Book excerpt: An entire generation of young Christians—along with millions of older believers—is confused about what they believe, why they believe it, and how it’s relevant. The Unshakable Truth Journey® Growth Guides are a series of 12 courses designed especially for churches, church classes, and small groups. They get to the heart of what being a true follower of Christ means and what knowing Christ is all about. Each five-session guide is based on one of 12 core truths of the Christian faith presented in Josh and Sean McDowell’s book The Unshakable Truth®. Orthodox, hard-hitting, and relevant, these guides are uniquely positioned for today’s culture because they highlight how Christianity’s beliefs affect relationships; promote a relational, group context in which Christians can experience the teaching in depth; and show believers how they can live out Christianity’s central truths before their community and world. More than just a program, The Unshakable Truth Journey® Growth Guides are a tool for long-term change and transformation! Restored—Experience the Joy of Your Eternal Destiny explores the truth about the return of Christ. As a guide for this exploration Warner boldly uses the prayers said by the celebrant of the Eucharist while putting on the priestly vestments. These prayers focus attention on aspects of life that are common to us all: hands, mind, fashion, commitment and celebration. What we discover here is an extended mediation on faith in Jesus Christ. It is an account that directs our attention unflinchingly to the reality of life without losing sight of heaven as our destiny.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a unique style that is both sensory and utopian, Yayoi Kusama’s work possesses a highly personal character, yet one that has connected profoundly with large audiences around the globe. Throughout her career she has been able to break down traditional barriers between work, artist, and spectator. Kusama’s work—which spans paintings, performances, room-size presentations, sculptural installations, literary works, films, fashion, design, and interventions within existing architectural structures—has transcended some of the most important art movements of the second half of the twentieth century, including pop art and minimalism. Conveying extraordinary vitality and passion, her work seems to encompass an autobiographic, even confessional dimension. As stated by Roberta Smith in The New York Times, “These paintings form a great big infinity room of their own, but one in which each part is also an autonomous work of art, its own piece of wobbly, handwrought infinity. You may not want to know these paintings Ms. Kusama has made, but in the moment their vitality is infectious. It is the vitality of an artist who lives to work, whose work keeps her alive.” Yayoi Kusama: Festival of Life documents the artist’s exhibition at David Zwirner’s Chelsea location in New York in late 2017, featuring a selection of paintings from her iconic My Eternal Soul series, new large-scale flower sculptures, a polka-dotted environment, and two Infinity Mirror Rooms. The monograph includes new scholarship on the artist by Jenni Sorkin, as well as a special foldout poster.

Another of the writers of this book explains seeing a miracle when a young man walked unharmed out of what should have been electrically charged swimming pool waters. And the third scribe tells for the first time a previously untold secret of why his army platoon buddies were fatally ambushed and why he wasn't with them. All this and lots more awaits the reader in ‘Here for a Reason.’

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Cort explores the narratives by which the Jains have explained the presence of icons of Jinas (their enlightened and liberated teachers) that are worshiped and venerated in the hundreds of thousands of Jain temples throughout India. Most of these narratives portray icons favorably, and so justify their existence; but there are also narratives originating among iconoclastic Jain communities that see the existence of temple icons as a sign of decay and corruption. The veneration of Jina icons is one of the most widespread of all Jain ritual practices. Nearly every Jain community in India has one or more elaborate temples, and as the Jains become a global community there are now dozens of temples in North America, Europe, Africa, and East Asia. The cult of temples and icons goes back at least two thousand years, and indeed the largest of the four main subdivisions of the Jains are called Murtipujakas, or "Icon Worshipers." A careful reading of narratives ranging over the past 15 centuries, says Cort, reveals a level of anxiety and defensiveness concerning icons, although overt criticism of the icons only became explicit in the last 500 years. He provides detailed studies of the most important pro- and anti-icon narratives. Some are in the form of histories of the origins and spread of icons. Others take the form of cosmological descriptions, depicting a vast universe filled with eternal Jain icons. Finally, Cort looks at more psychological explanations of the presence of icons, in which icons are defended as necessary spiritual corollaries to the very fact of human embodiedness.

Book excerpt: Issues of homosexuality are the subject of public and political controversy in many African societies today. Frequently, these controversies receive widespread attention both locally and globally, such as with the Anti-Homosexuality Bill in Uganda. In the international media, these cases tend to be presented as revealing a deeply-rooted homophobia in Africa fuelled by religious and cultural traditions. But so far little energy is expended in understanding these controversies in all their complexity and the critical role religion plays in them. Complementing the companion volume, Public Religion and the Politics of Homosexuality in Africa, this book investigates Christian politics and discourses on homosexuality in sub-Saharan Africa. The contributors present case studies from various African countries, from Nigeria to South Africa and from Cameroon to Uganda, focusing on Pentecostal, Catholic and mainline Protestant churches. They critically examine popular Christian theologies that perpetuate homophobia and discrimination, but they also discuss contestations of such discourses and emerging alternative Christian perspectives that contribute to the recognition of sexual diversity, social justice and human rights in contemporary Africa.
