Tais características podem ajudar ou atrapalhar um estudante, dependendo de como se aproximam ou se distanciam das características da língua nativa de cada um. No caso do latim, as muitíssimas semelhanças com o português podem ajudar - afinal, o português se originou do latim, sendo mesmo possível dizer, sob um certo ponto-de-vista, que o português nada mais é que uma forma moderna de latim. Por outro lado, certas semelhanças podem acabar atrapalhando, quando se encontram em palavras que não têm nenhuma relação entre si, ou em casos nos quais o português divergiu muito do latim. Assim, um falante de português não vai ter problema nenhum em aprender a palavra latina campus como equivalente do nosso campo , ou aqua significando água &c.; mas uma palavra como malum levar o aluno a pensar apenas em mal , esquecendo ou ignorando seu outro significado, maçã . O que dificulta mais a situação do estudante iniciante é que o latim é o que se costuma chamar de língua morta , ou seja, uma língua que está parada no tempo, que se cristalizou em um momento no passado e vem sendo mantida intacta ao longo dos séculos (na verdade, já lá se vão bem dois milênios). Quando aprendemos uma língua moderna, o que interessa é basicamente adquirir vocabulário e ser capaz de se comunicar de maneira viva, tratando de assuntos comuns da vida moderna. Com o latim, tudo é diferente: não temos com quem conversar, temos poucos materiais multimídia e o foco do estudo é totalmente diferente. Geralmente o latim é incluído nas faculdades e universidades com foco em um ou mais dos pontos a seguir: • leitura de obras antigas, seja da literatura romana clássica, seja da literatura medieval, seja de textos religiosos • linguística histórica, estudando a evolução do português e das outras línguas descendentes do latim (espanhol, francês, italiano, romeno &c.) Ou seja, ainda que o latim seja usado hoje, tal uso é restrito a poucos fãs da língua, e o estudo acadêmico é sempre focado no passado, geralmente ignorando por completo o uso moderno da língua latina. Ainda relacionado ao foco na leitura e tradução de textos, e mais ainda ao estudo da evolução das línguas que descendem do latim, está o grande peso que se dá ao estudo da gramática formal, ou seja, o estudo teórico de áreas como morfologia, análise sintática &c., incluindo toda a nomenclatura relacionada a essa área. Ou seja, no estudo acadêmico do latim, não basta aprender vocabulário e ser capaz de traduzir ou formar uma frase: é necessário saber fazer a autópsia de tal frase, ou mudando de analogia, é necessário mostrar e analisar toda o projeto daquela frase, explicando detalhadamente sua estrutura. Por isso, mais do que qualquer outra língua, o estudo do latim exige que você esteja em dia com o conhecimento teórico do português. (Ou, em alguns casos, pode-se dizer que é o contrário: você está estudando latim para aprofundar seu conhecimento teórico do português.) É importante salientar que esta obra não é um curso de latim. Ou seja, você não vai encontrar aqui explicações completas, vocabulário didaticamente escolhido, exercícios, textos para traduzir &c. Nossa proposta aqui é ajudar o estudante a sanar as dúvidas que certamente vão surgir no início dos estudos de língua latina. Para isso, abordamos conceitos gramaticais tanto específicos do latim, quanto pertinentes também à língua portuguesa. A primeira parte traz um apanhado geral dos conceitos gramaticais e linguísticos cujo conhecimento é imprescindível no estudo da língua latina, organizados de maneira estrutural. A segunda parte traz algumas das dúvidas com as quais os estudantes iniciantes se deparam com maior frequência, e que não se limitam a simples conceitos gramaticais. A terceira parte traz um glossário, com definições sucintas para os conceitos abordados nas duas partes anteriores, em ordem alfabética para facilitar a consulta.

By the plan of redemption, however, a way has been opened whereby the inhabitants of the earth may still have connection with heaven. God has communicated with men by His Spirit, and divine light has been imparted to the world by revelations to His chosen servants. “Holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” 2 Peter 1:21. During the first twenty-five hundred years of human history, there was no written revelation. Those who had been taught of God, communicated their knowledge to others, and it was handed down from father to son, through successive generations. The preparation of the written word began in the time of Moses. Inspired revelations were then embodied in an inspired book. This work continued during the long period of sixteen hundred years,—from Moses, the historian of creation and the law, to John, the recorder of the most sublime truths of the gospel. The Bible points to God as its author; yet it was written by human hands; and in the varied style of its different books it presents the characteristics of the several writers. The truths revealed are all “given by inspiration of God” (2 Tim. 3:16); yet they are expressed in the words of men. The Infinite One by His Holy Spirit has shed light into the minds and hearts of His servants. He has given dreams and visions, symbols and figures; and those to whom the truth was thus revealed, have themselves embodied the thought in human language. The ten commandments were spoken by God Himself, and were written by His own hand. They are of divine, and not of human composition. But the Bible, with its God-given truths expressed in the language of men, presents a union of the divine and the human. Such a union existed in the nature of Christ, who was the Son of God and the Son of man. Thus it is true of the Bible, as it was of Christ, that “the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.” John 1:14. Written in different ages, by men who differed widely in rank and occupation, and in mental and spiritual endowments, the books of the Bible present a wide contrast in style, as well as a diversity in the nature of the subjects unfolded. Different forms of expression are employed by different writers; often the same truth is more strikingly presented by one than by another. And as several writers present a subject under varied aspects and relations, there may appear, to the superficial, careless, or prejudiced reader, to be discrepancy or contradiction, where the thoughtful, reverent student, with clearer insight, discerns the underlying harmony. As presented through different individuals, the truth is brought out in its varied aspects. One writer is more strongly impressed with one phase of the subject; he grasps those points that harmonize with his experience or with his power of perception and appreciation; another seizes upon a different phase; and each, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, presents what is most forcibly impressed upon his own mind—a different aspect of the truth in each, but a perfect harmony through all. And the truths thus revealed unite to form a perfect whole, adapted to meet the wants of men in all the circumstances and experiences of life. God has been pleased to communicate His truth to the world by human agencies, and He Himself, by His Holy Spirit, qualified men and enabled them to do this work. He guided the mind in the selection of what to speak and what to write. The treasure was intrusted to earthen vessels, yet it is, none the less, from Heaven. The testimony is conveyed through the imperfect expression of human language, yet it is the testimony of God; and the obedient, believing child of God beholds in it the glory of a divine power, full of grace and truth.

Book excerpt: The view that language is in some way 'arbitrary', that there is no formal relationship between a linguistic message and the thought it is meant to convey, is long established and pervasive. The goal of John Haiman's study is to challenge the monopoly of arbitrariness, which he believes has affected in significant ways many models of linguistic description and analysis, notably those proposed by Saussure and more recently by Chomsky and his associates. Linguistic structures, Dr Hainian claims, may be compared to (non-linguistic) diagrams of our thoughts, and deviate from iconicity in many of the same ways and for much the same reasons as do diagrams in general. Arbitrariness develops as a result of the relatively familiar principles of economy, generalization and association. In relation to this thesis, Dr Haiman considers a wide variety of constructions, including conditionals and interrogatives, gapping, causative structures, auxiliaries and reflexives, and provides a wealth of exemplification from different languages that also points to typological differences in respect of iconicity.
