Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a relationship structure available to everyone in America today called, "Eternity Commitment". The EC is all about love and sharing your lives together. The relationship structure is in every way like getting married; however no marriage license is required. In addition, you may have your lifelong commitment blessed in a faith-based ceremony, and you may celebrate your lifelong commitment with a reception following your ceremony. There is an Eternity Ring you may wear to express your bond and commitment. And yes, you have your honeymoon. Normally we don't think of marriage as a financial business partnership, however we should. When you cut through the myriad of legalese and the way in which the different states define marriage, it all comes down to one thing -- marriage is a partnership of money, possessions and joint liability. This is not what our religious forefathers intended. State lawmakers have hijacked marriage from its faith-based origins and desecrated it. (The book explains how) Marriage today is an immoral institution promoting self-serving, aberrant behavior and greed. When the love is gone, all that remains in a marriage are the monies and possessions. The divorce business is a multi-billion dollar industry for attorneys. State marriage laws do not enforce the primary commitment of marriage, "until death do us part". If one person desires a divorce, the courts will grant it. In many cases, the person breaking the commitment of marriage will profit financially. Thus, state lawmakers have created immoral incentives for divorce. People marry for money, stay married for money, manipulate their spouse over money, and divorce for money. Where is the love? Where is the commitment?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do young people between the ages of 13 and 24 put life together? What do they value in life? What parts does religion and spirituality play? Based on interviews and surveys over four years, this book provides a detailed and well-founded picture of Australian young people. The book examines the influences of families, schools and churches on the lives of young people and describes how they can best help young people to enjoy positive and responsible relationships with themselves, close others, the wider society, the natural environment and with God. It suggests ways of pointing young people to the spiritual dimension of life, respecting their frameworks for seeing the world, but also doing justice to the counter-cultural nature of the Christian faith.

Book excerpt: Winner of the René Wellek Prize Named a Best Book of the Year by The Guardian, The Millions, and The Sydney Morning Herald This Life offers a profoundly inspiring basis for transforming our lives, demonstrating that our commitment to freedom and democracy should lead us beyond both religion and capitalism. Philosopher Martin Hägglund argues that we need to cultivate not a religious faith in eternity but a secular faith devoted to our finite life together. He shows that all spiritual questions of freedom are inseparable from economic and material conditions: what matters is how we treat one another in this life and what we do with our time. Engaging with great philosophers from Aristotle to Hegel and Marx, literary writers from Dante to Proust and Knausgaard, political economists from Mill to Keynes and Hayek, and religious thinkers from Augustine to Kierkegaard and Martin Luther King, Jr., Hägglund points the way to an emancipated life.

Book excerpt: Harness the power of an integrative approach to couples counseling! Why do marriages fail? The behaviorist or cognitive therapist explains that unhappy couples have self-defeating ways of thinking about their spouses and themselves. The sociologically oriented counselor points to the impact of social trends and dramatic changes in child-rearing and social expectations. A therapist oriented toward psychodynamics or systems theory sees the destructive patterns of childhood replayed in the marriage, with spouses taking on rigid roles. The pastoral or humanist counselor believes that partners who cannot experience self-fulfillment through commitment and trust will feel less love and grow more and more disconnected. Couples Therapy, Second Edition, brings together all these points of view to make a unified whole. This integrative approach proposes a new model of successful marriage based on four cornerstones: resiliency, social support, adaptability, and self-fulfillment. Weaving together theory and research, Couples Therapy, Second Edition, explores how common issues can lead to trouble in relationships. It suggests specific interventions so therapists can teach clients to deal with such problem areas as anger management, domestic violence, depression, anxiety, parenting conflicts, in-laws, work pressures, and sexual dissatisfaction. Couples Therapy, Second Edition, offers a sound theoretical framework as well as practical ideas. Through clinical vignettes and up-to-date research, it makes the common conflicts and developmental stages of marriage so understandable that it can be profitably read by clients as well as counselors. Its invaluable resources for the couples therapist include: end-of-chapter professional development questions therapeutic exercises answers to frequently asked professional and ethical questions intervention suggestions for the therapist self-assessment questionnaires book and video recommendations on each chapter topic Written in clear, readable prose, Couples Therapy, Second Edition, offers practical help for the experienced clinician as well as theoretical overviews for the counselor in training.

