of color-blind racism on the racial identity meaning-making of Asian American college freshmen. Using a narrative inquiry methodology, the author conducted lengthy in-person interviews with nine participants. The emergent themes from the study indicate that the participants' racial meaning-making process was heavily laden with elements of the ethnicity paradigm of race, color-blind racist tropes, and Asian American racial tropes. The study results suggest that these participants' hold little in the way of racial identity consciousness, as Asian Americans, and that their heavy investment in ethnic identity works to support a color-blind racial frame. Furthermore, elements of color-blind racism and Asian American racial formation appear to interlock in unique ways to produce complicity with the logic of color-blind racism and support for key elements of White racial hegemony. Further research is needed on the effects of color-blind racism on the identity development of college students broadly, and on Asian American students specifically.

Book excerpt: This study investigated Chinese Americans' perceptions and behaviors related to their race, ethnicity, overall quality of life, racism-related stress, and coping strategies. There were 4 main purposes: to determine (a) what extent ethnic identity and racial identity shared a relationship with level of distress experienced in response to racism, (b) whether there was a relationship between racial identity status and coping strategy used in response to a racist encounter, (c) whether there was a relationship between type of coping strategy utilized and racism-related stress, and (d) whether there was a relationship between racial identity and quality of life in terms of satisfaction with physical health, psychological well-being, and social relationships. Through the use of an Internet-based data collection modality, a total of 99 Chinese American adults participated in this study. They were recruited via psychology-related listservs, Chinese churches, universities, not-for-profit Asian American organizations, Internet advertising, and the snowball sampling method. Respondents were diverse in terms of age, level of educational attainment, occupation, and socioeconomic status. A series of standard multiple regression analyses were used to test study hypotheses. Results indicated that individuals higher in Conformity attitudes reported lower levels of racism-related stress and individuals higher in Immersion-Emersion attitudes tended to report higher racism-related stress. Results also indicated that individuals higher in Conformity attitudes tended to use Avoidance strategies to cope with racism and individuals higher in Immersion-Emersion attitudes tended to engage in Problem-Solving strategies. Interestingly, the use of Problem-Solving was associated with an increase in racism-related stress, regardless of respondents' racial identity status. Finally, this study found that individuals with higher Dissonance attitudes tended to report lower levels of satisfaction with their physical health, psychological health, and social relationships, and individuals with higher Internalization attitudes reported higher levels of satisfaction with their psychological health. Implications of the findings of the study with regard to service delivery to Asian American clients are discussed.

It has been well-documented that members of the Asian American community have differing opinions on the policy (e.g., Poon et al., 2019; Takagi, 1992). Given these differing opinions, the purpose of this study was to understand the connections between identity and racial ideology and their impact on an individual's opinion regarding race-conscious admissions. To explore the relationship between identity, ideology, and opinion, I investigated the four components of racial consciousness defined by Sellers et al.'s (1998) multidimensional model of racial identity. Findings indicated three forms of racial consciousness: race-avoidant, within-group, and collective liberation. Each form of consciousness is informed by different areas of literature, including literature on discrimination, racial identity, racial ideology, and attitudes regarding one's racial group. Characteristics of race-avoidant consciousness include a sense of inferiority to white norms, a cultural connection to racial identity, color-evasive ideologies to address racial inequities, and alignment with whiteness. Key characteristics of within-group consciousness include a sense of inferiority to white norms, a cultural connection to racial identity, and a focus on Asian American-specific issues, such as data disaggregation and socioeconomic stratification. Collective liberation consciousness is defined by a political connection to racial identity, a belief that race is entwined with all other identities and ideologies, and a sense of solidarity with other communities of color. The three forms of racial consciousness highlight the various ways Asian American college students make connections between their experiences with race and their opinion on race-conscious admissions. Without building critical racial consciousness, differing opinions within the Asian American community can unintentionally detract from important policies and have long-lasting and dangerous implications for racial justice.

There is wide variation, but on average older Whites are healthier than older Blacks and tend to outlive them. But Whites tend to be in poorer health than Hispanics and Asian Americans. This volume documents the differentials and considers possible explanations. Selection processes play a role: selective migration, for instance, or selective survival to advanced ages. Health differentials originate early in life, possibly even before birth, and are affected by events and experiences throughout the life course. Differences in socioeconomic status, risk behavior, social relations, and health care all play a role. Separate chapters consider the contribution of such factors and the biopsychosocial mechanisms that link them to health. This volume provides the empirical evidence for the research agenda provided in the separate report of the Panel on Race, Ethnicity, and Health in Later Life.
