During your clerkship, you will provide valuable assistance as your judge resolves disputes that are of great importance to the parties, and often to the public. The parties and the public accept judges' rulings because they trust the system to be fair and impartial. Maintaining this trust is crucial to the continued success of our courts. That's why, although you have many responsibilities that demand your attention, you must never lose sight of your ethical obligations. You need to become familiar with the Code of Conduct for Judicial Employees, which has five canons. In brief, the canons provide that you should - uphold the independence and integrity of the judiciary and of your office - avoid impropriety and the appearance of impropriety in all activities - adhere to appropriate standards in performing your duties; - avoid conflict with official duties and the appearance of impropriety in all outside activities - refrain from inappropriate political activities Scrupulously follow these canons and the other rules that govern your conduct. Do not assume that good intentions are enough. It is not enough to simply learn and follow the Code of Conduct and other related ethics rules, however. You also need to familiarize yourself with and follow your judge's ethical guidelines. These guidelines may differ from chambers to chambers. Your judge may impose restrictions that go beyond the Code. Although many of your obligations are the same as those of other federal judicial employees, certain restrictions are more stringent because of your special position in relation to the judge.

The belief in reincarnation and life after death raises a tantalising question: Can the living communicate with the dead? The belief in the immortal soul is a dogma of Christianity (resurrection), Hinduism (reincarnation or samsara), Islam (Day of Judgement), Judaism (sheol), and the Shona (NyikaDzimu). Moreover, man has been familiar with the concept of life after death since time immemorial. Immortality has been rejected by those who feel its only basis is wishful thinking that when the body dies, the personality dies with it because it is part of the physical body. Believers can cite the resurrection of Jesus, and maintain that since life on earth is not completely fulfilled an afterlife is necessary for completion. Another argument in favour of an afterlife is that since matter and energy may be transformed but not destroyed, neither can personality, which exists just as do the elements in nature, be destroyed. In many of the ancient societies, including Egypt and Greece, dreaming was considered a supernatural communication or a means of divine intervention, whose message could be unravelled by those with certain powers. In modern times, various schools of psychology have offered theories about the meaning of dreams. In Communication with the Deceased is meant to serve only as a basis for reflection in order for the reader to examine all the clues and then derive further meaning from specific circumstances of his/her own dreams. To be able to interpret a dream, one does not need to have an academic degree in psychology. What is important is to use one's instinct and common sense. Try to develop your own personal insights into what the common symbols in your dreams mean. When it comes to dream symbols, there are no equivocally universal rules or meanings. Book excerpt: Traditional separation of powers theories assumed that governmental despotism will be prevented by dividing the branches of government which will check one another. Modern governments function with unexpected complicity among these branches. Sometimes one of the branches becomes overwhelming. Other governmental structures, however, tend to mitigate these tendencies to domination. Among other structures courts have achieved considerable autonomy vis-à-vis the traditional political branches of power. They tend to maintain considerable distance from political parties in the name of professionalism and expertise. The conditions and criteria of independence are not clear, and even less clear are the conditions of institutional integrity. Independence (including depolitization) of public institutions is of particular practical relevance in the post-Communist countries where political partisanship penetrated institutions under the single party system. Institutional integrity, particularly in the context of administration of justice, became a precondition for accession to the European Union. Given this practical challenge the present volume is centered around three key areas of institutional integrity, primarily within the administration of justice: First, in a broader theoretical-interdisciplinary context the criteria of institutional independence are discussed. The second major issue is the relation of neutralized institutions to branches of government with reference to accountability. Thirdly, comparative experience regarding judicial independence is discussed to determine techniques to enhance integrity.

Lawyers advance bad ends and deceive, business managers exploit and despoil, public officials enforce unjust laws, and doctors keep confidences that, if disclosed, would prevent harm. Ethics for Adversaries is a philosophical inquiry into arguments that are offered to defend seemingly wrongful actions performed by those who occupy what Montaigne called "necessary offices." Applbaum begins by examining the career of Charles-Henri Sanson, who is appointed executioner of Paris by Louis XVI and serves the punitive needs of the ancien régime for decades. Come the French Revolution, the King's Executioner becomes the king's executioner, and he ministers with professional detachment to each defeated political faction throughout the Terror and its aftermath. By exploring one extraordinary role and the arguments that can be offered in its defense, Applbaum raises unsettling doubts about arguments in defense of less sanguinary professions and their practices. To justify harmful acts, adversaries appeal to arguments about the rules of the game, fair play, consent, the social construction of actions and actors, good outcomes in equilibrium, and the legitimate authority of institutions. Applbaum concludes that these arguments are weaker than supposed and do not morally justify much of the violation that professionals and public officials inflict. Institutions and the roles they create ordinarily cannot mint moral permissions to do what otherwise would be morally prohibited.