Book excerpt: This volume presents a selection of Hubert Dreyfus's pioneering work in bringing phenomenology and existentialism to bear on the philosophical and scientific study of the mind. Each of the thirteen essays interprets, develops, and extends the insights of his predecessors working in the European philosophical tradition. One of Dreyfus' central contributions to reading the historical canon of philosophy comes from his recognition that great philosophers help us to understand the "background practices" of a culture - the practices that shape and embody our most basic understanding of ourselves and the things and situations we encounter in our world. Background practices are all too often overlooked completely, or else their importance is misunderstood. Each chapter in this volume shows in one way or another how a broad range of philosophical topics can only be properly understood when we recognize how they are grounded in the background practices that shape our lives and give meaning to our activities, our tasks, our normative commitments, our aims and our goals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever heard anyone ask, "Does God really mean what He says"? That sounds like a silly question, doesn't it, especially if you claim to be a Christian? But even as a Christian, have you ever thought, "Well, I know this is what God said I'm supposed to do, but it doesn't seem that He would mind if I did it my way"? If so, did you realize you may be putting your own will above God's will, that you could be defying and disobeying God's direct commands? The ultimate question is, Are you expressing obedience to God and His desires through your words, actions, and thoughts? Do His commands guide your life, causing you to flee from sinful activities and live in purity and holiness? The objective of this book and the impact it should have on each of our lives can be simply stated in the question: "Does God really mean what He says?" From the Christian perspective, we would quickly say that we do believe God means what He says. But again, does our life reflect that profession? You see, how we live our lives is an undeniable demonstration of whether or not we believe that God means what He says. Have you truly died to sin, which is an expectation God has for His followers? If not, can you truly say that you believe God means what He says? Does your life reflect a purity and holiness that is consistent with the pattern found in God's word? If not, can you truly say that you believe God means what He says? These and other related issues which are vital to all of us will be explored in this book. Most importantly, throughout the course of our study together, we will rely upon the only source of divine authority for our answers: the word of God. Once we have completed this journey, my fervent prayer is that each of us will not hesitate even one moment to answer the question, "Does God really mean what He says?" with a resounding yes! This is critical because, as we shall see, God does mean what He says.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you're like most people you have questions about God that are difficult to find answers for. But, there are answers to some of these and other intriguing, and sometimes troubling, questions about life inside this book in easy-to-understand language. This book is designed to lessen some of the mystery of God. God wants us to know more about Him and His plans for us. God wants us to know about His Son, Christ Jesus, and exactly what He did for us then and what He does for us now. God wants us to know about His power, the Holy Spirit, and what He does. God wants us to understand how we are viewed by Him and how we fit into His overall plans. He wants us to see ourselves, the condition that we have, and the position that we are in. God wants us to understand that there must be a faithful and productive relationship between Him and us if we are to please Him. And we must have a solid understanding of how that relationship itself works. It is extremely important that we know what sin is and how it affects our relationship with Him. He wants and expects us to know all these things. God has never wanted to remain a total mystery to us because we cannot serve Him if He is a total mystery. Therefore, this book explains to the undecided, enlightens the newly converted, and reinforces for those already "born again" the necessity of understanding the relationship between God and themselves. Also, you will come to know that there are choices that must be made that only you can make. But they will not be as difficult to make once you have a better understanding of the relationship between God and man.

Book excerpt: Greatly respected church strategist Ken Hemphill believes the only process that will radically transform the mission and structure of today’s community of believers is the Word of God applied by the Holy Spirit. Toward that goal, Eternal Impact presents to readers a biblical study of the New Testament Church, focusing on the founding principles of the church in Matthew 16 and the birth of the church in Acts 2. Also included are chapters on the eight key characteristics of kingdom-centered churches and discussions on leadership and giftedness among church members.
