Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Concepts of Ethics The ethical theorist tries to understand the concepts we use in our everyday ethical decisions and judgments. Some of these concepts are perfectly fundamental: such are value, obligation and responsibility. It is the explicit or implicit presence of one of these concepts in a judgment which enables us to identify the judgment as ethical. These concepts involve others. In understanding value we are driven to determine its relations to desire and to pleasure; and in understanding responsibility we must analyze will, choice and intention. I propose, then, to investigate these concepts and their interrelations. In my View ethics concerns events or objects which can be known. But the problem of knowing these things is not, like the problem of knowing other events and objects of an empirical science such as chemistry or zoology, one of obtaining experience of new phenomena. We are well acquainted with the phenomena; the problem is to under stand their relations. Whether this understanding involves new observations it is not now necessary to decide. What is involved is, at any rate, very different from what we usually think of as 'observation'. It is like what is done by the theoretical rather than the experimental physicist. The method is not to gather anything new but to re-exami'ne what we have. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Science of Ethics The title of this book is intended to be fairly descriptive of it. It treats of ethics as a science, which if not wholly independent of metaphysical considerations - and of no science can that be said - is sufficiently independent to permit of separate positive treatment. And under the broad license of an 'introduction' it presents not only an outline of the science as we find it to-day, but some account of the past which has made it what it is. Part I contains brief chapters upon the scope and methods of the science and upon one metaphysical topic (the freedom of the will) which cannot well be passed over in silence. But it is mainly given up to a discussion of the subjects of moral judgments and a survey of the various kinds of standards according to which, under the conditions of savage or of civilized life, moral judgments are made. It is thus intended to present a broad background of facts against which the explanatory theories, old and new, may be the better appreciated. Part II is a review of the principal Greek and English ethical theories. In an introductory note I have given my reasons for including this review. It does not purport to be a history of ethics, even for the periods which it covers. By neglecting much that is important to the historian, I have gained space for a fuller and, I trust, more interesting and instructive treatment of the men and movements that are included. In connection with Part II a selection from the ethical classics should certainly be read; and this, however meager, should not fail to comprise Books I, II, and X of the Nicomachean Ethics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Historical Introduction to Ethics The present work, which is now laid before the public, was commenced as a series of lectures to the Newman Club at the University of California. These were delivered during the fall and winter of 1908. They were afterwards considerably modified, and constituted a part of the course in the Introduction to Philosophy given by the author at the Catholic University of America. The material has again been worked over and developed into an independent work, which the author hopes will be of service as an introduction to the study of ethics. The nature of the work is indicated by the title. It is "A Historical Introduction to Ethics" It is, therefore, neither a History of Ethics nor a Textbook of Ethics. Were it a history of ethics it would have been necessary to consider many philosophers who are not even mentioned. An arrangement of systems in historical order would have been chosen, and the logical classification of ethical theories which has here been adopted would necessarily have been abandoned. Were it a textbook of ethics a number of special problems, which it has not considered, would have been worked up into a general outline covering the entire field of ethical speculation. What, it may be asked, is the special value of a historical introduction to ethics? It is the author's opinion that the true approach to an understanding of the science of ethics is first to be sought in the history of the theories of morals. While this is true of ethics, it is not true of the sciences in general. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ethics, General and Special A word about the importance of our subject. This work is intended to throw some additional light on the topic of morality. For Ethics is our theme, and Ethics is the science of morality. And if any detail of thought has a vital bear ing on man's destiny, if any branch of study helps shape his life, that detail of thought is suggested by Ethics, morality is that study. Ethics is the science of putting order in man's free acts; and, when you reflect that all sin, and much trouble, and hell itself are only varying phases of disorder, it must be evident that this science, theoretically mastered and sys tematically reduced to practice, could effect a revolution in the world. And the revolutionists would be hailed as the Emancipators Of mankind. They would go down in history, and they do go down in history as the supremest benefactors of our race. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Inductions of Ethics, And, the Ethics of Individual Life: Being Parts II and III of the Principles of Ethics As explained in the original preface fixed to Part I, that part was written, and issued by itself in 1879, under the im pression that ill-health might wholly prevent me from treat ing the subject of Ethics, if I waited till it was reached in the prescribed course of my work. More than ten years followed, partly occupied in further elaboration of T ice Principles of Sociology, and partly passed in a state of prostration which prevented all serious work. Along with partial recovery there came the decision to write at once the most important of the further divisions of The Prin ciples of Ethics - Part IV: Justice. This was issued sepa rately in June, 1891. As stated in the preface to it, I pro posed thereafter to write, if possible, Parts II and III, completing the first volume. This purpose has fortunately now been compassed; and Parts II and III are herewith issued, as proposed in the original programme. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ethics and Moral Science Undoubtedly, if ethical facts are considered from the outside, objectively, and in their relation to other social facts, they seem to belong to the same category, and consequently to be objects of science as they are. But so long as they are manifested subjectively in consciousness under the form of duties, remorse, feelings of blame, praise, etc., they possess an entirely different character. They seem to relate exclusively to action, and to depend solely on principles of practice. Oi the two conceptions the first is unusual, the second universally received. It is not less familiar to philosophy than to common sense, and has never shocked any one. The other is proper to scientific sociology which puts forth as a principle that ethical facts are social facts, and which concludes that the same method applies to one as to the other. It nearly always awakes a feeling of instinctive distrust in those who are not accus tomed_to look at things in that manner.
